From the Google Earth Blog, there is a new release which brings three big updates. First there is a tighter integration with Street View imagery, as well as a new navigation mode (ground navigation) which allows you to easily navigate at ground level (ala fps). Secondly, there is better/native support for 3D trees. Not quite sure there is an API around it, but at least they are slowly populating GE with 3D trees. Lastly, there is an update the the historical imagery to make it easier to detect and switch between the imagery. Facebook Location Updates on Google Maps

Fourtrace

Fourtrace is a research project from the University of California, Santa Barbara. The application uses location updates that users from Foursquare have made publicly available through Twitter, and presents them on a Google Map.

To use Fourtrace you just need to enter a Facesquare user name and then the user's location history will be presented on a map. If the user name is rejected then the person you searched for probably hasn't connected their Foursquare account with Twitter.

If the Foursquare account is connected to Twitter you can then visualise all the location check-ins made on Foursquare. If you click on the map markers you can also read the Tweet made from that location.

Google Earth Blog: Introducing Google Earth 6!

Google has just unveiled Google Earth 6.0 beta, and it has some great new features in it! The three main features they've added are:

• Tighter integration with Street View
• 3D Trees
• Updated historical imagery system
Tighter Integration with StreetView
Street View has been a part of Google Earth since 2008, but it's always felt a little bit bolted-on. You had to find it under the layers, and it was a bit clunky to navigate around. Now, the experience is fully integrated and it's remarkably smooth.

Similar to Google Maps, simply grab the Pegman from alongside of your navigation controls and roads will highlight blue where Street View imagery is available. Drop him on a road you'll fly right down to that Street View level!

In addition, the controls have tightened up, you can toggle between Street View and standard mode very easily, and you can finally direct people into Street View using KML. It's a very slick experience, and it's been integrated very well. Here's a short video that shows the new Street View feature in action:

3D Trees

A few years ago, Microsoft added 3D trees to what was then known as Virtual Earth. It was impressive, but they only included a few cities. Google has spent that time building a system that could do two things successfully:

• Allow them to add a huge volume of 3D trees.
• Integrate them in such a way as to not affect the performance of Google Earth.

As you browse around, I think you'll agree that they succeeded. The initial release includes over 80,000,000 trees in a variety of cities including San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Athens, Tokyo and Berlin. In addition, they've build out some full forests in parts of Africa and Mexico.

The models are all species accurate, and look amazingly sharp. You can control the tree layer using a separate sub-layer inside of "3D Buildings".

They've been working with various partners to help model threatened forests around the world and have made the forest models as accurate as possible with help from organizations such as the Green Belt Movement, the Amazon Conversation Team and CONABIO.

Updated Historical Imagery System

The update to the historical imagery is a fairly minor change, but should get help make people much more aware of they imagery that's available. Google has found that users are often unaware of the excellent historical imagery that is available, and this update should help remedy that issue.

When browsing a location, Google Earth will continue to show the imagery date in the lower-left corner, which is a great feature. Now, if historical imagery is available in your current view you'll see a small icon appear down there that shows the date of the oldest available imagery, like this:

So what’s new?
1. Seamless Street View: Wherever LIDAR has been used, Street View has now turned into a seamlessly navigable 3D mirror world. No longer do you “hop” from panorama to panorama in discreet steps — instead, you can now glide through a world where the Street View imagery has been painted onto a LIDAR model of the surroundings; as you navigate around, whichever panorama is closest gets used automatically as the backdrop. It’s a really cool effect and it will likely grab all the headlines. To get started, drag the yellow pegman to a place on Earth that has LIDAR-enhanced Street View.
2. 3D virtual trees: A cosmetic addition that doesn’t do much for me, but if you’re going to build a faithful mirror world, you’re going to need virtual trees, right? There’s plenty of different species to reflect the local flora, but that doesn’t stop it from obscuring the satellite imagery, which is what I came for. This feature will be turned off in my copy of GE6.
3. Accessible historical imagery: Easily the single greatest improvement to Google Earth since its launch in 2005 has been the addition of historical imagery, added in February 2009 with the release of GE5. Google Earth 6 doesn’t have anything new of this caliber but it does make the historical imagery more accessible to casual users by placing pointers to the data front-and-center on the screen. Until now, the forensic neogeographer had to use the historical imagery tool to see what if any older imagery was available; in GE6, the year of the oldest imagery for any given view is visible below the scale legend; click the year to be taken directly to that imagery.
The rest of Google Earth is pretty much the same, a sign that this application is maturing. I’m still hoping for a future release where the KML files in Google Earth’s My Places sidebar sync through the cloud with Google Maps’ My Maps and mobile Google Earth for iOS and Android. This has the added benefit of making hosted publishing possible — you could just choose to “share” a particular KML file with the world and get a URL in return, just as you do with My Maps now.

In the meantime, however, you won’t find me complaining about the greatest piece of free software this side of NCSA Mosaic.

OpenGeoData: OpenStreetMap editor Potlatch 2 launched

You may have noticed something new in your OpenStreetMap editing
today. Potlatch 2 has now gone live on OpenStreetMap.org. Potlatch 2
is a complete rewrite in ActionScript 3 using the free Flex 3
compiler. Potlatch 2 rendering uses MapCSS and RichardF's halcyon
rendering library. It's new. It's Open Source. And it's on
OpenStreetMap.org

But, why didn't I notice it?

That's a fair question. You might not have noticed Potlatch 2 on the
main OpenStreetMap.org web site because it is now an editor option.
That's right. If you hover over the Edit tab, you can select from
Potlatch or Potlatch 2. JOSM is also an option if you have JOSM open
with the remote control plugin active. You can set a default editor
in your API user preferences. [Support for the Merkaartor remote
control plugin is coming soon.]

Potlatch 2 may not be the right editor for everybody. There will be
bugs discovered, and removed as development continues. Consider
adding Potlatch 2 to your editing arsenal, and be sure to report any
bugs you find.

making OpenStreetMap great for years.

Off the Map - Official Blog of FortiusOne: Black Friday Battle of the Brands

Black Friday has a long tradition in the United States dating back to 1966 when Philadelphians used the term to describe the disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that plagued the city the day after Thanksgiving. More recently it has come to represent the day that retailers move into the “black” of profits and has been the busy shopping day of the year since 2005. Retailers and brands compete heavily to capture consumers with a variety or promotions and deals. Early indicators point towards this past Black Friday being a strong one – even using remote sensing from satellite imagery to make the conclusion.

We figured this was a great opportunity to take some of the Twitter monitoring we’ve been experimenting with and give it a full blown analysis. Chris Helm built us an awesome streaming client in NodeJS and stored the data in MongoDB, so we could pipe it into GeoCommons for analysis. We are running the data collection from Black Friday to Cyber Monday, but will just be discussing the results from Black Friday in this post.

Methodology

We hooked into Twitter’s streaming API called the “gardenhose” to monitor mention of major brands during Black Friday. The “gardenhose” provides a sample of all the “tweets” streaming at any point in time. Rough estimates are the “gardenhose” collects about 10% of all the Tweets running through Twitter in a day. Across this stream of Tweets we collected every “tweet” that mentioned one of the following key words:

‘black friday’, ‘Apple’, ‘apple’, ‘Microsoft’, ‘microsoft’, ‘Sony’, ‘sony’, ‘Dell’, ‘dell‘, ‘Macys’, ‘macys’, ‘Macy\’s', ‘macy\’s‘, ‘Sears’, ‘sears‘, jcpenney’, ‘JCPenney‘, ‘Bloomingdales’, ‘bloomingdales‘,nordstrom’, ‘Nordstrom‘, ‘kohls’, ‘Kohls‘, ‘Best Buy’, ‘best buy’, ‘bestbuy’, ‘BestBuy‘, ‘Walmart’, ‘walmart‘, ‘Target’,'target‘, ‘Starbucks’, ‘starbucks’, ‘sbucks‘, ‘Nintendo’, ‘nintendo‘, ‘ps3′, ‘PS3‘, ‘xbox’, ‘XBox’, ‘XBOX‘, ‘Nieman Marcus’, ‘nieman marcus‘, ‘Gap’, ‘gap‘, ‘Amazon’, ‘amazon‘, ‘kinect‘, ‘ebay’

Results

The data collection ran from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm Friday the 26th of November. During this time a sample of 371,480 tweets were collected. This data was then filtered to calculate the total number of mentions for each brand across the sample. Next all the tweets that identified their location from a mobile devices were separated from the sample. The following slides will illustrate the results on analyzing the data.

To get a more detailed perspective on the data we’ve built a map of all the tweets that came from location enabled mobile devices sized by the number of people the tweets were sent to (proxy for audience size). You can click the play button and animate the tweets over the course of the day to see where tweets are by both time and location. Zoom into a city to see the exact location of the tweet. Walmart vs Target

While there were lots of interesting trends I thought it was worth breaking out one the biggest brand rivalries from Black Friday – Walmart vs. Target.

The @JustinBieber Effect

At first glance it would seem that Walmart dominated Target with almost double the tweets and almost tripple the audience, but that is before we take into account the Justin Bieber effect. Bieber exclusively released a new acoustic album through Walmart on Black Friday. Of the 62,263 tweets that mentioned “Walmart” 25,505 of them also mentioned Justin Bieber. 41% on the Walmart tweets can be tied directly to their exclusive with Justin Bieber. The average audience for each of the tweets that mentioned Justin Bieber and Walmart was 1,757. The highest of all the brands monitored. When the Justin Bieber effect is discounted Target with 37,353 tweets is actually slightly ahead of Walmart with 36,758 tweets. All the more interesting because Target bought the Black Friday key word on Twitter to advertise their promotions.

We can also break down the Target and Walmart tweets by which came from location enabled mobile devices. When it comes to location based tweeting Target is the dominant player with 1,127 tweets vs. Walmart’s 865. When we break this down by state we can see which retailer has the upper hand across location enabled mobile devices.

On a personal note doing this analysis from a spreadsheet of points to final analysis was about five minutes in GeoCommons with the new analytic tools – 1) aggregating to state for Walmart and Target 2) merging the aggregated data sets together 3) calculating a difference between the count of Walmart and Target tweet by state.

Whether Target’s lead in activity on GPS enabled mobile devices is a cause or effect of their focus on location based marketing through work with Shopkick and mobile ads remains to be seen. It does appear they are cultivating a customer base that is savvy with both mobile devices and leveraging location.

We’ll be following up this post with our analysis of Cyber Monday to see the comparison between the biggest offline and biggest online shopping day of the year.

VerySpatial: The four days of holiday gifts

It is that time of year again, Black Friday is behind us and Cyber Monday is here and everyone is thinking of the holidays to come that get us in the giving mood. To honor this time of year, and to talk about some cool stuff, we will spend this week talking about some of the geotoys we like and may even have. I, clearly, am starting things off with my Jacob Marley impersonation and Barb, Frank and Sue will each take a turn through the week. I am going to harken back to our first holiday gift guide episode of VerySpatialTV and break my selections into three tiers: Stocking stuffer, in a box, and in a big box.

Stocking stuffers

Affordable is good in the current monetary reality, whether because of general economic conditions or trying to dig your way out of grad school debt, so I have a few choices in this category. The first geotoy is the Hugg-A-Planet series that started out with the great plush globe and has extended to include other celestial bodies (Mars, Moon, etc), a plush map of the US, and other great options. For that person in your life that needs a map on the wall, desk, cufflinks…you get the idea, you may want to look at some of the handmade options at etsy. These great gift options are dangerous though because while you start looking for others you will invariably end up with more in your cart for yourself than for others.

In a box

The last couple of years have seen the rise of the in-car nav system, the question of whether they would be replaced by smart phones, and resounding answer of ‘no’. It is clear that, for the majority of folks, a simple interface that lives in their vehicle is the better option. It used to be that when you gave a GPS you were giving a gift that had to be paid for again by the recipient when the maps grew out of date, luckily those days are drawing to a close. TomTom, Garmin, and other manufacturers are now offering units that come with lifetime map updates and traffic updates, just make sure to look for product names that include M or T for maps or traffic.

The big box

This is more of a ‘for us all’ holiday wish. While the Landsat Data Continuity Mission is ongoing with the satellite launching in late 2012 or so, let’s start the discussion of Landsat 9 right now. It would be great (in my opinion) to see the program achieve redundancy so that we wouldn’t be faced daily with concerns of an aged constellation and issues with sensors. If we start the discussion and planning now, by the time it gets to the engineering phase the economy will probably have righted itself.

So those are my thoughts on some of the toys out there that might make the location aware person on your gift list happy. What are you giving this holiday season?

Although many of us were enjoying watching football and stuffing our faces with turkey leftovers, the news cycle was churning on in full force. What better way to end a holiday weekend on Sunday than by dumping thousands of classified State Department documents on the web? Well, that was Julian Assange’s (pictured) M.O. over the weekend and well, let’s just say, it has more than ruffled a few feathers. So, as we always say, fire up that second cup of coffee and read on.

Government Leaders Weigh in on WikiLeaks Document Dump
A day after the whistleblower site WikiLeaks began publishing details from a massive collection of confidential U.S. diplomatic documents, the chorus of criticism from government leaders grew louder Monday. Top U.S. officials were quick to denounce the publication of the leaked documents Sunday. And the U.K.’s foreign office followed suit Monday, saying it condemned any release of classified documents. “They can damage national security, are not in the national interest and, as the U.S. [has] said, may put lives at risk,” the office said in a statement. With Better Sharing of Data Comes Danger
The release of a huge tranche of U.S. diplomatic cables has laid bare the primary risk associated with the U.S. government’s attempt to encourage better information-sharing: Someone is bound to leak. The U.S. intelligence community came under heavy criticism after Sept. 11, 2001, for having failed to share data that could have prevented the attacks that day. In response, officials from across the government sought to make it easier for various agencies to share sensitive information – effectively giving more analysts wider access to government secrets. But on Sunday, the Web site WikiLeaks, which had previously released sensitive U.S. documents about the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq, once again proved that there’s a downside to better information-sharing. The President’s Daily Map (Huffington Post article by USGIF board member)
With the appointment of the new Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James R. Clapper, we have a unique opportunity to apply a new approach to conveying national security information to the Commander in Chief. DNI Clapper is often described as the father of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT). In an earlier job, DNI Clapper coined the term Geospatial Intelligence, and even renamed and reorganized an intelligence agency around the concept. This was not to establish yet another intelligence “stovepipe”, but to provide an integrative framework for all intelligence and operational national security information. Under his watch, it became common to hear every speaker in the national security community say things like “All Actionable Intelligence Exists in Space and Time” — a truism that has become accepted wisdom by all national security professionals. GEOINT 3.0 — WHODAT?!
I just finished reading Obama’s Wars while traveling to and from GEOINT 2011 (31 Oct-4Nov) in the middle of which the mid-term Congressional elections dramatically shifted power in the House of Representatives from the Democrats to the Republicans and made getting 60 votes in the Senate a near mathematical if not political long shot. Since returning from New Orleans we have also had the close call “weekend printer cartridge” bomb plot and President Bush’s book Decision Points released. All have important things to say about the state of and future intelligence, but so did Tish Long in her GEOINT Keynote Address. Before discussing with you Tish Long’s watershed vision for the way the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) produces products so users can access them more effectively, let’s rumble through the other important events of the past couple of weeks. Microsoft Gives Bing Maps photos to OpenStreetMap
Microsoft is to closely cooperate with the OpenStreetMap project, whose founder it has hired. The initiative, announced on Tuesday, is starting with Microsoft’s release of aerial Bing Maps imagery to the open-source mapping scheme’s contributors. Microsoft also announced its hiring of Steve Coast as principal architect for Bing Mobile, saying he would “help develop better mapping experiences for our customers and partners, and lead efforts to engage with OpenStreetMap and other open source and open data projects”. OpenStreetMap’s newfound access to the Bing Maps imagery is “a pretty big deal”, Coast wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Read the full ZDNet post here.

Project Noah

Noah is a tool that nature lovers can use to explore and document local wildlife. The tool is available as a handy iPhone app that allows users to photograph interesting organisms and share them on Noah.

The Noah website features a Google Map displaying the locations of submitted wildlife. It is possible to refine the wildlife shown on the map by selecting from the menu above the map. For example, it is possible to view just mammals, plants or birds on the map at one time.

If you click on one of the leaf shaped map markers you can view the submitted photograph. If you click on the photograph you can view on the details submitted by the Noah user.

Simone Giannecchini: GeoServer Tips & Tricks: Auto alignement of labels within polygons

Labeling polygons can sometimes be tricky. GeoServer ormally places the labels horizontally within the polygon, accepting only labels that "sit" inside the polygon for at least half of their length.
However sometimes the polygons just don't collaborate with that setup, they can be thin and long, but rotated on an non horizontal angle: in this case GeoServer would not label them until the user zoomed in quite a bit in the map.

Some time ago Björn Hartell and Andrea Aime started working on a patch to add a vendor option auto-rotate the labels for those polygons. After a few iterations and work on both sides we ended up with some pleasing results.
Here is a couple of examples from the well known countries map from Natural Earth labelled with the "minimum bounding rectangle" auto rotation option:

Labelling buildings or parcels is another common usage for this option:

The map was obtained using the following vendor options in the TextSymbolizer section of the SLD:

I have been a busy map maker these past four months. My day job, as many of you know, is a middle school teacher. That means that every weekday I attempt to teach meaningful Social Studies lessons to a room full of less than eager students. This year I am trying something different, I teach Social Studies lessons using both Google Earth and Quantum GIS mapping software.
For example, we just completed a unit on Mesopotamia. Instead of a textbook only lesson, first we toured modern day Mesopotamia (Iraq) using Google Earth. After our preliminary inspection of the area, we used a raster image of a world map (Natural World II) from Shaded Relief as our base image and applied a number of vector layers to enable better orientation. Then the students created point files of various Mesopotamian city-states. They also created transparent polygons which detailed the extent of various ruling empires
We have just began our unit on Africa and will be exploring West Africa using Google Earth and Quantum GIS. So far, so good! The students are gaining a working understanding of spatial data and how it can be displayed and used. They are even learning "map speak" - polygons, shape files, symbology, etc.
So, I haven't had much time to make island maps. In fact, Clipperton Island is my first in over four months. I love making island maps, but I love teaching students the craft of map making even more. Let's see if I can indulge in both of these fine activities.

That's right - GeoGlobalDomination now has a home... or at least a place where people can post upcoming geofestivities for all to see (and possibly attend!).

Ok, the site is really more of an experiment with a variety of technologies than anything else, but thanks to Don Meltz it has a kick ass domain name. I had *hoped* to get some time to further the site this weekend, but unlike the last 10 years, Thanksgiving snow conditions were great, so I spent most of the weekend at Winter Park and not at my keyboard...

What technologies you ask? Well, it's currently using the following goodies:

ASP.NET MVC 2 (moving to 3 shortly - and may throw some Razor in just for good measure)
Entity Framework Code-First (officially EF 4 CTP 4, but the cool kids know it as "magic unicorn")
Restful Routing - rails inspired routing for ASP.NET MVC
HTML5 Boilerplate - exactly what it sounds like
Modernizr - javascript shiv++ for making all browsers play nice with HTML5 tags and CSS3
@font-face goodness for the manifesto
Autofac - Dependency Injection cuz' you just know you love it
CloudMade Web Maps Lite (with Midnigh Commander!)
Project structure and rails inspired html helpers riffed from Rob Conery's MVCStarter

I've also got some hacky OAuth stuff in there that I will be swapping out for DotNetOAuth as soon as possible.

Doh! Nothing like launching something (even as silly as this) only to hit some bugs right out of the gate!

From what I can tell this is an artifact of a) running a CTP (essentially a pre-beta) of the code-first stuff and b) not reading quite enough about it. Should be a quick fix, but can't do it remotely.

Description: Messed up fonts on Mac & iPad

I'm using a custom web font, based on the open source font "League Gothic". I used FontSquirrel.com to convert the TTF into the various web font formats, as well as cook the @font-face CSS. And this works for Safari/Firefox/Chrome (and IE8) on Windows, it does not work for Safari on OSX (Mac) or iOS (iPad & iPhone). After some digging, it seems that these browser/OS combos want the web font in SVG format. FontSquirrel.com creates this for you, BUT, you need to ensure that the server is sending not ONLY the svg file, but the correct mime type ("svg-xml" in case you were wondering). Anyhow, this has been sorted out and verified on an iPad.

Better Ux in Plan an Operation screen

This screen "works" but it needs more polish. Required field validation, disambiguation dialog when the geocoding comes back with multiple hits, make it obvious that you can move the marker to more accurately show the location of the venue. etc etc.

Maps

CloudMade's WebMapsLite is cool and really easy to use (great example documention) but Polymaps is the up and coming deal, and since we're all seeking "geoglobaldomination"... you get the idea. Since Polymaps does not play nice with all browsers, the CloudMade control will be the fallback. And since some people were asking about the "GIS backend" for this - it's a table with Lat & Lon ;-)

Support for IE8 and IE9

There currently is a bug with IE8 and the map on the main page. I think it's just a timing thing with the order the scripts are loading, but anyhow, I'll get this working and allow the IE8 yahoos into the mix. I will be making the IE6 & 7 page less diplomatic as well (hehehe!)

List / Map interaction on the Upcoming Opearations page

This is also simple, but just needs to get done. When you mouse over an event in the list, the map should zoom to it.

Mobile Mobile Mobile

The good thing about #GeoGlobalDomination is that it gets us out, and away from our computers. Thus a mobile version is needed. I'm basically waiting for jQuery Mobile to be a little more stable, but will likely jump on this sooner rather than later. As usual the mobile mapping is going to be the kicker, so to start it will likely be a "read-only" application - listing events, and showing a map on the "detail" view. Also, for the 5 of you rocking the WP7, you're on your own. I'm not getting a WP7 device to test on, and who knows what variation of IE6/7/8/9 it ships with. Hopefully it works...

So that's about it. If you have some other ideas, use the contact page (I guess that should also be on the coming soon list!) Hopefully this gets some actual use and good things come of it. If not, I'm having fun playing with this stuff in the evenings!

- Три новых режима классификации для градуированного условного знака (новая символика), включая Естественные интервалы (Дженкс), Стандартные отклонения и Наглядные интервалы (на основе алгоритма pretty пакета R). Подробнее.
- Улучшена скорость загрузки диалога свойств условного обозначения.
- Определяемые данными вращение и размер для градуированных и категорийных условных знаков (новая символика).
- Масштабирование условного знака теперь влияет на ширину линии.
- Новая реализация растровой гистограммы на основе QWT. Добавлена возможность сохранения гистограммы в файл. По оси X гистограммы выводятся реальные значения пикселей.
- Возможность интерактивно выбирать пиксели с карты для заполнения таблицы прозрачности в диалоге свойств растрового слоя.
- Возможность создавать градиенты при выборе градиента для векторного слоя.
- В диалог выбора условных знаков добавлена кнопка «Управление стилями».
Компоновщик карт
- Добавлена возможность изменять ширину и высоту элементов компоновки.
- Удаление элементов компоновки клавишей Backspace.
- Сортировка полей в таблице атрибутов компоновки (поддерживается несколько колонок и сортировка по возрастанию / убыванию).
