m.k.ge•o•mat•ics |ˌjēəˈmatiks|: Hand-Rolled Vector Tiles – TileStache

A few weeks ago I found myself surfing the intertubes for instructions on how to serve up some vector tile goodness. That search came up pretty much empty, except for one glimmering thread of hope. The answer, TileStache { <– Imagine that’s a mustache on it’s side.

TileStache is a Python-based server application that can serve up map tiles based on rendered geographic data.

By design, TileStache can be used to serve up stylish TMS tiles using mapnik map files, and can also be used to locally cache remote-services via proxy. What I’m most interested in though, is it’s ability to deploy vector tiles. So what are vector tiles? Think TMS tiles… but replace representations of the geometries through images, with GeoJSON. Pretty wild right? Specifically, the TileStache PostGeoJSON Provider can be used to connect TileStache to a PostGIS data source, and return a tile comprised entirely of GeoJSON data.

For example, data from a PostGIS data source can be rendered as an image tile (…/10/16/357.png), like this:

So what are the advantages of using vector tiles? You can already use OpenLayers’ GeoJSON format reader to populate a vector layer in OL. It’s an issue of size. Highly complex geometries can be large in size, and requesting all that data at once can be time consuming. Vector tiles approach this problem using the same answer as TMS… only request those sections of data which you need at that time. By only requesting those tiles within the user’s current extent + a small buffer, the need to download large geometries at once can be negated. Furthermore, just as TMS’s can be pre-cached to disk (seeded), so can vector tiles.

One example of this is serving up a combined NFS boundary dataset compiled by my good pal, Greg ( [www.chopshopgeo.com] ). These boundaries are dense and displaying them at their full extent & raw level of detail is expensive. But by breaking the vector representations of these geometries up into a standard tile scheme, only those tiles which we need are requested, and only when we need them. As a side note, in addition to tiling, I also simplified the boundaries, to promote faster load time at small-scales. The least granular vector representations display at the smallest zoom-scales, while the highest (raw, unsimplified) level of granularity displays only at the largest zoom-scales.

Additionally, using vector representations of geometry rather then cached images allows styling of those geometries on the fly. Polymaps, the only display client I’ve found so far that can consume vector tiles out-of-the-box, renders these tiles as SVG elements. Because of this, unique styling can be applied via CSS; controlling the color, stroke, fill, etc. of each geometry in response to both attributes associated with the geometry (see image below) or user input… ala the Polymaps example page.

The above example converts data from the USGS Instantaneous Values Web Service (part of the USGS Water Date for the Nation program) as a JSON response to GeoJSON. These data points are then symbolized dynamically using Polymaps. More on that later.

Geoff Zeiss: Consumers and Smart Grid: Reducing Peak Demand

Most electric power utilities are involved in smart grid programs. Smart grid programs involve smart meters, bidirection communications networks, time of use pricing, self-healing distribution networks, demand response, substation automation, distributed generation, and so on. But in many countries the focus has been primarily on programs that directly impact the consumer, because ultimately the consumer is going to pay for smart grid.

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced in 2007 as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act and refinanced in 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act a grant program called the Smart Grid Investment Grant Program (SGIG). There were two types of funding for this program, smaller projects in which the federal share would be $300,000 to $20,000,000 and larger projects in which the federal cost share would be $20,000,000 to $200,000,000.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability is requiring some utilities receiving ARRA SGIG funds to survey how consumers are responding to smart grid technologies. One of these is Oklahoma Gas & Electric (OGE), who received a $130 million ARRA SGIG grant. OG&E is in the middle of a three-year deployment of smart grid technology across its service territory which includes the installation of smart meters, a secure wireless network and smart equipment on its distribution system to increase reliability and reduce operational expenses.

OGE is currently conducting a consumer survey with help from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Department of Energy. OGE’s study is looking at smart consumer devices, time of use pricing and customer education to understand how consumer electric power consumption patterns can be changed. Pilots in other jurisdictions have shown that peak demand can be reduced significantly by a combination of smart meters and time of use pricing.

The first phase of OGE’s study involved about 2500 volunteer residents and small businesses who participated in OGE's time of use pricing programs. Customers were provided with smart thermostats, access to Silver Spring’s web portal, CustomerIQ, and home energy displays. Participants were divided into two groups. One group saw a fixed price difference between peak ($0.23 per kWh) and off-peak ($0.042 per kWh) pricing. The other group was on variable peak pricing, which was set the day before, and could change hourly between $0.045 to $0.46 per kWh. It was found that participants in the Variable Peak Pricing program used much less electricity when prices were high. For this group, average peak period electricity use was up to 33 percent lower during high price periods. This is a dramatically greater reduction in peak power demand as a result of time of use pricing than has been found in other jurisdictions but similar to other pilots with smart themostats and time of use pricing.

OGE also found that involving customers through outreach education and focus group dialogues was an important component of a consumer focussed peak energy reduction program.

James Fee GIS Blog: The World… She Be a Changing…

The speed at which technology flows these days still impresses me. It seems like just yesterday I was watching TV on a TV, reading books on paper and listening to music on something called a walkman. My son asked me what a modem was and how it worked with my iPhone. Clearly we are all in trouble.
- Brian Flood is correctly impressed with the World Resources Institute Reefs Map rendering 63,000 polygons with Google Fusion Tables faster than you can scream AXL.
- Take a look at the Atlas of New South Wales. I love how it is organized for actual people and not technologists. I suspect it will be used quite a bit by the good folks upside-down on the other side of the world. Take note, organize information by how people understand it to be, not by how you think it should be. I’m not as smart as I think I am and neither are you.
- The OpenLayers community has been sprinting in some neutral country in Europe. The main goal, only something where they get OpenLayers to support mobile devices better. Sounds like they have made some great progress.
- When you see an article with “Gov 2.0″ in the title you can but not help but cringe. That said the awesome that is TileMill is only to apparent to everyone. CSS is the future, stop using SLD everyone.
- Speaking of freaking amazing, how about this? Noncontiguous cartograms in OpenLayers and Polymaps ¹. OpenLayers + Polymaps ² is a winning combination. God bless Ian Turton for pushing a SLD/GeoServer example ³ in the comments.
- Do you use ArcGIS Server with OpenLayers? Thank the Azavea guys for making that happen.
- Lastly, lets all start putting the fork in the IT department and just name them “the help desk”. Why we hold on to such nonsense is beyond me. We are all IT staff tonight! ⁴

Well, we have decided to do a part two of this post with the news of Google Street View going into Israel. And, with all the upheaval happening in the world — from protests in Libya to all of the contentious budget dealings in Wisconsin — we thought today’s theme could be a double theme. We are facing some crazy times, and Google keeps breaking big time boundaries. Google Face Search to Use Social Network Photos
If you are out in public, you are fair game, but how would you like it if a stranger took your picture and then ran a search to find out your name, online aliases and all the information about you via that image? We are very nearly there with automatic face-recognition technology and social media aggregation. Although several companies are exploring that realm, Google recently published a patent in Europe to use facial recognition and social networking combined to give visual search results. Google Goggles is an image recognition search for mobile phones which allows curious users to take a picture of anything, such as a landmark, and then run a search for info on the item in question. A user does not need to type or speak to start the search; instead it’s as easy as opening the app, taking a photo and then waiting for the search results. Read the full Computerworld article here.

In a late-night vote that caught Wisconsin Assembly Democrats by surprise, Republicans pass Gov. Scott Walker’s plan, which would strip most government workers of collective-bargaining rights. The measure’s fate remains uncertain as Senate Democrats remain out of state to forestall a vote. The Wisconsin Assembly early Friday approved a measure to strip most government workers of collective-bargaining rights, but the measure’s fate remains in limbo with Democrats still out of state to prevent a vote in the state Senate. Shortly after 1 a.m., Assembly Republicans, who control the lower chamber, abruptly cut off debate after 60 solid hours of discussion and approved the bill, 51-17. Former Google Employee Launches First to Search for Hotel Rooms
Looking to find the perfect hotel room for your next holiday getaway or business trip? A Sunnyvale, California startup by the name of Room 77 — backed by some online travel vets with roots in Seattle — believes it has come up with a new way to pinpoint the best rooms at some of the top hotels in the country. “Why is it if I am going to spend seven nights at the Hyatt at Waikiki, that I don’t know until I get there whether I am going to end up in a good room or shitty room?” asks Room 77 Chairman Brad Gerstner, an online travel veteran who also sits on the board of Zillow. “What we have sought to do is build the world’s first room engine, and to index — not hotels in the way that Expedia and Orbitz and TripAdvisor do — but to index hotel rooms.” Read the full TechFlash post here.

I got taught the same lesson twice yesterday. By two different people, in two different industries (GIS and web), in two different situations.

The lesson: Ordinary people don't want or need to know how the stuff works. To take this further, many (most?) *prefer* not to know (if you can stomach that).

So instead of bombarding users/prospects/clients with all the tech that we are all excited about, *shield* them from it. Shroud the process in a little mystery, and make them comfortable that *you* will make it happen for them.

This is not a freshly released dataset, but we never mentioned it before: the MODIS 500-m global map of urban extent.

From the official site: "The goal of this project was generate a current, consistent, and seamless circa 2001-2002 map of urban, built-up and settled areas for the Earth’s land surface. This work builds on previous mapping efforts using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data at 1-km spatial resolution (Schneider et al., 2003; 2005), which was included as part of the MODIS Collection 4 (C4) Global Land Cover Product (Friedl et al., 2002). Here we addressed weaknesses in the first map as well as several limitations of contemporary global urban maps by developing a methodology that relies solely on newly released Collection 5 (C5) MODIS 500-m resolution data."

A Room with a View on Google Maps

Room 77

Room 77 can help you book the hotel room with the best view. Using some pretty smart algorithms Room 77 is able to show you the view from different hotel rooms using images captured from Google Earth.

Using Room 77 you can check out the views from rooms in hotels in a number of US cities and in London. To show you the view Room 77 calculates the latitude, longitude, altitude and orientation of the room and shows you the view as seen in Google Earth. User submitted photos are also shown where available.

Room 77 uses Google Maps with an overlay of the hotel to allow you to see the view from different rooms within each hotel. The overlays allow you to select different room numbers and even allow you to select different floors in each hotel.

Room 77 even has its own ranking system for hotel rooms based on your individual preferences for view, floor, distance from elevator and connecting rooms. Each room is then shown on the Google Map with a color-coded match percentage indicating: "strong match" (green), "fair match" (yellow) and "weak match" (red).

OpenLayers Team: Mobile Sprint: Day Four

Day four already!? Not sure what happened to day three (perhaps we all forgot to sleep). After picking off the easy wins at the start of the week, we’ve spent the past two days wrestling with some of the tougher issues that come up when you target a broad array of devices in an area of evolving technology.

OpenLayers prides itself on our solid support across a few generations of browsers from a variety of vendors. This week’s sprint brings us into the free-for-all world of mobile browsers. We now support intuitive touch dragging on iOS and Android devices. For browsers without full touch drag functionality, OpenLayers maps can be “tapped” to recenter.

Another nice usability feature in today is the ability to pan while drawing. Tomorrow, we’ll continue work towards allowing feature editing on mobile devices.

Much of the recent sprint activity has been going on in OpenLayers sandboxes. Tomorrow we’ll make a big push to get as much of this functionality into the trunk as we can. The pinch sandbox demonstrates the much anticipated smooth pinch zooming.

In addition we should have solid examples demonstrating OpenLayers in use with Sencha Touch and jQuery Mobile (note of caution: sandbox examples may be non-functional at any time and will be very slow to load as they use the debug version of the library). Also in the works are examples of local storage for vector features and raster tiles.

All of the new mobile related functionality will be available in the next release of OpenLayers. We hope to iron out remaining issues over the next few weeks and then start the release process for 2.11.

Cet article cherche à é valuer l’impact géographique de la révolution bolivarienne au Venezuela. Il confronte la rhétorique révolutionnaire à la réalité empirique en analysant les déséquilibres régionaux et des programmes socialistes mis en place dans l’état du Zulia tant dans des espaces ruraux qu'urbains. Sont utilisés les concepts de justice spatiale et de justice sociale pour essayer de comprendre dans quelle mesure cette nouvelle géographie socialiste contribue au développement du pays. En dépit des avancées de la révolution, le capitalisme de rente pétrolière hérité du 20^ème siècle perdure. Si l'on observe une meilleure intégration territoriale et sociale des habitants pauvres et des exclus, parfois plus symbolique que réelle, cela n’a pas vraiment induit pour autant une plus grande justice spatiale et sociale à leur égard. Ce constat est valable dans les limites de la définition de la justice retenue, pour le moment, et dans le cadre des espaces géographiques analysés.
