Ever listen to your favorite song and wonder what inspired the artist to write it? Curious if there’s hidden meaning behind the lyrics? Starting tomorrow, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a multi-platform search experience to learn how one of today’s most iconic artists shares his life experiences through his lyrics.

In anticipation of the release of his first book, DECODED, which will be on sale on November 16th, Jay-Z and Bing have teamed up to launch a multi-platform search experience and interactive game to help fans decode Jay-Z’s life and lyrics. The immersive online experience utilizes multiple facets of Bing, including Bing Maps and Bing Entertainment, to give fans full access to the stories behind Jay-Z's songs. Over the course of a month, fans will come together as a community to compile DECODED online before it hits bookshelves.

Every single page of the book will be discoverable prior to the book hitting stores, with pages physically placed in locations related to the written content. The journey will take you to over 15 locales; from the projects in the Brooklyn neighborhood where Jay-Z grew up and the London streets where he found inspiration, to the building of his empire in Manhattan and beyond. DECODED's three hundred pages will be appearing in places and on objects that have never before been used as advertising - from pools and pool tables to bronze plaques and high-fashion clothing racks- an array of unexpected surfaces will become the backdrop for Jay-Z’s art.

And Bing.com/Jay-Z is the only place you can crack the clues, locate the pages and see the key decisions in Jay-Z’s story unfold!

People who are in those locations and those of you playing online with Bing will be offered never-before-experienced insights into Jay-Z’s life. And it will be up to you to decide how to find these pages using Bing. At www.bing.com/Jay-Z:
- You can use Bing to search and decide how to decode Jay-Z’s life and dive into the stories behind his songs.
- Bing Maps allows players to walk the streets that Jay-Z walked while you’re locating pages of the book.

The primary objective is to be fast, while offering the essential features expected from a tile caching solution. [...] features:

Slashdot runs a discussion named Pirated Software Could Bring Down Predator Drones.

Their summary: "Fast Company reports that Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Margaret Hinkle will soon issue a decision on an intellectual property-related lawsuit that could ground the CIA's Predator drones. Intelligent Integration Systems (IISi) alleges that their Geospatial Toolkit and Extended SQL Toolkit were pirated by Massachusetts-based Netezza for use by a government client and is seeking an injunction that would halt the use of their two toolkits by Netezza for three years. The dispute goes back to when Netezza and IISi were former partners in a contract to develop software that would be used, among other purposes, for unmanned drones. IISi's suit claims that both the software package used by the CIA and the Netezza Spatial product were built using their intellectual property and according to statements made by IISi CEO Paul Davis, a favorable ruling in the injunction would revoke the CIA's license to use Geospatial. If IISi prevails in court this would either force the CIA to ground Predator drones or to break the law in their use of the pirated software. But there's more. Testimony given by an IISi executive to the court indicates that Netezza illegally and hastily reverse-engineered IISi's code to deliver a faulty version that could cause predator drones to miss their targets by as much as 40 feet. "

After the publication of Acid Maps in slashgeo and osgeo discuss list, we got a lot of interesting feedback from the geocommunity.

One of the most requested things was a demo application. We agree it makes sense so everybody can see Acid Maps in action before to download, compile, install, configure, etc.

It's just a simple HTML/Javascript application that generates random data (100 points) around the world and shows the interpolation results using OpenLayers.

Edmar Moretti: Mais detalhes sobre a versão 4.4 beta 3 do i3Geo

Subi hoje para o Portal do Software Público Brasileiro (PSPB) a versão 4.4 do i3Geo, ainda como "beta". Para instalar no Windows vc precisa ter o MS4W, no Linux, o ambiente todo instalado (Mapserver, etc.). No site da comunidade i3Geo existem mais detalhes sobre como instalar.

Essa versão já está quase pronta, faltando apenas as adaptações das interfaces Flamingo e GoogleEarth. A idéia de um "beta" é permitir que as pessoas testem a versão e ofereçam um retorno sobre eventuais problemas ou incompatibilidades com versões anteriores, principalmente nos casos das customizações feitas pelos usuários.

A versão 4.4 sofreu uma grande alteração nos códigos javascript em função de uma nova forma de desenho das camadas do mapa. Conforme a tendência geral de desenvolvimento de mapas interativos para web, adotou-se a estratégia de desenho em "tiles" para as interfaces do i3Geo que utilizam o OpenLayers (OL) e o Googel Maps (GM). O modo antigo continua funcionando, porém agora não é mais a interface default.

Os usuários podem agora implementar funcionalidades mais aderentes às APIS originais tanto do OL quanto do GM.

A versão 4.3 já permitia a integração com o OL e GM, mas algumas funcionalidades precisavam ser removidas, agora não, tudo que funciona na interface convencional (sem tiles) funciona também no GM e OL, com poucas exceções. Uma outra grande diferença é que as camadas são elementos HTML separados e são renderizadas por meio de programas em PHP específicos. Esses programas permitem processar as requisições e fazer operações especiais que permitem adaptar a resposta do Mapserver aos requisitos do OL e GM, ou seja, não é necessário utilizar o Mapserver no modo CGI e opção TILES.

A conclusão da versão 4.4 está demorando um pouco, mas isso se deve a necessidade de realização de muitos testes, inclusive para funcionamento no navegador Chrome.

Welcome to the Monday Morning News Kick Off post on got geoint? As always, we hope you had a restful weekend spent with family and friends. But here we are again. It’s Monday. And if you think about it, Monday is not such a bad thing for us GEOINTers. The bottom-line is that we are passionate about what we do for a living. As such, Monday just means opportunity (that should be an inspirational poster). Digital Maps Don’t Always Tell the Whole Story
Thanks to Google Earth and MapQuest and GPS and all the other digital mapping products, an image of where we are, or where we are headed, is always just a click away. These geographical services are so omnipresent, in fact, it would be easy to assume that there’s nothing left to map. But the blanket of digital geographic information doesn’t contain the whole story about the physical world we live in, nor does it necessarily offer an objective, value-neutral view. Bay Area map aficionados are pushing the boundaries of mainstream mapping conventions, and their work is both beautiful to behold and fascinating in the questions they raise about how knowledge is defined. Former CIA Director Speaks Out
We are six years out from one of the most far-reaching reforms of U.S. intelligence in its history. In 2004, Congress passed legislation that created the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) to oversee and coordinate the sprawling collection of agencies that act as our nation’s eyes and ears. In thinking about the consequences, we now have an extraordinary World Affairs article by Gen. Michael Hayden, who has served as director of the CIA, director of the National Security Agency, and deputy to the first director of national intelligence, John Negroponte. In short, he knows whereof he speaks. Hayden sees the reform as mixed bag. Like many in the intelligence world, he had opposed it at its inception, noting here that in the midst of war “[o]ur operational tempo was extremely high and we all knew that any major restructuring would be a drain on time and energy.” But given the lapses that led to 9/11 and the erroneous estimate of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, a restructuring was almost inevitable. Congress chose to strip the director of the CIA of his coordinating role and convey that power to the head of the new agency that it created. Read the full SF Examiner article here.

Adobe and TerraGo Collaborate on Geospatial Capabilities for Acrobat X Solutions
Adobe Systems Incorporated and TerraGo® Technologies, a leading provider of geospatial collaboration software and an Adobe Gold Partner, have announced an initiative to support geospatial capabilities for customers of Acrobat X solutions. TerraGo has been working closely with Adobe to provide an upgrade path for Acrobat 9 Pro Extended customers who need to continue to author geospatial PDF files and perform advanced geospatial functions. In addition, Adobe and TerraGo have signed an agreement under which TerraGo is providing software engineering services in support of geospatial PDF consumption in Acrobat X and Reader X. These efforts leverage TerraGo’s deep geospatial PDF expertise and the company’s track record of delivering innovative collaboration software since it first invented geospatial PDF nearly 10 years ago. Thousands of government and commercial organizations around the world use TerraGo integrated software suites to create and interact with TerraGo GeoPDF® maps and imagery, the company’s brand of geospatial PDF. Oil Change Reignites Debate Over GPS Trackers
Yasir Afifi, a 20-year-old computer salesman and community college student, took his car in for an oil change earlier this month and his mechanic spotted an odd wire hanging from the undercarriage. The wire was attached to a strange magnetic device that puzzled Afifi and the mechanic. They freed it from the car and posted images of it online, asking for help in identifying it. Two days later, FBI agents arrived at Afifi’s Santa Clara apartment and demanded the return of their property — a global positioning system tracking device now at the center of a raging legal debate over privacy rights. One federal judge wrote that the widespread use of the device was straight out of George Orwell’s novel, “1984″. Read the full AP story here.

USGIF Announces 2010 Scholarship Program Recipients
The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) today announced the recipients of its 2010 Scholarship Program, for what was the Foundation’s most competitive year yet. This year, the Foundation awarded $86,000 to 19 recipients. Four Ph.D. candidates, six master’s students, six undergraduates and three graduating high school seniors received scholarships from this year’s program. High school recipients received $2,000 scholarships, and all others received $5,000 scholarships. “Thanks to the generous support of our membership, the scholarship program continues to gain momentum and give promising students the opportunity to advance their education,” said USGIF President Keith J. Masback. “I’m proud that our Foundation is playing a pivotal role in these students’ futures as well as that of the geospatial intelligence tradecraft. Read the full press release here.

California City Withheld Data on Fires, Report Says
San Marcos city officials kept secret a color-coded map showing the risk of wildfire danger to various neighborhoods for fear insurance companies would use the information to justify raising rates or dropping policies, according to a newspaper report. Officials opted to circulate a version of the map that omitted the marking of Coronado Hills and neighboring Attebury as deep red, which signifies “extreme wildfire hazard,” city leaders told The North County Times. World’s Military Projects Still Dominate Space
Cold War paranoia may have eased up on the Space Race decades ago, but a new report finds that military projects still take up nearly half of all spending worldwide on space assets. The United States is by far the biggest spender on defense-related space programs, yet its technical savvy also makes it the country most dependent on such systems, according to a report, “Space Security 2010,” released in September. American efforts to project military power across the globe have helped drive such dependence on space power, said military and security analyst John Pike, who runs GlobalSecurity.org. Boeing’s Defense Turnaround
The defense unit of the world’s biggest aerospace company is regrouping after a decade that began with great promise turned into a series of nonstop setbacks. In a single day during the spring of 2009, Defense Secretary Robert Gates wiped out a quarter-trillion dollars in potential bookings at Boeing Defense, Space & Security by proposing termination of an array of programs begun during the Bush years, forcing the company to rethink its business plan and reorganize its operations. The agent of change emerging from that shakeup is an improbably young aerospace engineer named Dennis A. Muilenburg, who may be the most dynamic leader the defense sector has produced in this generation. Muilenburg is charting a course for Boeing’s defense unit that, while different from that of his predecessor, could prove far more profitable than anyone on Wall Street expects. We've covered a variety of universities on this site in the past, such as some amazing 3D buildings at Northeastern University and Bowling Green.

Now, thanks to Darren Davies (@darrendotcom), we've become aware of all of the great geo-related tools being used by the University of Exeter.

Some of their creations include:

• An interactive map of the Streatham Campus. Nothing remarkable here, but it's a very solid use of the Google Maps API:

ou que peut apporter le GeoRezo aux urbanistes ?
Le blog SIG urba est “hébergé” par le GeoRezo. Nous allons donc cette semaine partir à la découverte de ce réseau qui s'occupe de géo … matique.Tout d'abord il s'agit ici, et c'est tout à fait remarquable, d'une association. Une association loi 1901 tout ce qu'il y a de plus classique avec des adhérents qui ne représentent qu'eux-même et non les institutions, organismes, ou entreprises dans lesquels ils travaillent. L'association a été créée en 2004 mais le site GeoRezo existait déjà depuis 1999.

L'association compte une trentaine de membres qui cotisent mais elle est surtout riche des membres inscrits sur le site : plus de 20 000 dont bientôt 4 000 actifs.

Le GeoRezo se concrétise par son site internet, un portail communautaire d’échange sur l’information géographique, qui offre un support multiforme aux initiatives, à l'image de ce blog. Pour la petite histoire notons que le site en lui-même a été développé par les bénévoles de l'association.

Sans espérer en dresser une liste exhaustive, le site offre à la fois des forums, un wiki, une rubrique emploi, des ressources documentaires, …
Par exemple on y trouve la liste des géoentreprises, une rubrique réalisée en partenariat avec l'Afigéo et SIG La Lettre. Une page qui pourrait exister pour les bureaux d'étude en urbanisme si un réseau équivalent existait dans ce domaine, et une question qui revient régulièrement sur les forums dédiés aux questions d'urbanisme.

Les forums constituent le cœur du site avec la liste géomatique, la plus ancienne, des listes dédiées aux principaux logiciels du marché et des listes plus thématiques par exemple sur le webmapping, ou dédiée aux offres d'emplois et de stages. Derrière le rideau des forums, les “modérateurs” s'activent pour assurer la réactivité du site tout en garantissant la bonne qualité des échanges.

Les pages wiki expriment également le travail communautaire porté par le GeoRezo avec une liste des géoformations pilotée en partenariat avec l'Afigéo. Les sujets sont nombreux mais toutes les pages ne sont pas remplies de manière équivalente. J'ai un faible pour la page consacrée aux géoportails des collectivités réalisée en collaboration avec le groupe SIGtopo de l'AITF, association des ingénieurs territoriaux de France, ou les pages wiki consacrées au cadastre.
On trouve aussi dans le wiki une liste des nombreux logiciels existants avec des fiches descriptives d'un grand nombre d'entre eux et un indispensable “GeoDico”.

Côté Blogs on a trois initiatives complémentaires : celui sur INSPIRE, Parcell'air consacré au cadastre, et notre nouveau blog SIG & urba.

Enfin, on trouve sur le GeoRezo une bibliographie , des infos sur les publications (revues et blogs) consacrées à la géomatique et un annuaire de liens vers les sites qui traitent de géomatique, annuaire partagé avec AnnuaireSIG et Petit Bazar Carto qui l'héberge. Ces liens et ces sites sont nombreux ! en France comme à l'étranger, la communauté géomatique est très dynamique et friande d'outils interactifs. Le GeoRezo en est le parfait reflet.

Donc,
- pour avoir une idée des dernières tendances et questionnements de la géomatique direction le forum géomatique,
- pour rechercher une info précise utilisez le moteur de recherche intégré au site,
- pour découvrir la géomatique allez fouiller dans les fiches du CNIG ou dans le wiki, par exemple la page sur les coordonnées géographiques, ou dans la documentation par des liens vers les nombreux documents d'introduction au SIG que l'on peut télécharger,
- pour consulter des entreprises dans le domaine de la géomatique, allez voir la liste des géoentreprises et publiez votre avis sur la liste appel d'offre,
- pour poster une offre d'emploi ou de stage, utilisez le forum Job.

Vous l'avez compris, le GeoRezo est à la fois : une mine d'informations, un portage associatif qui garde l'équilibre entre dynamique commerciale des acteurs et partenariats, un portail internet, et un réseau d'acteurs très actif.

Présence du MSP à la Journée de l’ACRIgéo

La Journée de la coopération en information géographique 2010 (JCIG2010) le 17 novembre à l’Université Laval est l’occasion pour les employés du gouvernement du Québec de discuter des enjeux et d’échanger des idées touchant la géomatique et l’information géographique et de consolider la coopération dans ces domaines. La JCIG2010 constitue une opportunité pour se réunir, faire des alliances et échanger sur les nouveautés et les projets en cours. Elle offre l’occasion de promouvoir les bons coups et de favoriser les partenariats dans la production et la diffusion de l’information géographique au gouvernement du Québec. Ainsi, le partage des données géographiques, de l’expertise et des initiatives, la mise en place de processus de production en réseau, la gestion en commun d’actifs et l’implantation concertée de nouveaux outils communs sont par conséquent de mise.

Telle qu’appliquée au MSP, la coopération entre ministères et organismes, dans le contexte de réductions de personnel et des contraintes budgétaires, s’avère une voie prometteuse. Plus que jamais, il faut partager l’information géographique dans un cadre commun (ex. respect des standards), l’intégrer et assurer sa mise à jour par de nouveaux modes dits « collaboratifs en réseau ».

Le MSP étant un ministère ayant à cœur la coopération entre employés du gouvernement du Québec en géomatique sera présent à cette journée pour partager ses expériences (ex. partenariat INSPQ-MSP, G.O.LOC, WMS), s’informer sur les projets de coopération et discuter des enjeux. En plus de certains membres de l’équipe de la géomatique et de la communauté d’utilisateurs du MSP présents à cette journée, Donald Fortin, conseiller en sécurité civile, présentera lors des Séances de démonstration le thème suivant : « La géocollaboration en sécurité civile : les principes de l’ACRIgéo en pleine action » : [mrnf.gouv.qc.ca]

GIS-Lab: RasterCalc для QGIS

Почти год назад нами было разработано расширение RasterCalc для QGIS, но официальный анонс по разным причинам так и не состоялся. Этот пост — попытка исправить ситуацию.

RasterCalc — функциональный и простой калькулятор растров, дальний родственник расширения RasterLang (автор Barry Rowlingson). От последнего отличается дружественным интерфейсом, привычным форматом выражений, расширенным набором операций и функций. Для некоторых часто используемых операций предусмотрены «шаблоны», присутствует поддержка загрузки и сохранения введенных выражений.

MapLoser: Importing Roads in Afghanistan for OpenStreetMap

I never thought that I’d curse myself for encouraging people to add data to OpenStreetMap. Recently though I was regretting it a little because I had the road data from Afghanistan Information Management Services. Through negotiation between AIMS and Todd Huffman they changed their data license to ODbL to allow import into OpenStreetMap. We were also giving specific permission to import the data into OSM. There is a shortage of usable road data in the country for those who are non-military to use. Being able to navigate quickly to the correct place can be a safety issue and allows for more effect reconstruction and development efforts.

Since there was already a decent amount of mapping in Kabul and Jalalabad it was important during the import not to remove that data. At least a portion of it was collected by GPS and was more up to date than the data being imported. Thea Clay and I worked together on this process to breakup the data, convert it to OSM format and then manually verify it. In order to accomplish this we first used Quantum GIS to slice all the roads by province. I think took those files and utilized shp-to-osm in order to create OSM files. After this one by one we pulled each of the files into JOSM to compare the data to that already available and determine which data to keep and which to import. At times I also utilized Yahoo imagery and LandSat imagery to determine what was the appropriate action as well. The issue of importing data when already existing information is there is a difficult problem. Fortunately we were able to do this manually for a much larger country such as the United States this definitely wouldn’t be a two person job.

The exact steps we used were:

1. Downloaded Roads and Provinces for Afghanistan as Shapefiles
2. Opened up datasets in Quantum GIS
3. Vector -> Data Management Tools -> Join Attributes by Location
4. Vector -> Data Management Tools -> Split Vector Layer
5. Create rules file for Shp-to-OSM
6. Run each shapefile through Shp-to-OSM with rules file.
7. Individually open each OSM file in JOSM, download the data in OSM to verify data does not exist.
8. Usually see this error

10. Merge import data into downloaded data
11. Upload to OSM (sometimes here I had to resolve conflicts)

Things to note is we created a separate OSM user for this import. There was not data in many areas, but the areas that had been heavily edited required a lot of manual verification.

I hope that having a freely available road dataset for Afghanistan will help people living and working there. Maybe it will even encourage them to start adding their data to OpenStreetMap.
