Dans mon dernier billet j’annonçai la création de l'association MetaCarto dédié à le mise en scène de l'information.
MetaCarto a pour objet de :
- développer la connaissance et la pratique de la cartographie et la mise en scène de l’information,
- entreprendre et soutenir toutes initiatives permettant de développer la recherche dans ce domaine et favoriser l’échange entre ses membres,
- construire des liens avec les organisations homologues y compris à l’international.

Pour rappel la grande réunion de lancement aura lieu le 31 mai dans le cadre d'un Café Carto 2.0 qui nous donnera également l'occasion de réfléchir à "destroy your business".

Most of you know that Slashgeo.org is managed by a team of volunteers under the umbrella of a registered non-profit organization. We aim to provide great geonews aggregation and discussion services, from the geospatial community for the geospatial community. While making billions is clearly not a goal, it would still be nice if the site was self-sufficient. Over our past 5.5 years of existence, we always favored transparency. That's why we provide our open budget. Yes, we're in the red. If you like the site, any donation is welcomed, even if it's just 5$ to help pay for the hosting fees.

I'll now need to update our open budget and our list of Top Donors, found on the right hand side of the site... Data Blog: Toronto Open Data

Cities all across Canada are now giving open access to some pretty awesome GIS data that can easily be used in various projects and applications. Today for example, I was browsing through the Toronto Open Data Catalogue and wanted to use a couple of their data sets to whip up a quick listing in hopes of making this data even easier to download. I obtained the Bikeways data, City Wards, and Parks/Greenspaces as three separate downloads and applied some styling to the layers.

The Bikeways data proved to be much more than streets designated with cycling attributes. It is the City of Toronto’s Enhanced Centerline data, which includes all of the paths, streets, and highways in Toronto, while providing detailed information about the particular routes that are cyclist friendly. This information ranges from multi-use paths and bike lanes, to sharrows and suggested on-street routes. It is a great one-stop data set to have for anything cycling related in the city of Toronto.
As for the City Wards and Parks layers, these shapefiles provided visual aid in depicting which wards in Toronto had more bikeways than others and if greenspace played any role in the locations of the bikeways.
You can now speed up your work flow by downloading these data layers from one place – WeoGeo. Check out this listing and browse through the ‘Layers’ tab to choose the data you need, then select any customization options to complete your order.

Google Earth Blog: High-res imagery of the Mississippi River flooding

GeoEye has just released some brand new high-res imagery of the flooding that is happening near Cairo, Illinois, due to the rising Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

You can view it yourself using this KML file, or read more on the GeoEye blog.

Based on text in the KML file, the image was captured two days ago, on May 8. That's quick work to get it published so quickly! Fortunately for residents of the area, the river appears to have crested and should begin receding in the next 24 hours or so. Let's hope it does.

got geoint?: NGA Wants Analysts to ‘Use More of Their Bodies During the Analytic Process’

We came across a very interesting Wired ‘Danger Room’ story about how the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is looking for a software company to build a solution that would allow analysts to use their entire body during the analytic process — as opposed sitting in an office cube staring at a computer screen. Of course, Wired took some editorial license by saying the NGA analysts would be playing a form of ‘Dance ‘Dance at their desks, but the point is made very clear: analysts need to be fully immersed in the imagery they are seeing and sometime sitting at a desk just won’t cut it. Will this work? The NGA is not certain. It just wants ‘novel methods for interacting with overhead imagery.’ It will be very interesting to see what comes from this. And, hey, if Michelle Obama can get school kids to embrace exercise and movement each day, perhaps NGA anaysts will be playing ‘Dance Dance.” Read more here.

Le SIG à la Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux : partage de données et de symbologies autour d’une base Oracle pour les utilisateurs SIG et CAO-DAO par Marie Gitton, Chef de projet SIG, CUB – Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux, Sébastien Cart-Lamy, Chef de projet SIG, CUB – Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux et Gwenael Bachelot, Responsable technique Gamme Géospatiale, Autodesk France

Pour répondre aux différentes problématiques des agents de la CUB, la DSI permet d’utiliser différents logiciels SIG et CAO-DAO suivant leurs besoins, dont AutoCAD Map 3D.

L’ensemble des données géographiques issues de différentes applications (SIG et métiers) ont été centralisées dans un entrepôt de données « Espace Public », sous Oracle.

Les utilisateurs d’AutoCAD Map 3D, d’APIC, d’ArcGIS et du SIG Intranet/Extranet peuvent consulter ces données géographiques. Afin de conserver un environnement familier aux utilisateurs, ces données ont, dans la mesure du possible, une représentation similaire pour tous ces logiciels.

Pour les utilisateurs de logiciels CAO-DAO, la CUB a créé un développement complémentaire, encore en phase de prototype. Il permet l’accès à ces données SIG dans une zone définie, et d’appeler une couche avec sa représentation prédéfinie.

ArcGrid
The second example comes from the user list and concerns the use of ArcGrid data (an ASCII format). The user guide did not have any specific code examples as this format is supported out of the box by GridFormatFinder:

I did dive into the test cases and actually found a wealth of additional capabilities reading from an ImageInputStream, InputStream, smooth handling of gzip, or just reading from a URL.

Since the recent disaster at the Fukishima Nuclear Power Plant we have seen a number of Google Maps that show the location of nuclear power plants around the world.

For example Zeit-Online created the American Nuclear Power Plants Map to show how many Americans live near nuclear power plants. Another trend has been to create Google Maps that display radiation measurements.

Radiactivdad is a Google Map that displays the locations of Spain's nuclear power plants and also the results of radiation monitors in the country that have been connected to the web using Pachube.

Les standards d'interopérabilité sont aujourd'hui mis en œuvre dans divers contextes, et le passage d'une interopérabilité opérée par des acteurs humains à une interopérabilité opérée par des systèmes informatiques pose de nouveaux problèmes et nécessite de nouvelles réflexions. Cette session proposée par le groupe OGC de l'AFIGEO et le Forum français de l'OGC a pour objectif de proposer cette question à partir de trois retours d'expérience d'interopérabilité.

Ce tour d'horizon de quelques sites permet d'en tirer quelques enseignements :
- Plusieurs sites proposent des plans "figés" soit sous forme de PDF soit sous forme de scan du plan opposable intégré au SIG. C'est notamment le choix fait pour le PLU intercommunal du Grand Lyon. Ainsi la présentation en ligne est strictement conforme au plan opposable, y compris quant à son fond de plan cadastral. Une solution qui permet en quelque sorte de gérer la question de la non opposabilité, pour l'instant, de la version numérique des documents d'urbanisme.
- De plus en plus de sites proposent en même temps un service de renseignements d'urbanisme (information règlementaire sur la constructibilité d'une parcelle). Dans plusieurs cas, comme l'exemple de Cannes, l'application "RU" est distincte de la partie cartographique. Ce type de service permet aux collectivités d'alléger considérablement le travail d'information du public des services d'urbanisme. Il faut noter d'ailleurs que la mise à disposition du PLU dans une interface cartographique est souvent le seul service carto offert par les collectivités.
- Côté intercommunalités, les PLU sont généralement présentés par commune et non de manière continue.
- La majeure partie des plans n'intègrent pas les servitudes d'utilité publique, de compétence Etat, et encore difficilement superposable avec les données des POS et PLU pour cause d'échelles de numérisation différentes.
- Enfin, quelques sites permettent maintenant de consulter ces éléments sous forme de "webservices" c'est à dire des flux de données cartographiques que l'on peut rajouter à ses propres cartes. C'est encore rare mais c'est dans la perspective de nombreux services, dans une ferme volonté de s'inscrire dans les spécifications INSPIRE.
Ces services de visualisation des documents d'urbanisme répondent indéniablement à un besoin, des citoyens principalement. Mais ils peuvent également intéresser les professionnels. Ainsi, l'on trouve sur abonnement, un site privé qui propose les plans de zonage des communes d'ile de France.

The app is designed to be used from your phone and to be used when you are out and about. When you open the app on your phone it will detect your location and then use the foursquare API to display the nearest foursquare check-in deals on a Google Map.

Details of each venue offering deals nearby are displayed beneath the map. The app also displays the distance to each venue from your current location.

Jody Garnett: FOSS4G Presentations Feedback

Planning what presentations to go to at FOSS4G is always difficult; how much more difficultto go through the extended dance remix of all the submitted presentations?

In the past the selection committee has often provided guidance to the selection process based on the conference themes. This year they committee did provide guidance to those submitting:
- Case Studies (these are always popular; I find that reviewing the slides is good; but being there in peson for the Q&A session is usually the best part).
- Benchmarks (You hardly need to attend these; just have twitter open; once again the Q&A session is usually the best part. I sure wish they would include "setup time" as a benchmark.)
- Visualization (integration by eyeball - always a good choice)
- Development (hard pressed to attend these myself; BOF is where the development action happens)
- Hacks and Mashing (they should of just called this one "Fun")
- Open Data and Collaboration (this is a tough one; you can either end up with something fun, or get stuck listening to policy discussions)
In general I find advice of this nature to be helpful - it gets me thinking about what makes an successful conference.

Surprisingly all of guidance vanished when the public was asked to rate presentations.

The rating system consisted of (with a few additions by me):
- +2.0-means you are very interested in attending the presentation.
- +1.0-means you are somewhat interested in attending the presentation.
- +0.5-means you opened up the topic to see "more" detail
- +0.0-means you are not interested in the presentation.
- -0.5-means the opening sentence made you hunt around for a "less detail" button.
This is an amazing take on things; in particular the "filter" field; I would *love* to seea summary of what people filtered by! It did not always work for me; searching for "Jody" listed WPS Shootout, but not State of GeoTools.

A couple thoughts as I sift through the possibilities:
- I found so many interesting presentations; stuck behind awkward titles. Even if I wouldlike to go to these presentations; they would not make the conference a success (as peoplebrowsing the program during the conference will naturally skip over these).
- What I am interested in attending so *so* not what is needed for a successful conference. Watching five presentations on WPS; where each spends 5 mins explaining the background of what WPS is hardly counts. I sure wish there was a little organisation to the rooms; so an intro to the topic could be covered by the details/success/case studies by each team.
- There is a lot of pressure on this selection process; various project mailing lists have been asked to "vote for my proposal". This is really tough as often justifying attending the conference comes down to getting your proposal accepted.
- I love finding new projects in this list that I have not heard of!
- Interesting 52N submitting a presentation agains the "Open Geo-Stack". The company OpenGeohas an OpenGeo Suite; so either the hypen is in the wrong spot or we are going to have a bit ofmarketing trouble ahead. One down side to various stacks being constructed and branded is goingto be confusion like this. As a customer having a stack that is tested will be great; however itdoes place an increased communication burden on all those involved.
- Please don't being your description with "yet another XXX"
- Many of the talks I would like to see are boring; ie they are focused on the details and open my mind to possibilities. It is much more exciting to see SDI wrapped up and polished for use; but I got tired of that a while ago. That goes double for securing OGC services.
- Andrea is doing a great job of collaborating with members of the community that cannot make it to FOSS4G. Thanks Andrea!
- Note when submitting a bunch of talks (in the hopes of getting one through) you have a chanceof splitting your vote ... and not getting any in.
- I always confuse MapBuilder and MapBender
- It is a hard balance between presenting your company; and presenting your project. Alwaysfigured that is what renting a booth was about? (Or taking a BOF session out to dinner?)
- GeoREST? Interesting examples from Nanaimo and Vancouver (I suspect Nanaimo is a right ofpassage for any geospatial technology these days; kind of like the teapot for 3D graphics)
- Comparisons and gap analysis is always popular; I wish as much effort was spend filling in gaps.
- really nice to see a presentation on adoption that talks about risk right up front.
- A case study with "Getting the bugs out" in the title does not sound optimistic!
- A fair number of case studies on making the migration from ESRI only solutions; I always advocatemoderation (in terms of risk; not price) - but it is nice to see these presented as success stories
- It is really nice to see small business (and small municipalities?) targeted with presentations- this is a market I am never really in position to help. Perhaps the "stacks" mentioned abovewill allow them to invest in open source?
- Had never heard of "JackPine Geospatial Database Benchmark" before; wonder if they areallowed to publish Oracle results (or is it a case of run on your own hardware)
- Please be careful if you are presenting any comparisons (especially on "compliance"). Communicatewith the various communities (on their mailing list) before the conference. Even if it means addinga slide with "breaking news" at the last moment.
- A really large number of INSPIRE based presentations for a confernece in the states?
- A number of presentations on hydrology? Wish for a panel discussion instead.
- GeoScript for WPS? That would be cool - really wish ZooWPS would adopt GeoScript (or at leastcompare notes, or head to head comparison)
- There is a real difference between "dry" abstracts and those that sound fun or entertaining
- A lack of standards "basics" being covered; will need to remember to do a talk like that next year
- No tribes talk? That is the other nice general intro
- So MongoDB gets a DataStore for GeoServer? But GPL keeps it from being donated back to GeoTools (for use in GeoMajas, uDig, 52N etc...). Still very cool to see the NoSQL database options being integrated
- EduGIS gets it; a successful education outreach includes both software and leason plans
- TinyWFS - finally some choice for WFS-T
- So many security presentations; sure wish for a panel discussion
- The difference between describing a talk as cartography vs Map design, usability and interactionis the difference between night and day.
- Handy tip; only Java shops know the keywords "enterprise level" - everyone else just wants results. Still would be nice to see a Geomajas talk
- Almost any talk on JTS is going to be amazing although it is really hard to communicate that.There are always a couple of talks where "the development teams" go to listen at each FOSS4G. There is that classic moment where the rest of the conference asks "where did they go?".
- It would be great to talk to the OGC Schema guys; pushing JAXB way beyond its comfort zone
- In this context do we really need to say PostgreSQL/PostGIS?
- PostGIS 2.0 vs State of PostGIS?
- Sigh! FOSS4G will be great this year!
