  First Google Map with Facebook Places

  Nearby Friends is a Google Maps based Facebook application that utilises the new Facebook Places check-in facility. The application allows you to view all your friends check-ins on one Google Map.
  
  Nearby Places doesn't just show your friends' latest check-ins it also allows you to visualise their entire check-in history. If you click on any of your friends' thumbnail pictures displayed on the Google Map you can choose an option to view their 'Check-in History'.
  
  When you select to view the check-in history of a friend you are presented with a Google Map showing all their check-ins. Each check-in is represented by a profile picture. The larger the picture the more recent the check-in. Each individual check-in is also connected to the next check-in with a polyline. Therefore you can click on the largest profile picture and track your friend's check-ins backwards all the way to the womb (well maybe not that far).

  Spatial Law and Policy: Location and Privacy – What is the New "Reasonable"

  Location has arrived – and it is raising all sorts of privacy concerns. In the past few months alone:
  
  1. Facebook launches “Places” and within hours the media and privacy begin criticizing the service as failing to adequately, address privacy concerns.
  
  2. Congressman Bobby Rush introduces legislation that would for the first time regulate on a broad scale the collection, use and distribution of location information on individuals in the U.S..
  
  3. Federal appeals court in District of Columbia finds that the use of a tracking device to monitor a suspect for a month without obtaining a warrant was an an unreasonable search and seizure. This decision directly conflicts other court decisions, with some suggesting that Supreme Court may have to resolve issue.
  
  4. Media reports that citizens on Long Island are complaining that government agencies are acting like Big Brother by using Google Earth to find unpermitted swimming pools in backyard.
  
  5. Government officials in Germany are considering increasing regulations on Google collecting Street View imagery as a result of privacy concerns.
  
  6. Article details how much sensitive information can be obtained from geotagged photos posted on-line.

  7. Decision expected from federal court on whether law enforcement needs to obtain a warrant before obtaining location information from mobile phone provider.

  8. In Maine, the attorney general struggles whether to allow GPS devices to be attached to citizens' cars by lenders wishing to track vehicle usage for resale of auto loans.

  Each of these are examples of how society is grappling with how to deal with the impact of different technologies on the concept of privacy from a location standpoint. As these technologies becomes more ubiquitous, the complexity of the issues are only going to increase. (For example, companies will use software that will predict where you are going to be in the future based upon where you have been in the past.)
  

  I do not know how all this will play out. (Althought I have some ideas!) However, my sense is that this is much bigger - and the conversation should be much broader - than debating such things as whether location privacy settings on Facebook should be opt-in or opt out. What is needed is an informed dialogue and debate on how location technology is changing our lives and which are privacy concerns are legitimate and which are normal reactions to being uncomfortable with the introduction of new technology.

  Location technology has the potential to save lives, provide valuable commercial and governmental services and make our planet a better and more sustainable place to live. However, it will never reach its full potential until consistent and transparent laws and policies surrounding location privacy are developed!

  In our last poll on the old Slashgeo website (results inaccessible at the moment), we asked you how ArcGIS Online will fare. Out of 212 answers, 13% thought it will be a success and chimes a new era in GIS. 35% stated that it might work if they do it right. 23% anticipate it will never become main stream or is doomed to failure. 7% are simply not interested anyway and 20% admit they don't know what ArcGIS Online is.

  On the new Slashgeo, the poll section is still on the right-hand side column. This time, we ask you what are your initial feelings on Slashgeo's new website.

  As GIS is becoming more widely used inside buildings, facility managers are applying the insights gained from spatial data infrastructures to the spaces inside buildings. There are framework levels inside the building, just as there are framework levels at the landscape level, such as roads and parcels. A few examples of framework layers inside a building include floor levels, walls, windows, doors and the spaces that are defined by architectural structures.

  Slashgeo.org: The first 5 years of Slashgeo in Statistics

  Do statistics matter? Yes and no. Yes because it confirms we have users who seem to appreciate the geonews aggregation service we provide, thus justifying all the volunteering work we do for a community we love. No because it's only statistics.

  While our fifth year anniversary will actually occur later this month, let's use the recent website migration as an excuse to look at the stats today. After 5 years online we:

  • Published 4,714 stories.
  • Users contributed with 3,445 comments, but a significant amount of it was spam comments that got deleted (spam should be a problem anymore on the new Slashgeo incarnation). 264 different registered users published most of the non-anonymous user comments.
  • We had 9,266 registered users. But the true number of registered users is probably closer to 3,000 (last Spring), because we suffered from bots registering ghost accounts lately.
  • We generally got between 25,000 and 40,000 hits every day, with a total for the 5 years of over 25,8 million hits.
  • There was close to 2,000 users reading us via our previous Daily Newsletters (if you want to continue receiving it, you must subscribe to it again on this new Slashgeo website)
  • There was 3,084 people subscribed to our RSS feed, plus the 4,179 people following us via Google Reader.
  • Our most active single story had 32 comments (next one was 24).
  • The 10 most active Slashgeo editors individually published between 10 and thousands of stories. The site would not exist without this collaboration of volunteers.
  • The site also rely on user submissions, with some 7 users got over 10 story submissions published. With the gold medal going to user 'geognerd' with 17 published submissions.

  Have I forgot anything?

  So, if you're a company and want to benefit from the traffic we get, you can contribute to the site to get visibility in several ways, including getting into our top donors list (right-hand side column).

  With the new Slashgeo, we should have access to much more precise statistics for the future, not that they matter that much. Don't hesitate to contact us to improve the site and contribute to it.

  Baptisé « The Wilderness Downtown« , le projet a été créé par l’écrivain / réalisateur Chris Milk avec le groupe Arcade Fire et Google.

  

  La particularité de ce projet sur le web et pour le navigateur web permet de créer une expérience qui n’est pas seulement personnalisé, mais aussi profondément personnel pour chaque spectateur. « The Wilderness Downtown » vous emmène à travers les rues de la ville où vous avez grandi.

  A Google Maps Based Music Video

  The Wilderness Downtown
  
  This impressive Google Chrome experiment combines video, Google Maps and Google Street View and choreographed multiple windows to help demonstrate what is possible with HTML5. The experiment is an interactive interpretation of Arcade Fire's song "We Used To Wait" and was built entirely with the latest open web technologies, including HTML5 video, audio, and canvas.
  
  The Google Map tiles used in the experiment are rendered, zoomed, and rotated in a scripted 3D environment. Animated sprites are composited directly over Google Maps satellite and Street Views. The animated sprites include flocking birds and animated trees.
  
  The Google Maps API is also used for fetching dynamic routes to user chosen destinations and checking Street View content at points along the route. With so much going on the experiment is very processor intensive. It took about ten minutes to load on my desktop but the wait was definitely worth it.

  Being that I’m a planning and transit buff, I take a lot of pictures of urban spaces and infrastructure for use in my planning work. I post many of the pictures to Flickr, as the site’s a great service and it supports geotagged photos taken with my GPS camera. With the exception of pictures of family and friends, all of my pictures are public and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution, Noncommercial, Share Alike license. This allows anyone to use my photographs for most uses, explicitly non-commercial use, provided they note that I am the source of the image. Well, what happens when someone you disagree with uses that image to promote his or her agenda? What if that person is Senator John McCain?

  Google Earth Blog: Hurricane Katrina, Five Years Later

  Yesterday marked the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall in New Orleans, Louisiana, causing over $80 billion in damage and killing nearly 2,000 people. Google Earth Blog offered a great deal of coverage to the event, as Google was able to contribute a variety of imagery updates and other resources to help. I had just started running Google Earth Hacks at that time, and users submitted quite a few KML files related to the hurricane.

  Despite only being on the market as "Google Earth" for a few months (it was previously available as "Keyhole", though it was far less popular) many people, such as this couple, were able to use Google's oft-updated imagery of the area to see the condition of their home.

  

  In early 2007, after having posted post-Katrina imagery in Google Earth, they reverted the default layer to pre-Katrina imagery. While this was only done to insure the highest quality imagery, Google caught a lot of flack for this and resolved it a few days later.

  Late last week, Google posted a short entry that recognized the anniversary of Katrina. As they mention in the article, Google Earth's historical imagery tool is a great way to look back and see how the city changed from pre-Katrina, after the storm hit, and how it looks today.

  Welcome to the Monday Morning News Kick Off post. We hope everyone enjoyed the last official August weekend of 2010. Whether you were watching Entourage, or watching the Emmy Awards (go Modern Family!) last night, the inevitable was going to happen: Monday morning would eventually arrive. But fret not. We have pulled together all the news you need to ease the transition back into the real world. So, as we always say, fire up that second cup of coffee and read on!

  Hurricane Katrina, Five Years Later

  Technology Aside, Most People Still Decline to Be Located
  Internet companies have appropriated the real estate business’s mantra — it’s all about location, location, location. But while a home on the beach will always be an easy sell, it may be more difficult to persuade people to start using location-based Web services. Big companies and start-ups alike — including Google, Foursquare, Gowalla, Shopkick and most recently Facebook — offer services that let people report their physical location online, so they can connect with friends or receive coupons. Venture capitalists have poured $115 million into location start-ups since last year, according to the National Venture Capital Association, and companies like Starbucks and Gap have offered special deals to users of such services who visited their stores. But for all the attention and money these apps and Web sites are getting, adoption has so far been largely confined to pockets of young, technically adept urbanites. Just 4 percent of Americans have tried location-based services, and 1 percent use them weekly, according to Forrester Research. Eighty percent of those who have tried them are men, and 70 percent are between 19 and 35. Read the full NY Times story here.

  Facebook’s Location-Based Programs Mean More Setting Adjustments for Users
  Facebook users should pay particular attention to Facebook Places, the social media site’s new location-based program. Places allows people to “tag,” or add, friends when checking into a location without permission. So if you’re tagged, your whereabouts show up on your Facebook page and your friend’s. Facebook introduced a new feature this month that allows people to use GPS technology to announce their whereabouts. It’s great for smart phone users who want to know where their friends are at any given moment. Some of them already use Foursquare and GoWalla to “check in” to restaurants, bars and other hotspots. But users who are concerned about privacy must proactively change their settings to opt out. Read the full Sun Sentinel article here.

  Donley Pushes Major Space Changes
  With the stroke of a pen Air Force Secretary Mike Donley engaged one of the most complex bureaucratic challenges faced by the service: how to buy, build and manage satellites and the rockets that move them into space. Donley, seeking to clarify what experts say was a confusing and sometimes ineffective system, ordered several important changes to how the Air Force’s space community is organized and to who makes what decisions. In perhaps the biggest change declared in his memo, Donley vested the service’s undersecretary, Erin Conaton, with the responsibility for guiding all space policy activities overseen by the Air Force. The assistant secretary for acquisition will now lead all space acquisition, combining traditional fighter, bomber and other service acquisition with space. Check out the full DoD Buzz story here.

  Spy Satellite Hit by Power Problem
  One of four Japanese spy satellites orbiting Earth has malfunctioned and been inoperative since Monday, the government said Saturday. According to the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center, the No. 2 radar satellite, launched in February 2007, appears to be having problems with its power supply and is being examined. The other three spy satellites, all optical satellites, are working to minimize the impact of the malfunctioning satellite, a Defense Ministry source said.   Murder Maps

  The Murder Map project aims to create the first ever comprehensive picture of homicide in London. On its completion, the developers say it will contain details of every murder and manslaughter committed in London from the crimes of Jack the Ripper to the present day.
  
  At the moment the map seems to show murders in the UK capital just for 2010. You can filter the results shown on the Google Map of homicides by murder weapon.
  
  All Murders Washington DC 2005-2009
  
  Burgersub.org have a number of Google Maps that visualise murders in Washington DC and Baltimore. The maps include this Google Map of all Washington DC murders from 2005 and 2009.
  
  Baltimore Sun - Baltimore Homicides
  
  The Baltimore Sun has a Homicides Map that allows you to view all murders in Baltimore since 2007. The map allows you to refine the results by date, location, gender, race and cause of death.
  
  New Orleans Murder Map
  Shows homicides in the city in 2009.
  
  LA Times Homicide Report
  
  The LA Times uses Google Maps to show murders in Los Angeles. You can search the map by year, address or by name.
  
  New York Times Homicide Map
  The New York Times Homicide Map show murders in the Big Apple by year. The map includes a number of search options to refine the data by race, age, sex, murder weapon and locality.
  
  Orlando-Area Murder Map 2010
  This map from the Orlando Sentinel shows the locations of homicides committed this year.
  
  Homicides in San Francisco 2007-2009
  Google Map of San Francisco murders from the San Francisco Chronicle.

  TBD.com have used the Ushahidi Google Maps reporting system to create a map of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority problems. The map allows TBD.com's readers to see at a glance where there are current problems on Washiongton's transit system.
  
  Using Ushahidi's reporting system allows TBD.com to crowdsource current problems on the WMATA. Users are able to report problems by directly submitting a report, tweeting an alert with hashtag #tbdwmata or by emailing an alert.
  
  Submitted problems on WMATA will automatically appear on the Google Map. The reports are also listed under the map in chronological order.

  Est-ce que l'on doit se conformer strictement à la dénomination et l'ordre des métadonnées tel qu'elles sont évoquées dans le document officiel traduit en français ? Si nous ne modifions pas le xml pour qu'il reste moissonnable et lisible par les autres sites Inspire, pouvons-nous changer leur affichage sur notre site à notre guise ?
  
  Le moment de surprise passé, la réponse me semble facile : ce qui compte, c'est que le service de recherche (donc, le XML) soit conforme et que les champs soient remplis.
  
  Formellement, je ne peux pas avancer qu'un affichage "dans le désordre" dans une page html soit interdit. Toutefois, je pense que c'est à éviter : il vaut mieux prendre toujours la même forme, et créer des habitudes de lecture.
