Here's the geospatial-related discussions that took place over Slashdot during the last 7 days. From my personal experience, there's often more value in the Slashdot user comments than in the news themselves, so don't hesitate to take a look at their user comments. Half of those stories from Slashdot are related to Google and location tracking.

Slashdot discussed a story about Marlinspike's Android Firewall that Constrain Location Tracking. The summary: "The first dynamic Android firewall, dubbed WhisperMonitor, has been released by respected security researcher Moxie Marlinspike. The firewall will allow users to stop location-tracking apps and restrict connection attempts by applications. Marlinspike, whose company created the application, designed WhisperMonitor in response to the incidence of location tracking and malware on Android platforms. It monitors all outbound connection attempts by applications and the operating system, and asks users to permit or block any URLs and port numbers that are accessed."

Another story discussed is named Google Sued For Tracking Users' Locations. The summary: "Two Android phone users are suing Google for $50 million in the wake of revelations that their phones might be tracking their locations. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on April 27, is seeking class-action status. The plaintiffs, Julie Brown and Kayla Molaski, are residents of Oakland County. The two say in the suit that Google's privacy policy did not say that the phones broadcast their location information. Further, they say Google knew that most users would not understand that the privacy policy would allow for Google to track users' locations." Apple was sued for their location tracking last week. According to Boy Genius Report, iOS tracking will be addressed in version 4.3.3, which is due out within a couple weeks.

Slashdot discussed a story named Google's South Korean Offices Raided, and the relation with geospatial is obvious in the summary: "The Seoul police raided Google's office in Seoul, S. Korea today on suspicion that they have illegally collected users' location data, without consent, for advertising purposes. Google claims to be cooperating with the investigation."

Now, not related to Google directly but still on the location tracking theme, Slashdot discussed a story named Battle Brews Over FBI's Warrantless GPS Tracking. The summary: "The FBI's use of GPS vehicle tracking devices is becoming a contentious privacy issue in the courts, with the Obama administration seeking Supreme Court approval for its use of the devices without a warrant, and a federal civil rights lawsuit targeting the Justice Department for tracking the movements of an Arab-American student. In the midst of this legal controversy, Threat Level decided to take a look at the inside of one of the devices, with the help of the teardown artists at iFixit."

Slashdot discussed a story named Cracker-Size Satellites To Launch With Endeavour, the summary: "Obfiscator writes with news of the upcoming deployment of satellite-on-a-chip devices measuring just 3.8cm x 3.8cm x 0.2cm. The satellites are set to launch with Endeavour on its final flight. "These three miniature satellites are being launched as a proof-of-concept. As such, they're being deployed in very low orbit, and should return to earth fairly quickly in order to avoid becoming dangers for other satellites. 'They each contain seven solar cells, a microprocessor, an antenna and amplifier, power storage in capacitors, and switching circuitry to turn on the microprocessor when the stored energy is enough to create a single radio-frequency emission.' Due to their size, atmospheric drag would slow them down without burning them up, allowing them to study the uppermost atmosphere of wherever they are deployed next: Venus, Titan, Europe, and Jupiter are all possibilities."

Here's another story on Crowdsourcing Radiation Monitoring In Japan. The summary: "A new open- and crowdsourced initiative to deploy more geiger counters all over Japan looks to be a go. Safecast, formerly RDTN.org, recently met and exceeded its $33,000 fund-raising goal on Kickstarter, which should help Safecast send between 100 and 600 geiger counters to the catastrophe-struck country. The data captured from the geiger counters will be fed into Safecast.org, which aggregates radiation readings from government, nonprofit, and other sources, as well as into Pachube, a global open-source network of sensors."

SharpGIS: Custom Cursors in Silverlight

There has been quite a few blog posts on how to create custom cursors in Silverlight, but I felt some of them were very limited or not very re-useable, or required you to put the cursor in the layout and put restrictions on your layout (like for instance requiring you to use a Canvas as parent for your cursor). So I ended up writing my own class for it that doesn’t have any of these restrictions.

The basic idea is the same as other approaches out there: You “disable” the cursor on your element by setting myElement.Cursor = Cursors.None. Next you move a custom UIElement around on top of your layout which represents your custom cursor. My approach uses a Popup, and therefore never requires you to modify your layout, and you can easily change the cursor on the fly. The cursor look is defined using a DataTemplate and can contain animations and so on.

All you need to do is define a DataTemplate and use the Attached Property to define the template. Below is an example of this working on a border element:

If you need to customize where the centering of the element is, simply apply a TranslateTranform to the element. Ie. if you want the above circle to center on the mouse location, add a TranslateTransform of –10,-10 to the ellipse.

Interactive Google Map using the Twitter API

Codrops has an interesting tutorial that shows you how to create a Google Map with the Twitter API.

The completed map uses the profile pictures of Twitter users as the map markers. The markers are displayed on the map using the Twitter API's geocoding service. If you click on a profile picture a custom designed information window opens displaying the last five Tweets of the selected person.

Также создана статья, описывающая процесс сборки TinyOWS в среде Windows при помощи Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. Google Earth Blog: Google Earth Outreach Grants

It's been nearly four years since the Google Earth Outreach initiative was introduced, and they've done some great things with it in that time including some excellent resources related to the gulf oil spill last year. Now they're looking to expand their reach, by offering grants worth up to $20,000 to non-profit organizations looking to turn their mapping ideas into reality.

The Google Lat Long Blog gives some examples of organizations that have been promoted via Google Earth Outreach, along with some information to get you started with the grants program. The important piece to note is that applications will only be accepted until May 26, so you have just a few weeks to get your information submitted.

You can apply on this page, but be sure your organization and ideas meet their eligibility criteria before you apply. The requirements aren't too tough, but may rule some organizations out.

SAR Working Group Started
The U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation has formed a commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar Satellite working group to advance space-based SAR. The Virginia organization also announced training at U.S. military’s Pacific Command. Japanese Government to Speed Up Issuing of Disaster Damage Certificates with Hitachi and TerraGo
Hitachi Solutions, Ltd., as part of its effort to assist in the reconstruction following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, has donated a TerraGo® GeoPDF® map atlas to the central Japanese government, disaster response headquarters and local governments. By utilizing TerraGo GeoPDF pre- and post-March 11 maps and imagery in residential damage assessment, clerical work of issuing disaster damage certificates can be dramatically simplified. GeoPDF maps are easy to both view and update from the field and can also be put to effective use in the planning for reconstruction efforts. Distribution of the GeoPDF maps to the disaster response headquarters and local governments in the affected Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures will be carried out by the Japanese Cabinet Office. Google Earth Blog: Quickly share locations using the Google Earth Plug-in

As most of you know, I started Google Earth Hacks around the same time that Frank started Google Earth Blog. While the blog now occupies much of my time, I still try to add new features over at GEH from time to time.

A few years back, I created a tool called EasyLatLon as a way to very quickly find the latitude/longitude for any location on earth. With the development work I do in Google Maps, quickly grabbing lat/lon for a specific location can be quite handy.

Over the past few weeks, I've been working to add more features to the tool to make it more useful for our users. In particular, you can now save any location with a single click, whether you're logged in or not. From there, if you're logged in, you can then submit it to the site to share with others in just a few clicks.

Here's a quick video showing how it works:

If you ever have a need to quickly grab the lat/lon for a location, or want to show someone a specific location in Google Earth, I hope this tool is useful for you. You can always find it at gearthhacks.com/easylatlon.

Chaque petit carré représente un million de personnes. La France compte 61 millions d’habitants, elle est donc représentée avec 61 carrés, ce qui permet de recréer plus ou moins sa forme originale.Mais regardez de plus près…

La carte du monde de la population

En fait, cette visualisation permet de mettre en relief certains extrêmes. Les pays énormes mais qui n’accueillent qu’une faible population, comme le Canada, la Russie ou l’Australie par exemple, sont à peine visible. Et puis des géants démographiques comme la Chine ou L’inde, sont plus que mis en avant.Même si ils ont un territoire déjà énorme, leur population l’est aussi, ils ne sont donc pas « effacé » sur cette carte du monde, au contraire.

Ce qui est intéressant, c’est qu’on se rend compte que certains pays qu’on attendait pas, son en fait très peuplés par rapport à la taille du pays. Ici, on remarque très bien le Nigéria, Le Bangladesh, Le Pakistan ou L’Indonésie, qui sont des pays dont on entend pas forcément beaucoup parler, mais qui ont pourtant une population gigantesque. L’Indonésie, c’est quatre fois la France et plus de 500 fois l’Islande, pays qui n’a même pas le droit à un seul carré sur cette carte!.

: Sextant - A JEE standard and interoperable Geoportal solution

IFREMER, the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, has just published online a new version of their georeferenced marine data portal, SEXTANT. Geomatys was responsible for a significant part of this, seeing that we took charge of the realization of the “Cart” and “Geoviewer” components, the global configuration of the platform, the personalization of the portal as well as the inter-portlet communication to the “Catalog” portlet, which was done by a different service provider.

This project is interesting in more than one respect, as it offered the occasion to implement different technical solutions developed by our teams and to integrate them into the Liferay portal solution, making it a true Geoportal solution.

Geoviewer : a cartographic visualizer as a portlet
The technological core:
LIferay is an enterprise portal solution developed in Java/JEE, respecting the standards laid down by the Java Community Process for developing portal solutions. The use of standards has allowed Liferay to set up a “Container Portlet”, a technical receptacle destined to host “portlets” or application components based on the JSR 286 standard. Furthermore, it defines a communication module which is also standardized (Inter-Portlet Communication), allowing the portlets to interact, even though they were developed in perfectly isolated contexts or using different technologies or languages. We shall see that these advantages were particularly valuable in the context of this project.

Yet, let us focus on the platform.

Apart from portlet execution, Liferay also offers an environment permitting fine-grained integration within an enterprise setup. This includes: communication with LDAP directories, integration into SSO, CAS and OpenID authentication solutions, as well as the possibility to compartmentalize the portal into regulated communities through user specific rights and roles, to name but a few. Liferay notably embeds a large quantity of portlets allowing the establishment of more classical content management solutions, shared calendar solutions and a whole array of utility applications.
The application components:
The challenge with the Sextant project was to develop several distinct application components, and to finely integrate them in a way as to develop an application not reflecting any heterogeneity. In this context, it was thus necessary to implement all of the advantages offered by the JSR 286 standard and to propose portlets featuring Javascript-rich interfaces built around a kernel written in Java and communicating via the IPC protocol.

For the past three years, the Geomatys teams have been developing MapFaces, a hybrid solution combining Java/JEE and Javascript with the objective of offering WebSIG clients that are perfectly integrated into a JEE environment. Our aim had long since been focused on the portal and its standards, and it is thus only natural that we used this cartographic framework to develop the two portlets that we were contracted to handle.

With MapFaces relying on the JSF presentation framework developed in JCP (JSR 314), it therefore has the capacity to handle portlet building and the ability to perfectly integrate with Liferay.

The “Geoviewer” portlet is the portal’s cartographic visualisation component. This tool allows you to visualise a large number of cartographic layers obtained from a multitude of WMS services. These services are provided by various solutions, such as Mapserver or Constellation-SDI, for the multidimensional information sources. This geovisualiser includes all of the classical functions of this type of tool, with the addition of its capacity to interrogate the multidimensional services, notably the Coriolis, Mars2D or Mars3D modules.

MapFaces was developed parallel to Constellation-SDI; we thus tried to propose a client module for each Web service provided by Constellation. The Geoviewer is consequently already capable to further interrogate the SensorWeb Based (SOS/SOS-T) data consulting Service, put in place to serve the in-situ information from the fixed and drifting floats managed by IFREMER. As for future prospects, chances are that the further development of Sextant could very well offer the possibility of consulting these information sources by means of additional components.

The “Cart” portlet is a data extraction module relying on a batch mode solution. The interface simply allows you to define data sets, to specify the spatial reference data output system, to draw a bounding box and to launch the command that will then execute the task. Once the extraction is finished, the user is informed by email of the availability of data layers on a remote FTP server. This module hooks up to existing extraction services within the institutes Information System, and, together with the other portlets of the project, adds interaction capacity.

Integrating the portlets:
This last section clearly illustrates the advantages of a portal solution developed in a multi service provider context. As stated in the beginning of this article, IFREMER has called upon two service providers to develop the portal components. The first was in charge of implementing the catalog and the client exploiting it, and the second, (Geomatys in this case), was in charge of the two above mentioned components, the integration of all the portlets in the Liferay portal as well as their communication and configuration.

For this project – with the “Catalog” portlet having been developed by a different service provider – technologies different to our own were used (in this case an OpenLayers and Jquery). We took the developments provided throughout the completion of the project which we then encapsulated into Java code in order to make the global configuration of the portal possible.

Finally, after having integrated the three business modules into Liferay, we worked towards making them communicate among themselves in IPC mode. It was therefore possible to let the components that had been developed with different technical solutions interact in order to get a seamless solution.

An example of the use of IPC in a heterogeneous portlet context

Here, the portlet solution fulfills a twofold role, seeing as it allows the components to communicate among themselves at a very fine granularity (an action on a button in portlet A can prompt an action on one of the components in portlet B). Furthermore, the rules for rights management provided on “portlet container” level are applied in a transparent way to all the portlets developed for that purpose.

Furthermore, this portlet concept together with the interaction capacity attributed by this standard opens up encouraging perspectives in functional modularity and enhancement for Web-SIG applications built in the form of Geoportals. It is important not to confuse them with certain practices implementing Iframes (there are also portlets encapsulating Iframes), because it would then be impossible to provide any direct interaction between the modules.

Within the scope of this project, the Liferay portal has also been enhanced to enable global and adaptive management of the cartographic configuration of each of the portlets, for all of the communities. It is possible to easily parameterize the initial extent of the cartographic contexts, the predefined zooms, the URL of the cartographic context file to be loaded in such and such portlet, the CS-W server URL for the “Catalogue” portlet and so forth. In short, each community (or “sub-portal” containing its own portlets) has the ability to use the same base modules, but configured in totally different ways.

Glow
Glow is an iPhone app that lets you share your feelings with the world and see how happy the people around you are.

The app uses Google Maps to let you view the happiness levels of those in your neighborhood. Alternatively you can zoom out the map view and see the happiness levels of the whole world. The map includes filters that enables users to view feelings by age and value, or limit the view to show only your feelings.

The app also includes an augmented reality view that allows you to use the camera view on the iPhone as a window on the emotional feelings of your location, superimposing the collected data on your current view.

Mappiness

Two academics at the London School of Economics are carrying out research into how the environment affects people's happiness. To help them gather the data for this research they have launched an iPhone app called mappiness.

If you download the app you will receive a notification between one and five times a day. The notification will ask you to open the app, briefly report how you're feeling and who you're with, where you are, and what you're doing. If you're outdoors and you're happy to, you'll be asked to take a photo of your surroundings as well.

You can also open the app and report on your feelings and situation, unprompted, as often as you like.

Anyone can keep an eye on the research being gathered by checking out the mappiness Google Map. The map shows the outdoor places where mappiness users have most recently reported feeling happy. If you click on an information window you can also view the photograph taken at that happy moment.

If charts and graphs are more your thing you can also check out the happiness meters and a graph of happiness levels charted over the past few days.

World of Emotions

World of Emotions are attempting to map the feelings of the world. To register their emotions users just click on a happy, sad or neutral face and their mood is added to a Google Map of the world.

It is possible to refine the results on the map by different emotions. Users can view the positive, negative or neutral emotions on the map or view results for the last hour, day, week or month. The site also provides a table that ranks the world's countries by their degree of happiness.

Letters from the SAL: GeoNet – Channel Extraction from LiDAR

This post is a summary of one of our graduate students, Terry Barrett, who did some excellent work getting GeoNet to run on a sizable (billions of points) LiDAR dataset.

GeoNet is an open-source Matlab code for stream-channel extraction of high resolution digital elevation data, developed by Passalacqua et al. at the National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics at the University of Minnesota. With the release of version 1.0.1 last September, the code has matured enough to be capable of adaptation to production use. One of our projects had need of stream-channel extraction for its one billion point, one meter resolution LiDAR DEM, and I was assigned the task of scaling up GeoNet and producing the stream-channel network for the study watershed.

GeoNet is designed to extract the channel network for a single watershed of maximum extent of about 2000x2000 elevation points, which it can do in a reasonable time (a few minutes) if the code is compiled. When I began using GeoNet v.1.0.1, there were no compiled versions offered for Windows operating systems, but I was able to compile it for both 32 and 64-bit using the C++ compiler included in Visual Studio 2010.

Development of the production code was done using a 3.75x3.75km subset of the watershed DEM, which produced a code that can: tile a geotiff raster into buffered tiles, sized for GeoNet; process those tiles through GeoNet to determine the channel network; trim the resulting channel-network shapefile tiles to the original tile dimensions; and connect the tiled-channel shapefiles with channels that conform to stream-flow logic.

The logic correctly connected the nearest independent channel ends for all locations except one, and the code was fast enough for the available time on the production machine, and so it was then used to run the entire watershed DEM.

Here is the output for the entire watershed (run in two halves, in parallel, on a 64-bit machine; runtime ~ 36 hours):

The connector channels:There are three reasons why the channel network has a few holes and doesn’t go to the edge of the DEM:1) GeoNet’s curvature calculation fails on tiles with more than about 20% missing data, which affected both the edge of the DEM and some interior areas with missing data.2) A few tiles crashed the Dinf mexfile (which calculates contributing area); I examined the tiles, and could find no significant differences between them and nearby tiles that did not crash.3) A few channel shapefile tiles (all lowland areas, possibly covered by water) crashed the connecting code; they were about 3X the size of the next largest files, and so generated overly-large connection matrices.

The project was successful, insofar as it produced an automatically generated shapefile network over most of the watershed, but there are areas for further improvement and development: 1) Prevent holes in the network – by debugging/improving the areas of code mentioned above; using a watershed DEM with a larger buffer (perhaps 2km instead of the 10m that the watershed DEM currently has); and/or performing the tiling with another program, such as ERDAS IMAGINE (I modified some share-code, geotiffwrite, to write the geotiff tiles; may still have some bugs).2) Validate and calibrate the channel network through comparison to networks generated by other methods (manual and automatic) and to ortho-photos of the watershed. Both GeoNet and my production code have a number of input parameters (all kept at default settings in the above analysis), and my preliminary investigations into the sensitivity of the channel network to changes in these parameters suggest that there is a lot of room for optimization.3) Further improve the connecting-channel logic – the subset DEM used for development still had one location where the logic produced an unnecessary connection channel (this location has overlapping independent channels on the stitching boundary), and there are areas where unnatural stream loops are created.4) The final step required to create a channel network most useful for further geoprocessing requires that the connection channels and the tile channels be merged into a single network of poly lines that properly conforms to sub-watershed regions. This may require “smart” tiling, with considerably more overlap (and processing time) than used by the current production method.
