23:18 Linfiniti Geo Blog: QGIS & PostGIS Training at AIMS
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comThis week we (Gavin Fleming, Sam Lee Pan and myself) are doing more training – a week of QGIS and PostGIS. Its a small group this time and they have GIS knowledge already so we get to go much deeper into the nuts & bolts of QGIS than I normally would do on a course (which is a real pleasure for me). Our attendees are a mix of people from industry, government and students – and we have one attendee from Botswana!
Also very interesting is the venue we are using to run the course in. AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences) is situated a stone’s throw from the popular Muizenberg beach, Cape Town. Now this (AIMS) is one awesome place. When you walk in the door there is a statue of Steven Hawking who paid a visit to the center. And the place is brimming with maths students from all over Africa. They are all on fully paid up scholarships to attend a residential diploma course in mathematics which will prepare them to go on to do masters and Phd courses in maths. So they get a room, full board and access to top notch tutors and leave with excellent skills and a network of friends around Africa with whom they can collaborate in future years. The best part is that the whole center runs on Linux. They have labs full of ubuntu machines where they beat out complicated formulas using SAGE and make python jump through mathematical hoops.
Now the funny thing is that I have been dreaming for the last few years of having just such a center for FOSSGIS – where people from all over Africa can come and do a residential course in using and programming FOSSGIS. So it was with fascination, pleasure and yes, a little bit of envy that I was taken around the AIMS facilities. One day hopefully someone with an unbelievable fortune and no idea what to do with it will see this blog post and contact me so that we can start AIFS (African Institute for FOSSGIS Studies)
. We are really grateful to AIMS for hosting us this week in their excellent facility, and showing us what a little foresight and ingenuity can achieve.I’ll leave you with a couple of pics of our course attendees doing their thing…

22:58 Off the Map - Official Blog of FortiusOne: Toolbars for GeoCommons and GeoIQ
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comI first talked about the ArcGIS version of our toolbars back at the DC Dev Meetup in September. Since then we’ve launched our developer site where you can download the toolbars, but you probably haven’t heard very much else about them. Designed to make sharing your analysis easier as well as find additional data we’ve added toolbars for both Excel and ArcGIS. Based on our .Net library wrapper they both allow direct upload into GeoCommons or your own GeoIQ instance, as well as searching and download of data.
With the addition of GeoJoin earlier this year we made it easier to turn your spreadsheet into a map. Still many of you spend a lot of your time in Excel preparing that spreadsheet. Now we’ve streamlined the process even further with the addition of our Excel toolbar. You can download the toolbar from here and once you’ve installed it there is a “GeoCommons” dropdown available from the menu. Currently the toolbar has been tested on version 2003-2007 of Excel and versions of Windows XP & 7.
Now with the addition of the ArcGIS Toolbar you can both search GeoCommons/GeoIQ directly from ArcMap and pull additional datasets into your analysis. One the analysis is finished publish back to GeoCommons or your own GeoIQ instance. This eliminates the step of saving your files from ArcGIS into a Shapefile, then uploading now you can publish directly. You can download the toolbar here and it works on version 9.2-9.3.1 of ArcGIS.This is our first release of our toolbars and we’d love to hear what you think. Look for additional features as well as increased version support in the future!

22:55 Geoff Zeiss: Conceptual Design With Integrated Energy and Carbon Analysis Available on Autodesk Labs
sur Planet OSGeoProject Vasari is a simplified design tool for creating conceptual building designs with integrated analysis for energy and carbon. Vasari is for early concept work. One of its big differentiators from products like Sketchup is that it is intended to fit into a building information modeling (BIM) workflow. Vasari uses the same .rvt and .rfa file format as Revit so that you can start a .rvt or .rfa concept design in Vasari and later open it in Revit for further work. Vasari also supports both geometric and parametric modeling and it allows you to analyze your design for sustainability using integrated energy and carbon modeling and analysis.
The Vasari technology preview is now available as a free download for trial on Autodesk Labs. The technology preview will be available until May 15, 2011. Vasari is intended to be easy to learn and there is a series of introductory videos designed to help you get started.

22:34 Podcast: TomTom, MapQuest and USGS Take the Next Steps in User Contributed Edits
sur Directions Media - PodcastsEnclosure: [download]
One theme in the past week's news was data editing, specifically, an enhanced push to get those who typically don't update maps to do so. TomTom and MapQuest shared plans to extend their users' ability to provide input, and USGS revealed its experiences using the OpenStreetMaps software stack. How will these next steps into geodata updates play out? Is this the way ahead? Is there a business play here for some clever entrepreneur?

22:27 Slashgeo.org: Directions Magazine Articles: Opportunities of the GeoCloud, Geo vs Data Vizualization, The New Geospatial Jobs, and more
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comHere's a few Directions Magazine articles published in the past month that I found interesting:
- An article on GIS Computing in the cloud. The summary: "Author Philip O'Doherty believes our thinking may be too small when it comes to GIS computing in the cloud. One of the big problems with GIS today, writes O'Doherty, is that it is seen as a specialist tool, available only to a limited number of people in a limited number of organizations. GIS as a Service could change the game entirely by making GIS capabilities available to potentially hundreds of millions of users." A snippet: "The GIS sector needs to change dramatically if it is going to avoid being left behind in the new geospatial wave."
- An article on mapping technologies destined aligning with other data visualization technologies. From the conclusion: "However, geospatial visualization alone is an incomplete picture unless it is able to launch other visualization elements which manipulate and dissect information based on an endless array of other visual contexts as well. In the case of catching the bad guy with exploding undergarments; contexts other than space would be time, severity, risk, relevant keywords, category, relationships, etc."
- If you're into SDI, you might be interested in reading this article on the legal aspects of spatial data infrastructures and data sharing.
- Here's an article named Leveraging GIS to Enhance Shopping Center Performance
- Here's an artilce on TomTom's 'Traffic Manifesto'. The summary: "On October 20th, personal navigation device maker TomTom released its “Traffic Manifesto,” a document stating that the company is on a mission to reduce the hassles of traffic congestion for everyone by up to 5% whether they use TomTom’s products or not. The following day, Editor in Chief Joe Francica paid a visit to TomTom’s headquarters in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to get a firsthand look at TomTom’s traffic management center and find out how TomTom will achieve its objective."
- Here's a Q&A on The New Geospatial Jobs and How to be Ready for Them, offering plenty of interesting information even for the already employed.
- And finally an article published a month ago named New Cartographic Basis for Risk Assessment in Latin America

21:54 The Sandpit: How to sort a list using a delegate
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comSorting is a fundamental part software development. This post will review a technique of sorting generic lists with inline delegates.
First, let’s define an elementary class that we will collect and ultimately sort.
public class Person {
public string Name { get; set; }
public int Age { get; set; }
}The following class, Family, will create a collection of persons and exposes two sorting methods. One method will sort the collection based on age and the other on name. These methods use inline delegates to specify the sorting logic, or more specifically, the logic to compare two individual people. Both methods use inline delegates but use slightly different syntax. The last method will print the names and ages of people in the collection. To print this information you must have your solution set to debug mode and “Debug” selected in the output window.
public class Family {
public List<Person> _people = new List<Person>();
public Family() {
this._people = new List<Person>();
this._people.Add(new Person() { Name = "Bob", Age = 43 });
this._people.Add(new Person() { Name = "Jim", Age = 10 });
this._people.Add(new Person() { Name = "Larry", Age = 15 });
this._people.Add(new Person() { Name = "John", Age = 30 });
this._people.Add(new Person() { Name = "Mary", Age = 8 });
}
public void SortFamilyByAge() {
this._people.Sort(
delegate(Person a, Person b) {
return a.Age.CompareTo(b.Age);
}
);
}
public void SortFamilyByName() {
this._people.Sort(
(Person a, Person b) => {
return a.Name.CompareTo(b.Name);
}
);
}
public void PrintFamily() {
this._people.ForEach(
p => {
Debug.WriteLine(string.Format("{0} ({1})", p.Name, p.Age));
}
);
Debug.WriteLine(Environment.NewLine);
}
}And finally, the following code will instantiate the family object and run the two sort methods, sort by age and sort by name.
Family family = new Family();
family.SortFamilyByAge();
family.PrintFamily();
family.SortFamilyByName();
family.PrintFamily();The code will produce the following output.

sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comEnclosure: [download]

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has some publicly available data based off of TIGER Census 2000 that has been modified slightly to include more attribute information. They offer two different data sets, High Population Areas & Other Populated Areas, in which the former is derived from TIGER Urban Areas information and the latter created from Incorporated Places while excluding Urbanized Areas as to not create overlap. Both of these data layers can be useful for most US based GIS projects. Someone could use it to make a basic point-location map for their favorite restaurants in a city and need the bounds of the actual area of extent or analysis could be done with the NLCD 2001 Land Cover data to determine what percentages of land cover classifications fell within a populated area. Really, the possibilities are endless with this type of boundary data. It is a great one to just have on your computer so you can grab an area whenever you need to.
To get an idea of the completeness of the “Other Populated Areas,” there are over 23,000 entries in the attribute table! You should be able to find a boundary polygon for any incorporated area in the country and by downloading it via WeoGeo Market, you can simply use the GeoCrop Clipping tool to get exactly the area you need.Below is an example showing the Houston, Texas area and it’s surrounding towns with 10m Natural Earth vectors as a basemap.

If you haven’t signed up for a free account on WeoGeo, click through to the data on Market and Register in the top right corner. For support visit the WeoGeo Wiki!

17:48 OpenGeo: OpenGeo Suite Community Edition 2.3.0 Released
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.comThe holiday season is upon us and OpenGeo is proud to announce the release of OpenGeo Suite Community Edition 2.3.0!
Our first Community Edition since this summer includes many updates, notably that the OpenGeo Suite now ships with the latest version of the GeoServer trunk. This adds features like Cascading WMS, Monitoring, and much more. As with most major version changes of GeoServer, changes to the data directory structure are not backwards compatible so, like all upgrades, we recommend making a backup of your data directory before upgrading. In addition, GeoExplorer now has a rewritten user guide that includes a tour through all features of the interface.
We encourage everyone to download the latest software. While the Community Editions are unsupported, questions and answers are available in our ever-growing OpenGeo Suite Community Forum. As always, your feedback, bug reports and feature requests will help make the software better for everyone.

Amsterdam Coffee Shops on Google Maps
sur Google Maps ManiaWeedMaps
WeedMaps is a community website allowing medical marijuana patients to connect with other patients in their geographic region.
The site contains a number of Google Maps showing the location of medical marijuana dispensaries in various US cities. WeedMap also includes a Google Map of Coffee Shops in Amsterdam.
Each mapped listing includes user ratings and reviews. If you click through on the map you can view the full details of each listing including the address and opening hours.
The Price of Weed
Some enterprising supporters of the free market have developed this Google Map to track the retail price index of marijuana. In order to gauge the true street value of this globally traded product the Price of Weed has decided to crowdsource the cost of marijuana and post the results on a handy Google Map.
Currently the map only shows marijuana prices in the USA and Canada. Other countries will be added to the map once the data begins to flow in. If you click on a map marker you can view the average prices for weed in that location. You can also view the latest submission below the map.
Warning: Please remember the value of your investment in this market could go up in smoke.

========= U.S Copyright Law protects tangible original works with creative
content but the law also ensures that facts, that is, data that are
discovered rather than invented, remain free for everyone's benefit.
This ideas/expression dichotomy creates a lot of issues in the
Internet age when information is very easily created, shared, used and
reused. With inexpensive computing and networking power available to everyone,
geographic datasets are increasingly being created, shared and used by
individuals, grassroots organizations, and private corporations. These
data come with different expectations with regards to how they may be
used resulting in a hodgepodge of licensing and contractual
obligations that hinders data interoperability. Mixing data of
different provenance creates new data with typically more restrictive
licensing conditions. Public agencies may be unable to mix licensed
data with government data due to restrictive licensing terms of the
resultant dataset, and thus, may be unable to capitalize on and
benefit from user-generated content. Workshop Structure
================== The current line-up of speakers from federal, state and local
agencies, Creative Commons, grassroots agencies, intellectual property
lawyers, the geospatial industry, and research and academia includes: * Ed Arabas, National States Geographic Information Council

13:48 Arnulf Christl: Offline
sur Planet OSGeoJust a note: I will be offline until 2 December. No telephone, no email, no web. I have done this before and it was such a good experience that I will do it again now and then, just to train quiet mindfulness. It does feel a bit strange to not follow every tweet and ignore the inbox for a week or two but besides a somewhat flooded inbox and missing some interesting threads coming through Twitter nothing really breaks.
Ah yes, and there is the FOSSGIS conference that needs to be prepared, and I need a visa to attend Map World Forum 2011 in Hyderabad and the OSGeo India Local Chapter meeting, there are workshop coming up and other OSGeo things to attend to - but all of this will happen with or without me, so no worries.
Have fun,

13:28 got geoint?: Monday Morning News Kick Off: Air Force Launches Massive Spy Satellite While Worrying About Geolocation Services and Much More…
sur Planet Geospatial - http://planetgs.com
Welcome to the Monday Morning News Kick Off post from got geoint? Well, it is officially the Monday before the Thanksgiving holiday. While many of us are gearing up for Turkey Day, or making plans for extensive holiday travel, or even warming up those credit cards for Black Friday, the news cycle is still humming along. Today, we have a wide range of stories — from news about this big Air Force spy satellite launch to news of Disney using geolocation services at its theme parks and much, much more. So, as we always say, fire up that second cup of coffee and read on! Happy Monday!Air Force Launches Massive, Secret Spy Satellite
A powerful Delta 4 rocket roared to life and climbed away from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Sunday evening on a high-priority mission to boost a National Reconnaissance Office spy satellite into orbit. Under a cloudy sky, the hydrogen-fueled engines in the three common core boosters of the United Launch Alliance Delta 4 ignited with a rush of orange fire at 5:58 p.m. EST and quickly throttled up to nearly 2 million pounds of thrust. Hold-down clamps then released and the huge rocket majestically climbed away from launch complex 37 atop a torrent of fiery exhaust. About 30 seconds later, it knifed into a deck of low clouds and disappeared from view. Read the full CBS News story here.Intelligence Bodies Faulted on Disclosure

The latest on President Obama, the new Congress and other news from Washington and around the nation. Join the discussion. The report found that Congress was not properly informed about a Central Intelligence Agency program that explored dispatching teams to kill terrorists overseas; the destruction of videotapes of interrogations at the C.I.A.’s secret prisons; the agency’s involvement in the shooting down of a missionary flight in Peru; the National Security Agency’s compliance with laws and rules governing its eavesdropping; and the F.B.I.’s surveillance of a Russian spy ring that was exposed last summer. The committee did not disclose the other cases in which the classified report. Read the full NY Times article here.Air Force Worried Geolocation Services Help Enemy
In a very 21st-century spin on the old World War II adage “loose lips might sink ships,” an Associated Press report Wednesday claims that the U.S. Air Force is concerned about troops’ use of geolocation services like Foursquare and Facebook Places and the possibility that it could reveal the location of U.S. forces in war zones. Military authorities in the U.S. and other countries have already made warnings about social networking in general, claiming that it’s all too easy for sensitive information to be exposed inadvertently. The Department of Defense had been considering banning the use of social media entirely (the Marines actually did impose a ban) but retreated from this strategy when the agency assessed that social media can provide valuable information-gathering and communication tools. In most cases, however, they’re required to obtain consent from authorities before using the likes of Facebook or Twitter for personal rather than official reasons, with the same security reasons taken into account. Even after the change in venue from Nashville, Tenn., to the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, this year’s conference broke attendance records. More than 4,000 participants had an exclusive opportunity to explore an exhibit hall of over 100,000 square feet featuring 220 exhibitor and sponsor organizations. In addition to this, almost 200 representatives from 30 different countries were in attendance. Read the full press release here.
John Wesley Powell’s Watershed States Map
We’ve covered the Western water crisis quite a bit, from the demise of Lake Mead to this startling infographic about the inter-state battles for the Colorado River’s vital waters. This tension between Western states was anticipated by John Wesley Powell, the great frontier explorer and head surveyor of the West for the federal government back in the 1880s. (You might remember him from history class as the one-armed maniac who lead the first European American expedition down the then-ferocious Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.) Disney has decided to partner with location service Gowalla — rather than Facebook or Foursquare — for an immersive location-based campaign to help people explore its flagship Disneyworld and Disneyland parks. The Gowalla (Gowalla)/Disney partnership focuses around custom Passport pages that not only show off Disney-branded stamps (Gowalla’s version of Badges), but also a photo and check-in stream. Gothic France on Google Maps
sur Google Maps ManiaMapping Gothic France
Mapping Gothic France is a joint project between the Visual Media Center in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, the Visual Resources Library at Vassar College, and the Columbia University Libraries.
The project uses the Google Maps API and custom map tiles to present the locations of France's Gothic buildings. Using the map it is possible to browse the listed buildings geographically. It is also possible to view buildings by the approximate date of their construction and view historical maps of the period overlaid on the main map.
Mapping Gothic France also contains a number of essays and stories of France's Gothic buildings. The essays also use the Google Maps API to illustrate the referenced Gothic buildings.

11:26 [Talend SDI] 2 very simple , yet useful operations
sur Data and GIS tips
Here, we'll see how to sort features by area and how to remove duplicate features.
Sort features by area
Here is an example of layer I got. The representation is not convenient for printing as small features are partially or totally covered by bigger ones. So, I'd like small features to be on the top.
Here is the job in SDI:

1-Automatically generate the schema of the shapefile
2-Configure the input shapefile component
In the shema, choose the one you automatically generated.
3-Create an AREA column with the area of each feature
In the expression, type
GeometryOperation.GETAREA(row1.the_geom)
4-Sort features by area
Choose an ascendant order so that the biggest features will be in the indexed first
5-Generate the output shapefile

Here is an example of output result:

Remove duplicates
If you aggregate a workspace file with a base file without taking precautions, you could get a layer with duplicate features in it.
In this image we set transparency so as to enhance duplicate fatures.
You'd like to clean up this file, removing the duplicate features.
I's very simple to accomplish in Talend SDI:

--
Here, we reviewed two very simple operations in Talend SDI, yet very easy to create.
They are very simple to accomplish on a PostgreSQL/PostGIS Database but not very handy on flat files like shapeFiles. In this case, Talend/SDI is very useful.
Here is the link if you wish to download the spatial ETL Talend/SDI:
