Capacité d’ingurgitation de GeoNetwork

Lors du dernier atelier « GeoNetwork for dummies, or how to setup an SDI in 3 hours » réalisé à Barcelone au FOSS4G, certains « étudiants » m’ont interpellé concernant les performances de l’application. En effet, en ces temps inspirés, des catalogues avec parfois des tonnes de fiches voient ou veulent voir le jour.

J’ai pu apercevoir quelques graphiques ici ou là mais rien de disponible en ligne. J’ai réalisé mes propres tests dont voici les résultats (ils confirment les tendances décrites dans les billets précédents).

Les tests ont été réalisés sur des opérations d’ajout de métadonnées avec une dizaine d’utilisateurs en parallèle. L’ajout consiste en l’envoi d’un fichier, son insertion dans la base de données et son indexation (non spatiale et spatiale).

10 ou 10000 ?

Tout d’abord, si l’objectif est de mettre en place un catalogue avec plus de 10000 métadonnées, ne pas utiliser la version 2.4. En effet, depuis la version 2.5, les performances d’insertion et mise à jour des métadonnées sont bien meilleures. Les graphiques ci-dessous illustrent les gains obtenus dans ce domaine entre les versions 2.4.3 et 2.6.0.

En 55 min, 30 000 fiches insérées dans la version 2.6.0 contre 18 000 en 255 minutes pour la version 2.4.3. Par ailleurs, il est important de noter qu’avec la version 2.6.0 le temps d’insertion ne se dégrade presque plus lorsque le nombre de métadonnées dans le catalogue augmente. Ceci est un point critique lorsqu’il est envisagé de moissonner la terre entière !

PostgreSQL+Shapefile ou PostGIS ?

Prenons un jeu de données réel composé de 3700 fiches issues d’un géoportail national voisin comprenant de nombreuses étendues géographiques de type emprise simple ou polygone englobant afin de voir l’impact de l’utilisation d’un index spatial de type ESRI Shapefile ou PostGIS.

Un petit avantage pour PostGIS dans ce cas.

Il serait intéressant d’analyser la partie recherche, une fois toutes ces fiches saisies et insérées !

A Google Maps Lottery

GeoSweep

Every couple of months or so I get an e-mail from someone who has come up with the bright idea of setting up a Google Maps application that lets people pay them to own virtual real-estate on their created map. For some reason I'm not overly keen to promote these get-rich-quick schemes on this blog.

When I first heard about GeoSweep a few weeks ago I have to admit that I was a little dubious about the idea of holding a lottery using locations selected from a Google Map. GeoSweep is a UK nationwide game that involves users buying locations with a 10p stake. These plots are then entered into two daily draws, the first pays out a guaranteed minimum prize pot of £5,000 and the second gives players the chance to win £1 million.

Some of my concerns about GeoSweep have been assuaged by the success this start-up has had in attracting investment. GeoSweep has so far managed to raise over £2 million in investment and have put together a team of 15 who are now working out of their offices in London.

GeoSweep also promise that the odds of winning their location lottery are much better than the UK National Lottery. Check out the video below to view Geosweep's shiny new promotional video:

La firme américaine ESRI a récemment déployé le nouveau programme de collaboration participative entre les agences gouvernementales (USGS, EPA) et les producteurs spatiaux : Community Maps.

Le programme permet aux organisations de publier de l’information géographique rapidement pour le grand public. L’une des finalités de Community Maps est déjà visualisable sur le web : le fond Topographic. Ce fond fait parti des multiples basemaps (Word Imagery, World Street) disponibles sur ArcGis Online.

ESRI en tant que fabricant de SIG ne cesse de produire des efforts sur la contribution, le partage de l’information géographique à travers le globe. Comme j’ai pu le préciser dans mes anciens articles (par exemple: geodesign), nous rentrons dans une nouvelle ère de l’innovation de la cartographie numérique. Les citoyens veulent aussi participer à l’exploitation de l’information géographique selon leurs besoins.

A mon avis, c’est un des plus beaux fonds de cartes topographiques en ligne que j’ai vu. D’une grande qualité cartographique, ce fond homogène respecte l’utilisation des variables visuelles. Les détails se trouvent aussi bien en agglomération que dans les contrées reculées. Cette homogénéité est liée à la combinaison de multiples sources cartographiques qui en font un produit de haute qualité.

Le maître mot de ce projet est l’innovation dans le domaine de la diffusion de l’information géographique au service des organisations et du grand public.

gvSIG Team: Onde há uma vontade …

Há exatamente um ano atrás eram realizadas, em Buenos Aires, Argentina, as Primeiras Jornadas Latinoamericanas e do Caribe (LAC) do gvSIG. Nós, da Embrapa Florestas e da Universidade Federal do Paraná, havíamos conhecido o software alguns meses antes, quando estávamos procurando alternativas aos programas proprietários que usávamos para nossas atividades em geoprocessamento. Ao ver o anúncio das Jornadas (e logo ali, relativamente perto para nós que vivemos no sul do Brasil!) já nos animamos a apresentar e relatar um pouco da nossa experiência como neófitos no tema. Nesse mesmo evento tivemos a oportunidade de conhecer o pessoal da Associação gvSIG e foi numa conversa informal, durante o café, que surgiu a ideia de fazer as LAC do ano seguinte, 2010, no Brasil, inclusive para conhecermos as dimensões de uma potencial comunidade de usuários e sabermos como estava distribuída no país.

Da ideia à vontade não foi mais que um passo e logo se uniram a nós outros colegas, também brasileiros, representando o Centro Internacional de Hidroinformática (CHI) e o Comitê da Bacia Hidrográfica do Ribeira de Iguape e Litoral Sul. Porém como as LAC de 2010 já estavam previstas para acontecer na Venezuela e como não queríamos deixar passar mais um ano até poder sediar as 3as. LAC (somente em 2011), nos foi sugerido que organizássemos as Jornadas Brasileiras, até como forma de preparação para um evento maior.

E a proposta começou a tomar corpo, primeiramente com a criação de um grupo coordenador para aglutinar ideias, aproximar pessoas e instituições e constituir um ponto de ligação entre a Associação gvSIG, na Espanha, e os usuários do programa no Brasil. Alguns meses e muitos emails depois, em abril de 2010, surgia oficialmente a Comunidade Brasileira de Usuários gvSIG. Ao mesmo tempo, usando a lista de discussão do projeto gvSIG e também a lista da Comunidade OSGeo-BR, fomos descobrindo quem já trabalhava com o software por aqui.

O passo seguinte foi começar a preparar as Jornadas Brasileiras, divulgando o evento e a recém-criada Comunidade através de uma lista de discussão em português bem como por um link na página oficial do gvSIG, estabelecidos especialmente para nós pelos profissionais da Associação gvSIG.

Enviar convites, elaborar fôlder e cartazes para divulgação, criar um lema e um logotipo para as Jornadas, pensar e estruturar um programa para o evento, encontrar um auditório apropriado, fazer a chamada para trabalhos voluntários, receber formulários de inscrição, convidar palestrantes, montar “pasta, etiqueta, bloco e crachá”, gravar e imprimir capas de DVDs e embalá-los, preparar e assinar certificados, analisar resumos e artigos, organizar reuniões técnicas e minicurso pré-jornadas, selecionar alguns hotéis BBB (bom, bonito e barato) em Curitiba, checar laptop, datashow, microfone e pilhas e (ufa!!) decidir o menu do coffee-break e escolher as flores para ornamentação da mesa de abertura, tudo isso fez parte de uma longa “jornada” que se acelerou nos meses de agosto e setembro desse ano.

Na semana que antecedeu o evento, a expectativa era grande e a primeira (de muitas) gratas surpresas foi o número de inscritos: 226 pessoas! Depois, pelas conversas ao longo dos três dias de evento, pudemos constatar que uma expressiva proporção dos assistentes não somente já conhecia o software como também o utilizava rotineiramente como ferramenta de trabalho em suas respectivas áreas de interesse.

Dizer apenas que as 19 palestras, 8 seminários e 1 mesa-redonda – elementos da programação oficial das Jornadas – foram bastante interessantes, seria minimizar o esforço, a disposição e o empenho de todos aqueles que prepararam apresentações, nos transmitiram pensamentos e reflexões e, principalmente, compartilharam seus conhecimentos com tanta boa vontade e entusiasmo.

Minicurso sobre gvSIG Desktop - 1º Jornadas gvSIG Brasil

A plateia, então, não poderia ser mais eclética, quer seja pela multiplicidade do público envolvido (quase 100 instituições representadas, além dos profissionais autônomos), quer seja pelas nacionalidades presentes (gente do Brasil, da Espanha, da Venezuela, do Uruguai, da Argentina, de Moçambique e do Peru). Em função disso, no encerramento até comentei que saíamos dessas Jornadas com duas grandes certezas: a primeira era a de que nós, brasileiros, estávamos entendendo e “hablando” o espanhol muito melhor do que antes; e a segunda, era que a recíproca também era verdadeira, ou seja, nossos “hermanos” de língua castelhana também agora compreendiam o português com muito mais facilidade … rs … rs … rs …

Participación en ronda de preguntas - 1º Jornadas gvSIG Brasil

Brincadeiras à parte, sentimo-nos honrados por poder contar com a participação de tantas pessoas, que dispuseram do seu tempo de trabalho e de lazer para articular passagens, transporte, estadia; para deslocar-se cruzando um ou vários estados desse nosso Brasil e até mesmo oceanos (!), além dos trechos percorridos em suas regiões ou países de origem.

Dentre tantas discussões técnicas profícuas, tantos contatos profissionais, pessoais e institucionais estabelecidos e tantas informações e experiências trocadas, acredito que, nesse evento, nos marcaram de forma mais profunda:
- a percepção – adquirida ao longo desses três dias – de que o software, em si, é uma parte importante, sim, do projeto gvSIG, mas o projeto vai muito além. Prova disso é que nas Jornadas não se discutiram apenas aplicações e casos de sucesso, mas nos foi mostrado o que está por trás do gvSIG e o que o sustenta: o fato de existir uma comunidade de usuários que quer interagir, melhorar o software, compartilhar conhecimentos e buscar soluções;
- a constatação de que “onde há uma vontade, há um caminho”, mesmo que não se saiba muito bem por onde ele vai passar. Ainda acho surpreendente e muito gratificante que o simples fato de querer realizar as Jornadas tenha possibilitado que outras pessoas e instituições se sentissem igualmente motivadas, de forma a nos apoiar de inúmeras maneiras e meios, viabilizando um evento de qualidade técnica, pensado, construído e organizado a muitas mãos, de forma totalmente colaborativa, sem qualquer aporte financeiro direto relativo a taxas de inscrição, vendas de stands ou espaços publicitários.

Google Earth Blog: Excellent 3D model of a church in Russia

Located 250 miles east of Moscow in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady is a remarkably beautiful structure. SketchUp user Semenov Nikolay has built a 3D model of the church and it's amazingly well done.

Along with the impressive architecture and texturing, Semenov also built up the terrain around the building to make it more accurate. All in all, it was very well done.

The model is not yet in the Google Earth 3D Buildings layer, but you can get it from the Google 3D Warehouse: Info | KMZ

Last week in addition to the new more open OS licesning, another in many ways more fundamental new license was introduced with little fanfare, but I would argue it’s impact if widely adopted could be far more important.

The new UK Open Government licence (OGL) developed by the National Archives, is a robust licence developed using Creative Commons like language for the specific purpose of distributing Government data. The OGL will be the become the default licence for UK Crown copyright, replacing the current Click-Use system and the data.gov.uk terms and conditions, and will therefore create a simple and consistent framework for the reuse of Public Sector Information.

The Key elements of the license are that a user may,
- copy, publish, distribute and transmit the Infomation;
- adapt the Information;
- exploit the Information commercially for example, by combining it with other Information, or by including it in your own product or application.
There is a attribution clause which requires reference back to the OGL website where it’s possible.

This is a great step forward, we just now need to continue to push public sector bodies to release their information, as one more of the perceived barriers has been removed.

Track Conan in New York with Google Maps

The Conan Blimp Live Tracking Map

To promote Conan O'Brien's new show 'Conan' TBS are flying a bright orange blimp over the east coast for the whole of October. You can track the blimp in real-time using the Blimp Map.

The Blimp Map uses Google Maps to show the real-time location of the Conan Blimp. The map updates every ten seconds to give a very accurate reading of the blimp's location. Alongside the real-time map you can view a live cam from the blimp.

Currently the blimp seems to be taking a little break but it will be back in the air tomorrow in the skies over New York.

Small businesses are often them most nimble when it comes to embracing social media and geo-location services. By not being tied down by corporate approval processes, small businesses can easily tap into the power of these new resources to retain and grow their customer bases. The NY Times today ran a story about how Pacific Catch, a chain of three seafood restaurants in the Bay Area, is doing just this. A few months ago, the restaurant adopted Foursquare, the geolocation service that allows customers to claim special offers and earn badges by “checking in” to certain locations. When people used the Foursquare application within a few blocks of the restaurant, a special offer popped up on their mobile phones: check in five times and earn a free shrimp ceviche or a Hawaiian poke. Another special rewarded customers who checked in on Foursquare with a free side of sweet potato fries. Travellerspoint is an attractive and easy to use application for creating a map of your travels. Using Travellerspoint you can quickly create a Google Map to showcase a trip that you are planning or have made. The application can also be used to show all of your trips on one attractive map.

Using Travellerspoint you can quickly create a trip map, simply entering your destinations. Travellerspoint will then create a map of your trip and automatically provide background information about each of the destinations on your journey from travellerspoint's own wiki travel guide.

If you want to plot separate journeys on one map you can do that. Separate colours are used for each trip and the user can control which colour each trip gets. You can add information about each stop and you can add photographs from your trip. You can even control the curve of each trip line.

You can embed your finished map on external sites and you can share the map with your Facebook friends.

Travellerspoint currently has over 1,000,000 trip stops mapped in its system.

Incorporating GIS into the journalism toolbox isn’t an easy decision for the resource-strapped newsroom. GIS requires software, equipment, training and IT support which are hurdles to adoption in newsrooms short of resources. However, there are options and workarounds for environments with varying abilities and resources.

ESRI ArcGIS: The leading software for GIS by the Environmental Systems Research Institute is the standard suite that journalists will run across when sharing data with most GIS professionals. ArcGIS Desktop is a suite capable of very sophisticated GIS, with extensible architecture to expand its capabilities. The software is available via a licensed and paid model, although the powerful spatial analyst extension is extra. Windows only.

Manifold GIS: Manifold bills itself as not only a modern GIS capable of building sophisticated map presentations, but a tool for visual computing. The software comes with an Internet map server and a programming development environment to build custom applications. The paid model runs less than the leading product, with extension upgrades. Windows only.

Free, open source software exists as well. With a little help from the IT department, newsrooms can incorporate desktop GIS into their toolbox. The open source environment being what it is, training and support will be largely for the self-starter in these instances.

Quantum GIS

GRASS GIS: Free. Originally developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, now maintained by open source community. Windows and OSX, but requires library dependencies and a UNIX shell to run. The novice GIS user or less-technically inclined may find adoption difficult. For them, there’s…

Quantum GIS: A free, open source GIS software by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation that can run as a standalone application (with dependency libraries ) or as the graphic interface atop GRASS. QGIS is cross platform in Windows, OSX, Linux and UNIX environments. Requires installation of additional open source frameworks, but a properly installed configuration can simplify the more complex GRASS. (See also “Using QGIS to open Census shapefiles”)

We must address the user with the admonishment that it is not enough to just learn software — GIS is a rich field of technical and theorectical expertise. Regardless of the software route a newsroom takes in adopting GIS to the journalist’s toolbox, training is imperative, and not just in how to use a particular desktop suite, but in GIS theory, methodology, and statistical analysis.

GDAL s’invite sur le Web

Le trio de stars Christopher Schmidt, Frank Warmerdam et Schuyler Erle s’est assis autour d’une table pour discuter d’un plan intéressant : faire discuter GDAL et le Web.

VSIL est une API de GDAL permettant d’accéder à des fichiers en mode streaming. L’idée est de pouvoir lire des blocs d’images en continu, et peut notamment servir à lire les métadonnées sans accéder à toute l’image.

Franck a alors travaillé à l’utilisation de cette API pour accéder à des images par [HTTP,] fortement aidé par Even Rouault qui avait déjà écrit la plupart du code.

Il y a désormais un driver vsicurl dans GDAL permettant l’accès à des fichiers en [HTTP,] pour lire des morceaux d’image. Un exemple est la lecture des métadonnées d’une image de 1.2GB en seulement 64Kb de données transférées.

Les quelques tests préliminaires faits par Christopher Schmidt ont montré que le surcoût de l’utilisation de HTTP n’est pas rédhibitoire, puisqu’une différence de 30% de temps supplémentaire a été observée.

Comme quoi, après 10 ans, la bibliothèque GDAL continue à évoluer et s’améliorer en permanence !

OpenGeoData: Pretty OSM-derived Art Maps

I'm not entirely sure what axismaps.com does but it sure seems to
involve a lot of pretty maps. This caught my attention when pointed
out to me by OSM contributor RichardF.

These unique maps of Chicago and Boston accurately depict
the streets and highways, parks, neighborhoods, coastlines, and
physical features of the city using nothing but type. Only by manually
weaving together thousands upon thousands of carefully placed words
does the full picture of the city emerge. Prints are
available.

So, Boston and Chicago, but I'm told that San Francisco, New York and
Washington are in progress, too.

Google Latitude Just Got Interesting

Google Latitude

Google have revamped Google Latitude for the browser and added some very nice new features. Now you can view where your friends are and share your location from your desktop. You can also visualise your location history in some pretty cool ways.

Previously you have been able to use Google Latitude from your desktop via an iGoogle application but the new Google Latitude lets you view your friends current location on a large Google Map and also lets you view stats based on your location history.

The map shows your current location and the last check-ins of your Latitude friends. The history stats includes a breakdown of the number of hours you have spent at home, work and out and about. It shows you a map of all the countries you have visited and it lets you view an animation of your check-ins to Latitude for any defined time period.

The animation of your check-ins to Latitude on Google Maps (accessed by the 'view and manage' tab') is a very nice feature. It lets you replay your location for any day and shows the time and location for each time your location has been recorded by Latitude. You can also download the data in KML so there is great potential for Latitude users to create their own Google Map animations or heat maps of their recorded locations.

Google Latitude has definitely now become a lot more interesting.
