GIS-Lab: Условные знаки для QGIS

В QGIS встроен шикарный редактор условных знаков, который называется «новая символика». К сожалению, стартовый набор условных знаков (полигонов и полилиний) новой символики чрезвычайно беден. На встрече ГИС-Лаба в декабре я предложил организовать проект по созданию условных знаков для QGIS. old_Bibigon (который создал набор условных знаков QGIS для проекта по выгрузке OSM в shp) поддержал идею и мы решили реализовать проект вместе.

Мы собираемся создать набор условных знаков, использующихся для создания топокарт масштабов 1:25000, 1:50000 и 1:100000. Думаю, набор пригодится многим.

Порывшись в тырнете, нашёл удобные в использовании образцы условных знаков. Планируется создать около 300 различных полигонов и полилиний, и несколько десятков SVG-маркеров.

Как и в любом другом проекте, здесь не обходится без трудностей. Главная из них заключается в том, что QGIS пока не позволяет использовать более одной библиотеки условных знаков, кроме того, отсутствует возможность импорта/экспорта библиотек. Надеюсь, мой фичреквест на эту тему не останется незамеченным. А пока old_Bibigon создал два скрипта: один для разбиения, другой для сборки «symbology-ng-style.xml» (файл, описывающий библиотеку условных знаков пользователя).

Другая (гораздо менее глобальная) трудность заключается в том, что QGIS не позволяет использовать шрифты для оформления полигонов и полилиний – только SVG-маркеры. Так что многочисленные шрифты с нужными условными знаками использовать не удастся. Но old_Bibigon обещал позаботится о создании нужных маркеров… Кажется я спихнул на него всю самую тяжёлую работу

The MapFish print module used by both MapFish and GeoExt generates PDF maps that can be saved to clients machines. Over time you can acquire hundreds of different PDFs, but unfortunately Windows XP does not generate thumbnail previews to help find them again later.

The script below solves this problem by generating a PNG image of all the PDFs in a folder. The image to the left shows the results of the script when run on a series of UN Mission Maps.

This relies on two programs to be installed. ImageMagick – a free image conversion software package, and GhostScript another free program that can be used to access, read, and create PDF files. You may have to reboot your machine after installing these programs for the script to run successfully.

The script uses a convert utility program which comes with ImageMagick.

It's All About Data: FME 2011: A Retrospective on Today’s Release

About a year ago I wrote some reflections on the 5 stages of an FME release, and as I review it, just now, I have to say we followed them pretty much to the letter again for FME 2011. With fondness I remember the early idealism, then the optimism, then with a little less pleasure, the realism, which leads, almost as if it were scripted, to the usual last minute dramatics of last week’s release culmination.

FME 2011 by the Numbers
As we begin the Dénouement phase of our FME 2011 release today, I thought it would be worth telling the FME 2011 release story through some numbers:
- 25,000: Approximate number of CPU hours spent on the automated testing of FME 2011
- 8320: Number of automated tests run each weekend
- 8304: Number of source code check-ins on the FME 2011 code tree
- 6249: Number of automated tests run on each daily FME build
- 2602: Number of documented development tasks closed during FME 2011
- 1008: Number of in-person attendees at FME User Meetings during calendar 2010
- 592: Number of unique customer requests resolved with FME 2011
- 416: Number of transformers shipped with FME 2011
- 265: Number of formats supported by FME 2011
- 201: Number of builds of FME 2011 that have been made (so far)
- 22: Number of official CD-pressed FME releases to date
- 20: Number of hours of CPU a complete test run takes on the fastest platform
- 15: Number of months that we’ve been actively developing on FME 2011
- 11: Average percentage speedup of FME 2011 vs. FME 2010 across all tests which run for more than 7 seconds

All these numbers add up to what we believe is the highest quality, most powerful, and most usable FME ever.

Driven by User Feedback
We’re very pleased to have been able to implement so many excellent suggestions from our users (many of which we received during our user meetings throughout the year) – including:
All in all, we are proud of what FME 2011 will do for our users.

And why does that matter? In today’s environment of an expanding diversity data formats and data models and ever increasing data volumes, there is more and more pressure to make maximum use of available data for planning and decision making. Our users have no choice but to become the friendly neighbourhood spatial data superhero of their organizations, and our role is to equip them.

GeoServer Blog: GeoServer 2.1-RC1 Released

The GeoServer community is happy to announce that the first release candidate of GeoServer 2.1 is now available for download. The team has been busy working on some great new improvements and features since 2.1-beta3.

First up is GeoWebCache integration, allowing clients to enjoy the benefits of tile caching through the regular GeoServer WMS endpoint. This enables GeoWebCache to transparently proxy for the GeoServer WMS without the need for a separate service endpoint. Taking advantage of the recently added disk-quota functionality, GeoWebCache now provides the ability to set limits on the amount of disk space used for storing tiles, allowing users to control and limit the size of the tile cache on disk. Big thanks to Gabriel Roldán for the great GeoWebCache improvements.

This release also brings some improvements to RESTConfig, which is now shipped with GeoServer by default so users need no longer install it as a separate plugin. Improvements to the API include the file upload operation that now allows for uploading files into an existing data store. This addition allows users to upload a shapefile and have it converted automatically into a PostGIS database, publishing it as a PostGIS layer rather than as a Shapefile layer. Finally, the API also supports recursive DELETE operations, making it more convenient to remove resources that contain other resources like stores or workspaces. Thanks to David Winslow and Justin Deoliveira of OpenGeo for these improvements.

Thanks to some great work from the folks at GeoSolutions, raster reprojection performance has improved significantly by using linear appoximations of transformation functions. This improvement was initially added in 2.1-beta3 but has continued to be improved for 2.1-RC1. Those interested should checkout this article that links to a white paper with the full technical details.

Last but certainly not least, thanks to Andrea Aime for the addition of a Web Coverage Service request builder, a handy tool for graphically building WCS requests to test a coverage service. As clients for WCS have always been sparse, this tool goes a long way for making the service more usable.

We are happy to report the contribution of yet another translation of the web admin interface—special thanks to Oscar Fonts for submitting a Catalan translation and to Geodata Sistemas for funding the work.

Also worthy of thanks this round is Ivan Grcic who has submitted some excellent patches, including bug fixes for WMS layer functionality. Thanks Ivan!

As always, a number of other bug fixes and improvements have made it into this release. Check out the change log for all new and noteworthy changes.

Map My Following

From the same developer as MapMyFollowers comes Map My Following. This new application lets you view on a Google Map the locations of people you follow on Twitter.

The screenshot above represents the geographical distribution of people who I follow on my @KeirClarke Twitter account. As you can see I almost exclusively follow people from northern Europe and the USA. If you come from Italy or Spain it appears you have very little chance of being followed by yours truly on Twitter.

I'm also a little surprised by the geographical distribution of the people I follow in the USA. As I mainly follow people in the geo / tech industries I would have expected to see far more markers on the west coast than on the east coast.

As well as showing a map view of people you follow you can view a word-cloud of 'common friend terms'. You can also click on any of your followers and view a Google Map showing the location of who they follow.

got geoint?: CIA’s Center on Climate Change Eyes Weather-Related Threats

In late 2009, we covered the launch of the CIA’s Center on Climate Change and National Security. It’s charter is not about the science of climate change, but the national security impact of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts, and heightened competition for natural resources. Since it’s launch, the Center has been very busy providing support to American policymakers as they negotiate, implement, and verify international agreements on environmental issues. Why? Well, as we have covered before we are experiencing massive climate change and it is impacting our weather patterns. Case in point: the massive flooding in Pakistan.

According to one CIA analyst who spoke anonymously to MCT about the flooding in Pakistan:

“It has the exact same symptoms you would see for future climate change events, and we’re expecting to see more of them,” he said later, agreeing to talk only if his name were not revealed, for security reasons. “We wanted to know: What are the conditions that lead to a situation like the Pakistan flooding? What are the important things for water flows, food security … radicalization, disease and displaced people?”

While the new Center has made strides of the past 14 months, we still have a long way to go in terms of understanding and dealing with climate change. Here’s more from that article:

Yet the U.S. government is ill-prepared to act on climate changes that are coming faster than anticipated and threaten to bring instability to places of U.S. national interest, interviews with several dozen current and former officials and outside experts and a review of two decades’ worth of government reports indicate.

Climate projections lack crucial detail, they say, and information about how people react to changes – for instance, by migrating – is sparse. Military officials say they don’t yet have the intelligence they need in order to prepare for what might come.

Very important efforts that may be cut back do to political and budget pressures:

Now, with calls for belt-tightening coming from every corner, leadership in Congress has made it clear that the intelligence budget, which soared to $80.1 billion last year, will have to be cut. And after sweeping victories by conservatives in the midterm elections, many political insiders think the community’s climate change work will be in jeopardy.

OSMInterest - Affichage simple des points d'intérêts OSM en France métropolitaine

Cela fait un petit moment que nous voulions proposer chez 3liz une application légère pour afficher des points d'intérêts (POI) issus de la base OSM sur un fond de carte. Il existe déjà des projets équivalents, comme OpenStreetBrowser ou [www.lenz-online.de] , mais nous trouvions qu'il y avait trop de manipulations à faire pour afficher les poi.

Nous avons créé récemment OSMInterest , qui propose une catégorisation des POI OSM sous la forme d'un arbre des catégories. Ce type de classement n'est pas évident, et sujet à critiques. C'est un choix personnel et subjectif. On pourrait concevoir d'autres manières de ranger les POIs dans des catégories. Tous les POIs OSM ne sont pas présents. C'est aussi un choix, mais nous pouvons en ajouter d'autres (défibrillateurs par exemple).

Nous avons aussi choisi de ne pas utiliser d'icônes pour représenter les POIs. Pour l'instant, seule la couleur diffère entre les catégories. Nous ferons peut-être évoluer cette symbologie.

Cette application ne fonctionne qu'en France métropolitaine, car nous n'avons pas de serveur dimensionné pour plus grand. Nous serions heureux de mettre cette application sur un serveur plus gros avec une base de données couvrant l'ensemble du monde.

Certaines choses seraient à ajouter (permalink, recherche d'adresse) ou à modifier. Nous le ferons pour une prochaine version.

L'application fonctionne de la façon suivante :
- Zoomer sur une commune Pour voir les points d'intérêts (POI), il faut zoomer le lieu qui vous intéresse. Si vous êtes trop loin du zoom minimum, le texte Zoomez... apparaît au-dessus de l'arbre des catégories.
- Choisir les POI à afficher Vous pouvez choisir les POI de différentes manières :
  - En cochant/décochant une ou plusieurs cases devant les catégories. Par exemple Commerces > Alimentation et Équipement > Ballade.
  - En cliquant sur le petit + devant une catégorie, vous pouvez voir l'ensemble des types de POI proposés pour cette catégorie, et sélectionner ou désélectionner certains types pour affiner votre recherche.
  - En haut à gauche de la fenêtre se trouvent 4 icônes. Les 3 premières permettent de sélectionner toutes les catégories filles d'une des 3 grandes catégories. Un texte s'affiche au survol de ces icônes pour préciser l'action correspondante. La dernière icône permet de masquer tous les POI (cela décoche toutes les cases).
- Voir le détail d'un POI En cliquant sur un des ronds représentant un POI sur la carte, vous pouvez affiher une pop-up avec les informations sur ce POI, ainsi que des liens vers le site OpenStreetMap pour voir le détail ou modifier le POI.
- Nombre de POI affichés Selon les communes, il peut y avoir une forte densité de POI sur la carte. Actuellement, le nombre maximal de POI affichés simultanément sur la carte est de 500. Si votre navigateur ralentit fortement, vous pouvez zoomer pour réduire l'étendue affichée, ou bien dé-sélectionner certaines catégories.
En espérant que cela donne envie aux contributeurs d'ajouter des POIs chez eux !

In 2010 we used one version for several courses. It is the one some of you know because it had working support for netcdfs in uDig.

Well, while waiting for the next version of uDig with much of JGrass integrated directly and while waiting for a complete merge of JGrass into uDig, we put the bundles at this page.

There are several presentations on slideshare of the courses that can be used both to get started with JGrass and also to do advanced hydrology with JGrass. Some of them can be found here, which is also the place were stuff will slowly appear as it is produced.

Fostering Creativity: Internal Incubators?

In order to stay relevant, every organization needs to figure out how to foster creativity. If you're as rich as Google, you can afford to "just try a lot of stuff and see what sticks". But the vast majority of organizations simply can't . So, what can we do?

Let's start with a cautionary tale...
I recall a few years back when a VP of the company I was working for dropped by our office, and simply stated that he needed our team (of 5) to come up with a new line of business that would generate $1 million or more in revenue in the next 12 months. Oh, and we still needed to be 100% billable, and if we could have the outline of this ready later that week, that would be great.
This was followed by an awkward silence as my team and I tried not to laugh at him. We all said we'd keep him in the loop should anything occur to us. In other directly related events, we had all left the company and joined DTS within months.
So, if that's a prime example of what not to do, what's a better model for fostering creativity / innovation that can actually be implemented in a "normal" business environment? Well, I'll say it starts with the culture.
Despite having a corporate slogan which included all sorts of corporate-speak espousing high-minded values, the general culture of the organization was "duck and cover". Actual innovation was seen as costly and unpredictable, and was likely to get you in some sort of trouble. Unless of course it was demanded you lay a golden egg. Crazytown.
At DTS we have a culture that values being technology leaders. Since we take our culture seriously and hire based on how people fit with the culture, a lot of our staff are constantly creating on their own time. This is great - the first step in fostering innovation! The challenge is transforming these little idea seeds into full-fledged products / services and doing so in a way that rewards those involved.

This is where you come in - how does your organization foster (or hinder) technical innovation and creativity? Care to share your ideas on how small organizations can move from these "idea seeds" into something more substantial?

Some ideas I've been considering are related to creating an internal "incubator", and commiting the company to a certain number of projects per-year. This would seem to get us past the "idea seed" stage, and to a point where we'd be better informed re: making a more substantial investment. I'd love to hear from anyone who's done this sort of thing.

We are glad to announce a one week code sprint focusing on Mobile JavaScript that will take place in Lausanne - EPFL - Switzerland on Monday-Friday February 21-25, 2011.

The code sprint focus will be the Mobile JavaScript development. The main goal is to work on OpenLayers and extend its capabilities to support mobile devices. The second goal is to evaluate Mobile JavaScript libraries, like Sencha Touch or JQuery Mobile and begin creating bridges to these libraries, similar to the way that GeoExt connects OpenLayers and ExtJS.

The content of the code sprint will be openly discussed on the OpenLayers community mailing lists, and we are sure that the work started in February in Europe will continue at the Montreal code sprint in March.

Last fall, Google added the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso to their Building Maker tool. The city was already partially modeled, thanks to the work of users such as gananunez, GecKo StuDio, Sergio and jgago93.

While all of them are continuing to do great work, I want to focus a bit on jgago93. Prior to Building Maker arriving in Chile, he had done a variety of excellent models in SketchUp. Below is an example of a convenience store (and apartments?) that he created. Notice the excellent textures he used, including the 3d railings on the right side of the building:

Since Building Maker is now available over there, he's made excellent use of it. Many of his recent models were created with Building Maker, and as of today he's generated a total of 108 models, 74 of which are already included in Google Earth!

His Builder Maker models are quite well done, too. For example, notice the building below. While the textures are rather fuzzy (not much he can do about that), he obviously spent a good bit of time to make sure the architecture was accurate:

Because of Building Maker and 3D modelers like the people we mentioned above, these cities (particularly Santiago) are becoming quite filled with 3D models and are looking excellent. Hopefully Google will bring StreetView to that area soon, as that will result in even better-looking models.

Today marks the beginning of the Spring Semester. For many students, this will be their last semester at Rowan University. For me, I’ll be teaching GIS II, which is mostly upperclassmen, and Intro to Mapping and GIS, which is more mixed, but often filled with freshmen. I know most of my GIS II students by now; all of the Intro to Mapping students are brand new faces. One big change this semester is that I’m in the Pilot Group for the University’s move to the newest version of Blackboard. I’ve been rewriting my materials so that more of the course is available through the web. In doing so, I’m putting more of my materials out there on the web for anyone to use, provided they comply with the Creative Commons license. While most of my presentations have been available online for anyone to view, the class materials have been a somewhat different story; if I’ve put them online, it was only on my university web page and not a service like SlideShare. I feel more reserved about posting classroom materials online for two main reasons.(...)

In the UK broadcaster Channel 4 are backing a campaign to persuade Britain's fish & chip shops to put mackerel on the menu alongside the traditional cod & chips.

The UK's traditional love of cod means that cod is being over-fished whilst mackerel is fished in a controlled and sustainable way. Hence the campaign to get the British to try a little mackerel & chips.

The broadcaster is using Google Maps to show the fish & chip shops in the UK that have agreed to serve mackerel and those who are still not serving the sustainable fish. Channel 4 is crowd-sourcing its campaign so, if your local fish & chip shop is not included, you can add it to the map.

Using OpenData: Visualising data with Quantum GIS.

The first thing that most people want to do with GIS data is to create a visual representation, better known as a map. I’m no different, so this blog entry will cover how I hooked up the Quantum GIS application to the PostGIS database I created previously.

I started by examining the data that I had loaded into the database. This ability to run fairly standard SQL queries against my spatial data is one of the main strengths of using a spacial database. Having read the Strategi documentation I knew that there were two columns in each table that I was interested in: code: a numeric feature type identifier and legend: an English language description of the feature type. For example I ran the following SQL against the strategi_region table:

This simple SQL statement selects the code and legend columns from the strategi_region table, and the DISTINCT keyword limits the query to returning only a single row for each match. The output shows that there are 6 different types of feature stored in the table. I ran the same query on the strategi_line and strategi_point tables returning 73 and 89 features respectively.

Once I knew what the data in my database represented I could turn my attention to creating a map. As a first step I decided to use the Quantum GIS (QGIS) desktop GIS application. To install QGIS I used yum from the command line:

With QGIS installed I launched the program from Applications Menu -> Graphics -> Quantum GIS. When QGIS launched I was presented with a fairly typical application layout: menus across the top, a toolbar, and then a couple of blank areas where the data would be represented. For more details on the QGIS interface and capabilities have a look at the manual (PDF).

There are a number of ways to add a new PostGIS layer to QGIS (see the manual for details). I used the menu option: Layer -> Add PostGIS Layer. This launches a new window:

The first thing I did was to configure a new database connection by clicking on the New button and filling in the details in the resulting window:

The fields should be pretty self explanatory, the username and password are those I entered when I created my database user previously. I unselected the “Allow geometryless tables” option as this reduces the clutter on later screens by only showing tables with geometry columns. Once I filled in the details I clicked the Test Connect button which confirmed my setup was working, then I clicked OK.

I was then returned to the Add PostGIS Table(s) window where the connect button was now enabled. Clicking on this button showed me the tables in my database that had geometry:

Selecting the strategi_line table allows me to click on the Build Query button which launches the query builder window:

From the screenshot you can see that I’ve started to build an SQL query to select a subset of the data in the table. In this example I’m selecting on code = 5110, this is the code for Coastline (Natural). Clicking on the Test button pops up a window telling me how many rows are returned by the query and I then click on OK. Back in the Add PostGIS Table(s) window clicking on Add finally adds my new layer to QGIS and gives me a map with an outline of the UK:

I renamed the layer by right clicking on the layer name and selecting Rename from the context menu, I also changed the line colour by right clicking on the layer name and selecting Properties from the context menu. I then went ahead and added a number of other layers from PostGIS by repeating the previous steps but selecting for different feature codes. An excerpt from the resulting map:

When adding the additional layers I combined feature codes using the boolean functions in SQL, for example there are three sequential codes that cover the polylines that represent canals: 5240, 5241, and 5242. So in query builder my SQL looked like:

```
I like the simplicity of creating a map with QGIS, but I feel the styling of the map is cumbersome and limited. Next I’m going to try to create a more complex map using Mapnik to render the image.

Turkey - SRTM with EVS Vector Modifications
The map of Turkey on the left is a portion of a 600-MB World Map created by Tom Patterson. His excellent and informative website, Shaded Relief, contains a wide variety of shaded relief maps. He explains how you could create your own shaded relief maps. I have been content to download his finished maps and use them in my classroom. The students love working with them.
I have been a long time user of SRTM data. Using tools within Global Mapper, I was able to generate interesting 3D views of islands. Last week I came across SRTM v4 data at CGIAR Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI), which I call Cigar (See-gar) for short. I downloaded a number of SRTM TIF images covering Turkey, where I am plotting Roman era towns and cities. Using the Shaded Relief Natural Earth 1 world map I was able to plot at scales of 1:1500000 to 1:1000000. When I attempted to work closer the map became a screen full of pixels. What to do?

The SRTM v4 data offered me some intriguing possibilities. First, I was able to zoom into areas at scales between 1:500,000 down to 1:50,000. At 1:50,000 I had to contend with pixels. The vertical side of a pixel in the part of the world I am working in is 90 meters, the horizontal side is 70 meters. Clunky looking when working at 1:50,000. It was then that I had my "ah-ha" moment. I loaded Landsat imagery on top of the SRTM imagery. I then digitized shorelines using the Landsat imagery (section 1). I switched off the Landsat imagery and my EVS precision shoreline cut through SRTM v4 pixels (section 2) and allowed me to determine the shoreline on the SRTM image. The SRTM modified shoreline is now useful to scales as fine as 1:25,000 (section 4).
I know! A 14.5 meter pixel defining a 90-meter pixels leads to potential problems. However, for my purposes, plotting Roman era towns and cities, these SRTMs modified with EVS precision shorelines work just fine.

And at 1:250,000, they look great!
A word about my custom hypsometric tints. The colors I initially took from the Shaded Relief website. But I have since tweaked them a number of times. The current version, certainly not my last, looks great for this part of the world.
I am slowly, but surely working my way around the shoreline of the Sea of Marmara, a place I spent time as a young man. I do hope this was both informative and interesting.

GeoTools Team: GeoTools 2.7-beta Released

GeoTools 2.7-beta has been released and is now available for download.
Notable features added since 2.7-M4 include much improved performance of raster re-projection, and a SLD 1.1 / Symbology Encoding 1.1 parser.
This release also removes dependency on the GeoAPI project, rolling those interfaces into a new gt-opengis module. This removes many deprecations in the GeoTools code base while still remaining 100% api compatible.
As usual this release also contains a number of key bug fixes. See the change log for all the details.
Try out the release and report any issues encountered in the bug tracker or on the mailing list.

The Field Guide: A Brief History of ERDAS ER Mapper

I thought I would take some time to briefly outline some of the major points in the history of ERDAS ER Mapper. I have rebuilt this history from "What's New" PowerPoints and "What's New" documents, software documentation, software media, software code, advertisements, and personal interviews. I do not have as much materials as I did to build the A Brief History of ERDAS IMAGINE, immediately at hand, but will build the history as I uncover documents.

As a master’s student at the University of South Carolina Department of Geography and Remote Sensing Specialist at SC DNR, I interviewed with ER Mapper while at ASPRS in Baltimore Maryland the week of March 24, 1991 and was invited to interview with ER Mapper in San Diego in mid-May 1991. During my visit in May, I met with David Hayward and Stuart Nixon. David gave me an extensive demo of the software. I was very impressed with the software.

I was somewhat concerned when Stuart stated ER Mapper would be larger than ERDAS within 2-years. ER Mapper hired Jill Andrews rather than me. I accepted a technical sales position at ERDAS and started at ERDAS on July 15, 1991. On May 21 2007, ERDAS announced the purchase of ER Mapper Ltd.

He creado un control para aplicaciones basadas en PyQGIS que es una versión muy simplificada con relación a la tabla de contenido de QGIS. La principal diferencia es que la mía no maneja grupos de capas. El control está basado también en la leyenda de OpenOceanMap, escrita por Aaron Racicot, pero en lugar de trabajar con controles QCheckBox, utiliza QTreeWidgetItem para representar cada capa del mapa.

Maybe not: A UK study found only 8% of shoppers want offers on their mobile when in the supermarket. In addition a trend toward "locationless checkin" is growing. Editor in Chief Joe Francica interviewed ter Haar during the Geospatial World Conference in Hyderabad, India, on January 17th. They discussed the OS's Open Data initiative, the new Open Government License, and GeoVation, a mapping contest to spur innovation among developers to help address some of the challenges in the UK using geospatial data.

GeoTools Team: End of GeoAPI involvement

The upcoming release of GeoTools represents a turning point for the GeoTools project - we are no longer taking part in GeoAPI.

Back in the dawn of time (well 2003) the GeoTools project started an experiment, and outreach program in the form of the GeoAPI project. Specifically this was an effort to collaborate with the deegree library (makes sense as both projects are LGPL and are working in the same domain).

Although not successful in its original goals of collaboration the GeoAPI project served as a great line of communication to the standards community. We would like to thank many of the amazing individuals who contributed their time, effort and expertise and extend an invitation for direct collaboration in the future.

A few things to keep in mind:
- We must emphasis that this decision does not break any client code
- The org.opengis interfaces will remain in the GeoTools library as part of the gt-opengis module
- As part of this change a lot of "deprecations" have already been cleaned up (representing areas of GeoAPI where the standard had passed out of fashion)
- GeoTools is committed to providing a stable API for your next (or current) Java project
The GeoAPI project is survived as an OGC Working group.

Le sens du placement est le résultat d’une enquête originale concernant les pratiques de scolarisation dans l’agglomération parisienne à l’entrée au collège au début des années 2000 conjointement menée par Franck Poupeau, sociologue chargé de recherche au Centre de sociologie européenne rattaché au CNRS et Jean-Christophe François, maître de conférences en géographie à l’université Paris-VII Denis Diderot.

Les auteurs sont tous les deux spécialistes de la question des inégalités scolaires. En 2005, ils avaient rédigé à la demande du ministère de l’Éducation nationale une étude sur les disparités territoriales dans le système scolaire intitulée : Les pratiques d'évitement scolaire en Ile-de-France. De l'espace résidentiel à l'espace scolaire. Cette étude a coïncidé au plus fort du débat sur l’assouplissement de la carte scolaire.
