  Les Cartes Heuristiques : personnelles ou pas ?

  Lors de la semaine Carto Cube , j'ai souvent entendu la sempiternelle phrase "les cartes heuristiques de toute façon c'est personnel et ça ne peut pas se partager". Cette sentence est séduisante pour le néophyte mais elle est fausse. Cette formule définitive est principalement utilisée par ceux qui connaissent ces cartes mais n'en produisent pas eux-mêmes.

  Cependant j'ai appris à aimer cette phrase car elle me rajeunie. En effet je l'entends depuis que je fais ce type de carte. Elle m'a longtemps fait bondir mais comme je suis d'un naturel (très) optimiste j'ai fini par me dire que les évidences finiraient par triompher.

  Petite démonstration en m'appuyant sur ce qui est en train de se passer sur le web où de plus en plus de cartes heuristiques circulent.

  Voici une présentation rapide de Twitter (1) qui à mon humble avis offre, bien mieux qu'un article, un tour d'horizon clair sur ce qu'il faut savoir sur cet outil :

  

  Dommage que la réalisation ait été un peu rapide et que tous les liens ne soient pas clickable.

  L'ami et bloggeur Philippe Boukobza vient de mettre en ligne sur Heuristiquement le résumé d'un article publié par El  Pais sur Face Book et ses dangers

  

  J'aime beaucoup la présence de la légende en bas à gauche. J'aime moins les liens entre sous branches : elles rompent la carte et entrave le regard.  Mais peut être qu'en ces temps où l'attention est la nouvelle ressource rare tout est permis pour suspendre.

  Par conte la tentative d'  Andrew Wilcox d'organiser le débat "Analysing the Strengths and Weaknesses of Mind Mapping Software Applications" est tout sauf convaincante.

  Faute d'appareillage de la carte il est difficile de s'y retrouver. Plutot que faire une seule carte il aurait fallu faire une carte par outils (ou par famille d'outils) et faire un espace débat dans chacune de ces nouvelles cartes.

  Dans un deuxième temps il aurait été possible de produire une carte synthétique reprenant les principales conclusions et  donnant la possibilité de cliquer dans les cartes outils pour ceux qui voudraient aller plus loin.

  

   

  Même si il restent encore du savoir faire à acquérir on voit bien que les cartes heuristiques ne servent pas uniquement à entretenir un dialogue avec soi-même

  Pour terminer sur une note d'humour il faudrait éviter que le mind mapping ne se trouve dans la situation ridicule de Marina Foîs, qui dans les Robins des Bois, n'arrêtait pas de dire "arrêtez de regarder mes fesses, c'est personnel les fesses"

  Yesterday's blog post about Wikipedia losing volunteers and what that possibly might mean for Open Street Map triggered a wave of reaction (a backlash, rather) on this blog, on Paul Ramsey's blog, and on Twitter. Most of it came from OSM advocates who perceived my post as a knock on Open Street Map.
  
  I am not knocking Open Street Map. I wrote: "Collaborative mapping certainly has its place in the GIS ecosystem, but it is often misunderstood, and on occasion misrepresented." The misrepresentation is what I have a problem with.
  
  A crucial issue with all volunteer-based systems is what motivates people to volunteer their efforts (HT Kirk Kuykendall), and also what unmotivates them – i.e., what motivates people to cease to volunteer their efforts. Without a fundamental understanding of these forces, it would be naïve to view such systems as anything more than exotic flowers that inspire, but may not be there tomorrow.

  FME Freemium Edition - To Free or Not to Free?It's All About Data

  One of the ideas that we have been throwing around at Safe these days is the concept of releasing a “free” version of FME. As you can imagine this idea creates a very passionate discussion from both those for and those against such a product offering and I invite you to take part in this discussion by posting your comments below.

  What got us talking about this concept at Safe is the book called “Free: The Future of a Radical Price” by Chris Anderson. This book is an interesting and thought provoking read and I highly recommend it. What is also brilliant about this book is that Anderson illustrates the very point that he made in the book by allowing people to read it online for a period of time (the MP3 version is still available for free from Wired.com). If you had wanted the “value added” ability to download it or to have your own copy of the book (physical or for the Kindle) you must pay for it. Ingenious!
  
  

  Throughout his book, Anderson talks about the freemium model which is attributed to venture capitalist Fred Wilson with the name “freemium” being coined by Jarid Lukin. Looking around the landscape we see examples of freemium all around us. Many of the most popular sites and tools that people use everyday are based on the freemium model. Examples include Gmail, AVG, Hotmail, flickr, Skype, and one of my recent favorites Dropbox.

  Available products using the freemium model are also more and more common. QuickTime is one that immediately comes to mind for me as you can upgrade from QuickTime Player to QuickTime Pro. In the GIS space the most recognizable would be Google Earth. One look at AppStores for the iPhone/iPod and other devices and you will see that there are literally thousands of examples of the freemium business model in action.

  Another interesting thing about the freemium model is that it cuts across both open source and traditional software business models. The idea with freemium is that you are giving something away in order to sell value added services or enhanced products or services. If you just build things and give them away with no goal of selling future services or products then that is not the freemium model, that is just giving stuff away for free.

  Freemium is largely a digital phenomenon as the unit cost of software and services is very close to zero making it possible to give stuff away in the hopes of getting revenue from users wanting more (check out the Economics of Abundance video on the freemium blog for a good explanation).

  As we explore the possibility of an FME Freemium Edition we of course need to be careful. How much do we give away? If too much is given away, then users will not see the value of enhanced versions and we hurt our ability to fund further product development. If too little is given away, then there is no value in the freemium model since few people will use it. Hitting it just right means your product usage spreads quickly and the number of users “upgrading” to the purchased version outnumbers those that no longer need to buy the existing versions.

  I think Lakhvir who is our Director of Marketing said it best when she said “This is interesting but we better make sure we do our homework and get our ducks in a row if we do this!”

  My question for you is, should we or should we not have an FME Freemium Edition? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  ArcGIS Online Moving to Google Maps/Bing Tiling SchemeGeoChalkboard

  Late last week ESRI announced that its ArcGIS Online services will be migrating to the Mercator-based tiling scheme used by Google Maps and Bing Maps by the end of the year.  Previously these services have used the WGS 1984 geographic coordinate system with a 512 x 512 pixel size.  Google Maps and Bing use a modified Mercator projection with a 256 x 256 tiles size. The differences between ArcGIS Online and the popular Google Maps and Bing tiling schemes caused problems for many organizations.  According to ESRI,

  Some organizations struggle with choosing either the ArcGIS Online tiling scheme to match their ESRI software stack, or the Google / Bing tiling scheme to match a better-known standard. With a unified tiling scheme for the three services, the decision gets a lot easier.

  The post goes on to discuss the advantages and challenges of switching to the new tiling scheme and also discusses a workflow for caching your maps in the new scheme.

  Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and for many it is also a time for giving. I thought I would show how GeoCommons can be used to promote giving back this holiday. One way many individuals and families give during Thanksgiving is by donating to or volunteering at a local food bank’s Thanksgiving feast. This year, these feasts are particularly important with so many suffering from the economic crisis.

  Feeding America is a network of individuals, local food banks, national offices, and corporate and government partners who work together to try to solve America’s hunger crisis. With 205 food banks across the country, they were a good resource to put together a quick dataset and map. Below is a map showing all of the Feeding America food banks by the number of pounds of food distributed annually. The map can be used to find a food bank near you. Click on the map to see the interactive version in Maker! By clicking on the icon, you access all of the information on that food bank including the services it offers and its website. You can find out detailes on how to help for thanksgiving by calling or on the food bank’s website. Their website also has a neat map of their own which provides hunger and poverty statistics for each state.

  This year I'm actually hoping to get some skiing in. Whilst researching for a resort I started thinking that it would be a really good idea if ski resorts used Twitter to provide snow updates. Guess what, lot's of them do!
  
  So far I've compiled a list of around 50. Of course it wasn't long before I started thinking these Twitter accounts need to be mapped. What I want to do is to click on a resort on a Google Map and have the Twitter feed load automatically. Hence the Tweeting Ski Resorts map.
  
  Over the next couple of days I'm going to track down more Tweeting ski resorts. I'll be adding them to the map as I find them.

  1. The USGS NGP has just released an updated version of their Base LiDAR Specification.
  2. The intent is to insure that the data being collected is suitable for inclusion in the National Elevation Dataset and CLICK.
  3. This document is an important reference for all aerial LiDAR projects.

  The U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program (NGP) has recently released an updated version of their Base LiDAR Specification. Labeled as Version 12 this document is being offered as a minimum set of requirements. With the increase in stimulus funding  it is even more important that there be a minimum set of requirements that the projects adhere to in order to insure that the resulting DEMs be suitable for use as part of the National Elevation Dataset (NED) and in CLICK.

  Perhaps more importantly from a scientific point of view the spec also addresses protection of the source point cloud data integrity. All too often the source data is lost in the processing of the DEMs. This will insure its use in non-DEM science and mapping applications. The hope is that this document will be adopted by the USGS and other federal agencies, but I believe this document will serve as an important reference for all LiDAR data collection projects worldwide.

  Kudos to those involved and for the straightforward and compact presentation.

  The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) has announced the hiring of its first-ever full time executive director. Sheila Wilson (GISP) will take-on that role starting December 1.
  
  
  
  According to GISCI board president (and NSGIC's own) Ed Arabas, the time is right for this step forward:
  
  

  “Our organization is now at a critical juncture regarding future direction, and having an Executive Director that will dedicate her full-time energy to the issues surrounding the certification of GIS professionals will support the growth and maturity of members of the GIS industry.”

  Sheila Wilson has a PhD in Geology from the University of Tulsa, where she is also an an adjunct professor. She has worked as a GIS analyst in the petroleum industry and, most recently, was Executive Director for the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) Association.

  StreetView Trikes in South Africa: With the World Cup coming to South Africa in 2010, Google has been working hard to cover the country with StreetView imagery. Not only are they using cars, but they'll be using the cool "StreetView Trike" as well.

  As with other countries, they're asking you to vote for where the trikes should go. World Cup stadiums? Museums? Vote and let them know what you think.

  10,000 Museums in a Network Link: The folks at Muselius have put together a powerful little network link. Using their database of over 10,000 museums, they've created a KML that showcases all of them. You can get the KML file here.

  10 things Americans should know about the world: Educational Tours has put together a neat piece that highlights "10 things Americans should know about the world". They cover things such as where the largest producers of petroleum, our biggest supplier of bananas, etc. For each answer they provide a KML that flies you to that country.

  While I'd like to have seen a bit more detail in the KMLs, or even an embedded plug-in that does it all in one shot, it's a neat way to highlight items in an article like this.

  GotReception? uses Google Maps to show cellular phone coverage in the United States. Using the map anyone can search a location to see which carrier has the best ratings in the area. People can also share their experiences with others by posting their own rating for their carrier.
  
  The site uses a heat map to show mobile phone coverage and allows the user to view the coverage of the major mobile phone providers. It is possible to search the map by location, link to any map view and embed a map in your own website or blog.
  
  Orange UK Coverage
  
  In the UK mobile hone company Orange have produced a Google Map to show where users can get a good reception. The site uses a heat map to show the quality of coverage in different locations.

  Quasiment tous les outils Autodesk sont disponibles en version monoposte ou en version réseau. J’ai est déjà parlé sur ce blog.

  Dans le cas d’une installation réseau, il est possible depuis le poste client d’emprunter un jeton réseau, par exemple pour utiliser AutoCAD Map 3D en mode déconnecté.

  Pour autoriser l’emprunt de licence, je vous recommande la lecture du fichier d’aide adsk_nlg.chm – disponible aussi en pdf (voir la section “Configuration de l’emprunt de licences”.

  Quant à la manière de réaliser l’emprunt du côté logiciel client, le plus simple est de reprendre l’aide en ligne :

  The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monument of Scotland are busy mapping declassified military aerial photographs on Google Maps.
  
  The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives have millions of military reconnaissance images of locations throughout the world declassified by the UK Ministry of Defence. The archives range from Second World War Allied and German Luftwaffe reconnaissance photographs to Cold War imagery.
  
  To date RCAHMS have mapped reconnaissance photographs in Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. Using Google Maps to display the photographs means that users can compare the present day satellite view of locations with reconnaissance images from the past (mostly from World War II).

  Amazing film footage of San Francisco in 1905VerySpatial

  When the main focus of your work is historical landscapes, like mine is, your biggest obstacles is finding good data about what that landscape looked like. I know I would do almost anything to find a source for my project like this amazing film footage of Market Street in San Francisco in 1905, before the huge 1906 earthquake. The footage was taken from a camera in the front of a streetcar moving down Market Street toward what looks to be the Embarqadero. Besides providing a great look at a typical day in a bustling city, you can see all kinds of cool things, including how nonchalant everyone is about the streetcars, horse-drawn carriages and wagons, and even automobiles coming at them from every direction.

  Google Maps Navigation for Android 1.6

  Google announced today that Google Maps Navigation (Beta) is now available on devices running Android 1.6 (Donut) and higher, such as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and the G1.
  
  Google Maps Navigation comes with everything you'd expect to find in a GPS navigation system, like 3D views, turn-by-turn guidance and automatic rerouting. If you have a phone running Android 1.6, you can download an updated version of Google Maps from the Android Market to use Navigation today.
  
  One feature not available in the Android 1.6 version is the "navigate to" voice command. However a new 'Layers' feature is available. Layers lets you overlay information on the map., such as My Maps, transit lines and Wikipedia articles.

L’article présente la méthode des moyennes sur listes chaînées de points (MLCP) pour résumer plusieurs de ces localisations cognitives individuelles dans un même référentiel spatial. La méthodologie MLCP s’appuie sur une collecte et un traitement de l’information à l’échelle du lieu, compris comme le composant élémentaire des représentations cognitives de l’espace. Elle est ici adaptée à un contexte de travail sous système d’information géographique (SIG) et appliquée à la thématique du bien-être.
