With the publication of its impressive conference program last week, the June 15-16 Rendez-vous OSGeo-Québec is really starting to take shape. The response to the call for presentations that ended on April 15th has been amazing, and what was only a great idea 6 months ago is now turning into an memorable and very exciting event!

On the program:
- 5 invited speakers who will talk about the OSGeo Foundation, its international activities and its software projects
- Representatives from OSGeo's Francophone local chapter will talk about its activities
- 21 local talks grouped under the following themes in relation with Free and Open Source Geomatics:
- A discussion about the launch of an open geospatial data project in Quebec
And of course the social and networking part:
- An OSGeo "5 à 7" (ice breaker) on the Tuesday night
- A boat cruise on the Saguenay Fjord on the Wednesday night, in collaboration with Vision Géomatique.
Registrations have already started to come in, and I take this opportunity to remind you that the early bird rate (25% discount) ends in 3 days, that is on Friday April 30th. Developer Demographics Favor Linux, Dynamic LanguagesFuzzy Tolerance

CNET has an interesting piece based on some Forrester research. It’s a brief article so I won’t rehash the whole thing here, but the conclusion is that as developer shops turn over and younger developers move in .NET and Java use will wane and dynamic languages like PHP, Ruby, and Python will supplant them. In addition, Forrester predicts Linux will become a more commonly preferred choice for enterprise software deployments.

My general rule of thumb is that all think-tank predictions are head-slappingly stupid unless I agree with them, which is the case here. A particularly interesting bit:

Interest in open source is no longer simply about “cheap software.” In Forrester surveys conducted in 2008 and 2010, Hammond said, there has been a significant shift away from reduced cost as the overwhelming reason for choosing open source, with a 83 percent of IT executives citing “Improve business process execution speed” and 81 percent saying “Support company growth” as the big reasons for open-source adoption.

“To see a world in a grain of sand” – William Blake’s lyrical words take on a new meaning when you watch this video of IBM researchers demonstrating their new nanomill technology, which uses a tiny silicon tip to carve out objects and features as small as 15 nanometers. While it’s probably not going to revolutionize map-making, the nanomill can be used for numerous high-precision applications in electronics, optics, and medical research.

From the IBM press release, the demonstration includes a “Complete 3D map of the world measuring only 22 by 11 micrometers was “written” on a polymer. At this size, 1,000 world maps could fit on a grain of salt. In the relief, one thousand meters of altitude correspond to roughly eight nanometers (nm). It is composed of 500,000 pixels, each measuring 20 nm2, and was created in only 2 minutes and 23 seconds.”

Point Clouds as Basis for 3D Computer Graphics BreakthroughLiDAR News

1. Unlimited Detail claims to have software that is capable of producing 3D graphics without the need for special hardware.
2. The technology is based on the use of a point cloud search algorithm.
3. The graphics card manufacturers are skeptical, but the video offers some valuable insights.
A recent Wired UK article reports on the work being done by Unlimited Detail to use point clouds as the basis for a breakthrough in 3D computer graphics. Rather than relying on advances in hardware graphics card technology for increased speed in processing polygons, Unlimited Detail CEO Bruce Dell claims to have developed a point cloud search algorithm that effectively provides unlimited 3D performance.

The graphics card manufacturers are skeptical, as you would imagine, but in theory he provides a convincing argument, albeit the graphics in the following video don’t seem that impressive. Of course there are a number of unknowns that would need to be documented.

This presentation by Michael Olsen, et al concerning measurement of sea cliff erosion in southern California includes a discussion of uncertainty analysis that will be of interest to those having to make decisions about proper field procedures. The research team had to deal with a number of challenging site conditions including the tide, study areas that were disconnected and the inability to create permanent monumentation.

The team was also concerned about the distance between scans, as well as the offset distance from the cliffs, and how both of these variables potentially affected the results. Although there is not a lot of detail in the slides, the methodology is worth considering.

Death by PowerPoint on the War Frontgot geoint?

For most, the PowerPoint can be a mind-numbing thing in an office setting. Often people make them too cumbersome with too many bullets and a long PowerPoint presentation can drive any executive to the brink. Well, it seems that PowerPoint has made its mark on the war front. The New York Times today ran a front page story that features the PPT slide below that maps out the complexity of the war in Afghanistan. And, complex it is. According to the article, the slide has since bounced around the Internet as an example of a military tool that has spun out of control. Like an insurgency, PowerPoint has crept into the daily lives of military commanders and reached the level of near obsession. And, the amount of time expended on PowerPoint in the military has made it a running joke in the Pentagon and in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have included the actual slide in this post, and please let us know if you can make sense of it.

Google has just released new imagery for Google Earth. We don't know the full extent of the update yet, but we've found some of it.

As is often the case, you can use Google Maps to determine for sure whether or not a specific area is fresh. This new imagery isn't in Google Maps yet, so you can compare Earth vs. Maps to see what's new; the fresh imagery is already in Google Earth, but the old imagery is still in Google Maps. If you compare the two side-by-side and they're not identical, that means that you've found a freshly updated area in Google Earth!

You could even use the new "Earth View" in Google Maps to swap back and forth between Maps and Earth view.

Google has just unveiled a new feature in Google Maps called "Earth view". It's quite simple -- there is a new button in Google Maps for "Earth", which loads the Google Earth Plug-in into your viewing window.

Loading the Earth view gives you almost all of the same features that you get in standard Google Maps. The only exceptions appear to be a few layers (Webcams, Buzz and Bicycling) and the Traffic Info. I'm not sure why those were omitted, but I'm sure we'll see them added in the future.

You can get directions using the Earth view, and even load your favorite MyMaps in there. Once loaded, toggling back and forth between Maps and Earth is virtually seamless.

CIA To Use “Micro-UAVs” — the Size of a Pizza Platter — To Minimize Civilian Casualtiesgot geoint?

In an effort to minimize civilian casualties, the CIA is using smaller missiles and more advanced surveillance techniques to target suspected insurgents in Pakistan’s tribal areas. Some of these efforts, as highlighted by the Washington Post, include a 21-inch Small Smart Weapon that is roughly the diameter of a coffee cup with four different guidance systems that allow it to home in on targets as small as a single person, in complete darkness, as well as “Micro-UAVs.” These are un-manned surveillance drones that carry no weapons and can be roughly the size of a pizza platter. They are capable of monitoring potential targets at close range, for hours or days at a stretch. At night, they can be nearly impossible to detect. Wow. Little pizza platter-sized drones floating through the air – without anyone seeing them. Invisible GEOINT that causes more accuracy and decreases the likelihood for civilian casualties. GeoMarks and Marking up GeoPDF Files with ToolbarGeoPDF

Hrrmm... it's been a while, I see. High time for a new post!

We recently got an email from a customer who, let's say, had some justified questions about our marketing message and how he perceived our products to behave with respect to GeoMarks and markup. The Toolbar provides a set of tools for placing geospatial markups, or GeoMarks, on GeoPDF files. If you have the Toolbar installed in Adobe Acrobat of any flavor, you can markup GeoPDF and other geospatial PDF files such as those created by ArcMap or Microstation that have been GeoMark enabled. GeoMark enabling is essentially permission from TerraGo to use the markup tools in Toolbar. However, TerraGo's is not the only permission needed to mark things up using free tools: there is also Adobe's when using Reader. If a GeoPDF file is to be marked up in Reader with Toolbar, the file must be GeoMark enabled by TerraGo software and enabled for commenting by Adobe software.

GeoMark enabling can happen two ways. First, any GeoPDF file created by recent versions of TerraGo software are automatically GeoMark enabled. Easy enough. Second, TerraGo Composer has the capability to GeoMark enable any supported geospatial PDF file. As mentioned, GeoMark enabled geospatial PDF file can be marked up by the Toolbar in any flavor of Acrobat capable of hosting it. Using Acrobat has many, many advantages over plain Reader because Adobe's comment enabling restricts a variety of modifications and access to the PDF file that could be useful in different workflows. If Reader is required, then PDF files must be comment enabled by Acrobat software. The requirement is not unique to TerraGo's markups -- Adobe's markup tools share similar restrictions.

Adobe's comment enabling can happen in a couple of ways. The first is PDF file can be brought into Adobe Acrobat Pro or Pro Extended. There are two ways to get to the goods:

The other way to enable commenting in Reader is to use Adobe's LiveCycle server.

There are a variety of licensing issues surrounding comment enabling with Acrobat, so I kindly refer you to your friendly neighborhood Adobe account manager to explain the intricacies of their licensing policies.

To summarize:

* to markup any PDF file, use Acrobat

* to markup a PDF file in Reader, it must be comment enabled by Adobe software

* to apply GeoMarks to a geospatial PDF file, use Composer

* to apply GeoMarks to a geospatial PDF file with Toolbar, the file must be GeoMark enabled by TerraGo software

Descartes is done. What's it for? Appealing precision plotting of polygons resulting from analysis of spatial data, holes and all. Examples of using it to produce figures for the Shapely manual are at [github.com] . The figures seem to be working:

The first impression you get is that its attractive. The images of geometry (generated by the Python package descartes) catch the eye, and it was these images as much as anything else that led me to trying Shapely in the first place.

That pleases me, though it's really matplotlib (and the Agg backend) that make the figures shine. Descartes just makes it simple to plug in GIS type data. The Shapely manual is not quite finished, but closer every day.

Google Maps intègre Earth View

Encore une nouvelle annonce de la part de Google pour son site Google Maps : l’ajout de la vue Earth View.

Il s’agit donc d’accéder directement depuis Google Maps à la vue Google Earth grâce au bouton « Earth« .

Cette vue est bien évidemment possible grâce au plugin Google Earth pour navigateur.

Les vues suivantes sont désormais disponibles sur Google Maps pour un même lieu :

Bien évidemment vous pouvez visualiser dans cette vue les mêmes résultats de recherche que sur une vue cartographique ou satellite. Optionnellement vous pouvez afficher les noms des rues et les voies routières.

In short, they added the Google Earth plugin as an option to Google Maps. Visit the article for screenshots, or visit the live page yourself. From the cnet article : "Google on Monday augmented Google Maps with a feature called Earth view that brings the Google Earth software's 3D perspective to the Web browser. Earth view is available through the installation of a browser plug-in Google originally issued in 2008. L’impact de l’ouverture de la brèche dans la langue de Barbarie à Saint-Louis du Sénégal en 2003 : un changement de nature de l’aléa inondation ?

La ville coloniale de Saint-Louis, classée au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, est construite sur une île de l’estuaire du fleuve Sénégal. A cet endroit, le fleuve longe la côte vers le Sud et n’est séparé de l’océan que par une mince flèche de sable de quelques centaines de mètres de large, la Langue de Barbarie, qui protège la cité de l’assaut des vagues. Jusqu’en 2003, elle empêchait une évacuation rapide des eaux du fleuve lors des crues car elle s’allongeait sur environ trente kilomètres au sud de la ville. De ce fait, la cité était soumise à des inondations fluviales récurrentes en fin de saison des pluies. L’ouverture artificielle d’une brèche, 7 kilomètres au sud de la ville, suite à la crue d’octobre 2003, a radicalement changé l’inondabilité de la cité. En effet, depuis cette époque, la ville n’a plus été inondée par le fleuve car l’élargissement spectaculaire de la brèche, qui est devenue la nouvelle embouchure, permet aux eaux de s’évacuer rapidement lors des crues. Cependant, en corollaire, les courants marins ont fortement modifié le régime hydrologique. La ville est désormais en tête d’estuaire : le marnage a fortement augmenté et les niveaux d’eau du Sénégal sont de plus en plus calqués sur le rythme des marées. Or, la cité émerge à peine au dessus du niveau des plus hautes mers actuelles. Elle devient donc plus vulnérable à une augmentation, même modérée, du niveau moyen de la mer. Dans ce contexte, la question est de savoir si la prédominance des influences marines dans le régime du fleuve à Saint-Louis peut persister à moyen terme, compte tenu de la tendance naturelle à la migration vers le sud de la langue de Barbarie Ce point est discuté et les conséquences potentielles en sont envisagées grâce à un certain nombre de simulations d’inondation, réalisées à partir de prévisions de hausse du niveau marin d’ici la fin du siècle (IPCC, 2007 ; Rahmstorf et al, 2007 ; Grinsted et al, 2009). Une modélisation de la propagation des inondations dans la cité en fonction de ces divers scénarii est proposée. Elle montre que la ville coloniale pourrait être inondée lors des plus hautes eaux annuelles au cours du xxi^e siècle.
