Imagery from NASA released this week also provides a good look at the status of the spill – NOAA used data from the Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument from the Terra satellite on April 26, 27 and 29 to capture the extent of the oil spill, which measured 600-square-miles. The MODIS instrument flies aboard both the Terra and Aqua satellites.

Les archives de Paris mettent en ligne leurs archives, en particulier l'état civile et surtout les plans cadastraux de Paris et des communes annexées, avant et après 1860. On entre dans la recherche par arrondissement, puis par quartier et voies. On découvre des quartiers renouvelés après 1860, ce qui permet de créer des études diachroniques précises, avant et après 1860, à intégrer avec des plans de Paris de la fin du XIXème depuis le site de David Rumsey, puis des images plus récentes dans un globe virtuel.

Support de WMTS dans gvSIG mini 0.2 !

La version 0.2 de gvSIG Mini pour Android supporte WMTS (cf. ici) ! Plutôt une bonne nouvelle pour WMTS même si cela reste un support très discret.

Pour l’instant, WMTS est plutôt intimiste. Regardez ici pour avoir une idée du nombre de services WMTS référencés par Yahoo! Regardez là pour l’équivalent chez Google. Pas fameux, hein ?

Last week I presented at the “Location Business” summit in Amsterdam, and it was interesting to reflect on just how far the LBS market has developed over the years.

One of the points I made was that we are on familiar ground, it seems every year since about 2001 has been the “year of location”, so I posed the question – this year “are we there yet?”.

Well clearly a lot has changed in the last ten years, devices are now very powerful, despite what they may think the mobile networks operators are no longer major players (bottlenecks) in the value chain, and with hybrid location technology from the likes of Google and Skyhook location determination is straightforward and ubiquitous .

More than anything else this last point and the fact that location is exposed through simple operating system level functions or via modern browsers means that it is trivial to add location to any application almost for free. This has fuelled the massive interest in bringing location into social applications, from Facebook to Twitter, foursquare to yelp, people are at last central to location based services.

I tried to make the point that actually places only really exist as a reflection of society..

Place = Location (points of interest) + People

As Gary Gale pointed out in another one of his seminal presentations there is still a “lot of stuff” we need to better understand about managing places.

Surprisingly there was little focus on the years “hot topic” of Augmented Reality, other than an inspirational presentation from Claire of Local AR stars Layar.

Overall a very enjoyable conference, in many ways not so different to ten years ago but now with a few clear areas of areas of agreement.
- Location is now mainstream – no really.
- “social” is as an important contextual signal as location.
- There is little money to be made with pure location outside a few niche vertical apps, it’s real value comes from it’s ability to better customise content specific to individual users.

Do you assume the risks of using proprietary plattforms ?
Keep in mind the following points about using proprietary plattforms:
* lack of assurances regarding the continuous provision or reliability of the service or that it will remain available for free in the future
* lack of control over the content displayed by the vendors on the platform - particularly advertisements
* lack of control over how the vendors use data that is provided by agencies
* the requirement to indemnify the vendors from any claims arising from the agency's use of the service.
* service interruption or unexpected termination
* inappropriate information or advertising being displayed on a map
* confidential information arising from the delivery of the service being used by the vendor in an inappropriate manner elsewhere in its services
* the agency's brand being used in an unwelcome manner
* the agency inadvertently being in breach of the terms of use of the free versions of the platforms.
And of course, data behind these services are never open and can be used only with the terms of services.

OpenAddresses: Create addresses in Switzerland: easy !

The Swiss Statistics Office has allowed OpenAddresses to use their WMS has background information for OpenAddresses.org. The orange dots that you can see for example here are the address points from their WMS.
If you make a right mouse click in the map, a popup will be opened with a map containing the addresses information from the Swiss Statistics Office.
It's quite easy now to create addresses in Switzerland.

GeoTools Team: A faster, better GeoTools 2.7

GeoTools 2.7.x is current development branch (or "trunk"). Consider this a sneak peak of some of the ideas that are taking shape for the future.
First up we have speed. One of the common use-cases we have on the geotools-gt2-users email list is displaying a Map in a Java Swing application. Still it is nice to see something; especially when learning. With this in mind we have recast our initial introduction tutorials to be a bit more visual.
Out of the box GeoTools focus on providing a standard compliant SLD rendering engine. This engine is not specific to display - and actually never loads data into memory (it simply streams it off disk onto the screen).
In the interest of performance Andrea has donated a wrapper that will cache data in memory (storing it in a JTS spatial index).

For more details please see the updated (and aptly named) Quickstart. This functionality has been back ported to 2.6.x and we are soliciting feedback (and test cases) from users.
Returning to 2.7 we have two great usability improvements:
- For the longest time we have had a Query interface and a DefaultQuery implementation. These have been combined making code examples just that much readable.
- We introduced the use of Generics to support application schema work. While we now have a happy team working on application schema; it did impact readably.
  Specifically FeatureCollection < SimpleFeatureType, SimpleFeature > gets tiring.
  Introducing SimpleFeatureCollection to the rescue.
With this in mind a couple of recent proposals have allowed us to write the following:

SimpleFeatureSource source = dataStore.getFeatureSource( typeName );

Query query = new Query( typeName, filter, attributes );

SimpleFeatureCollection features = source.getFeatures(query);

It is all good!
If you are using maven switch to 2.7-SNAPSHOT to try out these improvements today; we will issue a milestone release laster this month.

On the client side, MapFish had to make several choices in order to propose one framework for building Rich Internet Applications. The main criteria of this choice was the flexibility, the completeness, the multi browser support and the power. There are probably several technologies or libraries that are able to meet these criteria, so, at the end, a choice is needed. For MapFish, the choice was to use OpenLayers, ExtJS and GeoExt as JavaScript libraries.
And now, the famous questions: Why not JQuery ? Why not Flash/Flex ? Why not Dojo ? Why not etc, etc... ? Easy answer: a choice had to be made. For more arguments, I propose to read two very interesting blogs:
- JQuery and/or ExtJS I like the neutral approach and arguments.
- And of course, the famous blog of Steve Job. I like the non neutral approach and some of the arguments. Of course Adobe has an answer. But about this answer, sorry, I can't believe the sentence "Create once and deploy on multiple devices". It's per definition wrong, other why would you have multiple devices if you would have always the same application ? Needs are different, users are differents, expectations are different... so applications will be different. It's a nice sentence, but it's not the reality. And if Adobe has 8 millions download of Flash per day, it's probably because users have always the wrong flash version installed....
