Cartagen Warping Tool

The Google Maps API v3 has a great feature that lets you take and add your own Custom Street Views to Google Maps. Unfortunately it doesn't have a similar feature to add your own aerial imagery.

Step forward then Cartagen Warping Tool.

This tool allows you to upload your own aerial imagery and place it on top of Google Maps. The application includes tools that allow you to rotate and scale your images to fit the underlying map tiles.

In the unlikely event that you can't afford your own satellite you could always try and create aerial imagery with a kite or a remote controlled helicopter.

OK, the Google Maps API v3 actually does have a feature that allows you to add your own aerial imagery. You can use the Ground Overlay feature to place imagery on top of Google Maps. Using Ground Overlays though does mean that you will need to rotate and scale your own images.

Frank Warmerdam to become a Google guy

If you follow the osgeo planet blog aggregator, you may have noticed Frank Warmerdam’s recent blog post mentioning that he is off to work for Google. If I think back to the blog posts I have written, GDAL features in a great many of them – its a mainstay tool for me and barely a day goes buy that I don’t gdal_translate some file or what-have-you. Hell, I just finished running a batch job that ran for about 3 weeks comprised of nothing more than bash script and GDAL commands.

In QGIS too, GDAL is one of the key underpinnings of our project – it is only now 8 years or so into the project that we are starting to abstract the use of GDAL for reading rasters away a little to make space of other raster provider types. And of course OGR is one of the main ways that our users interact with vector data from within QGIS.

Personally, Frank has also been extremely helpful whenever I have wondered into the #gdal IRC channel looking for help. Reading his blog post made me think that Google doesn’t quite realise yet just how lucky they are to get him. If Google has any heart, they will make Frank a ‘minister without portfolio’ and just tell him to keep working on GDAL and enjoy the free food in their cafetarias. Here’s hoping at least that he still gets to spend a little time on the software that so many of use love using and depend on.

So in my small brain, I see Esri Java Server solutions as the only way to effectively and economically deploy and scale ArcGIS for Server in any hosted environment ¹. The idea that I’d scale any ArcGIS for Server on Windows in AWS is simply crazy talk. Because of this line of thinking, I’ve been watching for the “new” Esri Java Server products that hopefully are right around the corner. Well Esri has posted a “Java State of the Union” for everyone to read:

Esri’s ArcGIS and Java strategy is pervasive, in and through all of the key computing environments that Java is found in, from Mobility to the desktop and to the Enterprise. This makes Esri’s GIS and Java a perfect match for any Java-based implementation that requires the delivery of geospatial or location services and capabilities.

So it looks like Esri is continuing to invest in ArcGIS for Server Java and hopefully we’ll see it available on platforms other than RHE and SUSE ². Java still feels like an afterthought for much of Esri’s push, but at least we’ve got a dedicated team trying to get Server where it belongs.

OK, everyone together…. “Java…… in the Server…… Make me happy……. Make me feel fine. Java….. Make me warm all over…”

Today is Bike to Work Day so I thought I’d finally take a stab at biking in. I’m happy to report I made it sweaty safely to work.

More importantly, I thought I’d share an awesome site I’ve been using lately, RideWithGPS. A coworker recommended it and I’ve been really impressed. You can upload your tracks in multiple formats (kml, tcx, gpx) or trace your route on Google Maps. Word on the street is soon they’ll have even more options for base maps like OpenStreetMap and ArcGIS Online (or ArcGIS for the internets, or whatever …). You can also very easily embed maps like the one below.

Mapping APIs: Bringing Your Spatial Data into Bing, OpenLayers, and Google

A map is often used to display overlays conveying information to users. How you go about getting your data onto the map varies depending upon the mapping API. In this post we will explore how you can get your vector data on the map (points, lines and polygons) using the mapping APIs from Bing, Google, and OpenLayers.

I was inspired to write this post after recently building a demo where I worked with several mapping APIs. This post will talk about are the formats that are natively supported by three of these mapping APIs. However, it’s worth noting that you can get pretty much any web-based format onto a map by using FME Server – or by parsing the data, looping through it and using the mapping API’s standard calls to create geometry and add it to the map.

Bing

Native Formats Supported:
- SQL Server 2008
- SQL Azure
- GeoRSS
- KML
As you will see, GeoRSS and KML are standard across all platforms. The one that stands out with Bing is the ability to display data directly from your spatially enabled SQL Server 2008 database (available in both the Silverlight and Ajax frameworks). I have never actually used the SQL Server data connector so I would be interested to get some feedback from anyone that has. Having played around with the demo and having looked at the code, this looks like it would definitely be worth a look if you already have a SQL Server database setup and running.

Gotchas:
Overlaying the GeoRSS/KML is trivial with only a few lines of code. The problem I have is that Bing Maps gives every feature a pushpin icon irrespective of the type. For example, if you import a polygon it will put a push pin in the middle of the polygon and it is the same for the polyline. There is a workaround detailed here, but why not enable me to configure the visibility of the push pins through the API?

Pushpins which are auto-generated for every geometry type.

Gotchas:
The main thing which caught me out when using these services relates to the google.maps.KmlLayer (or GGeoXML in Maps v2.0) caching the data. For example, if you have a KML/GeoRSS file on the server and change the content, there is the potential that the changes will not be reflected in the client application. The way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to append a timestamp at the end of every request as a parameter.

The trouble is that the caching is there for a reason, so ideally you would only append the timestamp if you knew the data had changed. Easier said than done…

The other limitation of rendering using the google.maps.KmlLayer (or GGeoXML in Maps v2.0) is that the URL has to be public. There is however an alternative to using Google’s service, you can do it client-side. I have used this great little open source library from Lance Alan Dyas on several occasions to render my KML, and it works perfectly. It has the added advantage of giving you the freedom to step through and tweak the code which does the parsing; it also extends your format support to:
- GPX
- WFS
- GML
OpenLayers

As you would expect, OpenLayers is the king of format support. Here are the major formats that are supported (check the API for a full list):

Gotchas:
While the documentation and examples related to OpenLayers are excellent, I have found the community content to be not quite as extensive compared to Google/Bing. When I have a problem with Google/Bing, 9 times out of 10 I can find a solution on a forum somewhere. When working with OpenLayers I have hit several issues that have taken be a good amount of time to figure out. Having said that OpenLayers is a fantastic project, so give it a try – post your problem and contribute to the OpenLayers community.

got geoint?: Northrop Aims to Redefine ‘Persistent Surveillance’ with LEMV Airship

Just about a year ago we covered the news that Northrop Grumman won a $517 million Army contract to develop an unmanned combat-surveillance airship that is the size of a football field and can track enemy forces from more than 2,000 miles away. Well, in the past 12 months, Northrop has made some tremendous strides and its Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) airship is just about poised for flight. At the Paris Airshow 2011 this week, Alan Metzger, Northrop’s vice president and integrated program team leader of LEMV and airship programs, announced that the company had partially inflated the three-fabric bag that will help lift the airship — billed as being the largest airship built in a half-century — on a first flight later this year.

According to Defense News, the 300-foot LEMV is designed to loft a 2,500-pound payload up to 30,000 feet for three weeks at a time. In April, Northrop hits some major milestones with the carbon-fiber composite frame being just about largely complete. And in in May, the airship’s engines arrived for testing. The goal is to have the LEMV go from concept to actually flying in approximately 18 months — no small feat for sure.

GeoTools Team: GeoTools 2.7.2 Released

The GeoTools 2.7.2 release is now available on sourceforge for download:
If you are using maven GeoTools 2.7.2 is available from the OSGeo repository.
This is a bug fix release made in conjunction with GeoServer 2.1.1.
This is primarily a maintenance release focused on improving GeoTools 2.7 and is not devoted to new features. However a few call out to recognise some excellent work:
A long standing glitch in rendering line patterns was resolved; and GeoTools has been updated to work with PostGIS 2.0. Thanks Andrea and GeoSolutions for both of these fixes.

The World's Architecture on Google Maps

ArchMaps

ArchMaps is a Spanish language site that uses Google Maps and Street View to show the locations of great works of architecture.

ArchMaps has a very useful tagging system so that you can search for buildings by the name of the architect, by location, by date and by architectural style. Each building listed on ArchMaps can be viewed on Google Maps and, where available, can also be viewed in Street View.

World Architecture Map (WAM)

The World Architecture Map is a database of architectural information that uses Google Maps to show the locations of architectural interesting buildings around the world. It is possible to search for buildings on WAM by location, building type, architectural style or by tags.

Searching by location it is possible to view architectural maps for individual cities or by country. If you click on a building's map marker you can click through to a dedicated page about the building containing information, links and Flickr photographs.

Проект OpenAddresses был основан в Швейцарии в 2007 году (Institut Vermessung und Geoinformation), а в 2010 году официальный сайт стараниями небезызвестного Cédric Moullet серьезно обновился и продолжает активно развиваться. Отмечен наградой на симпозиуме AGIT 2010 в Зальцбурге (Австрия). В общем – успешный и известный проект. И большим удивлением было обнаружить, что в России он практически не известен. Поэтому срочно восполним возмутительный пробел!
OpenAddresses
Как и OpenStreetMap этот волонтерский проект ставит своей целью создание открытых данных – базы почтовых адресов по всему миру. Интерфейс очень простой – открываете карту, находите известные вам дома и ставите точку, заполняя анкету. Отметьте свой дом, десяток соседних и привлеките своих друзей. Никаких технических навыков по работе с GPS не требуется!

Любознательные могут посмотреть слайды с FOSS4G 2010 (pdf).

Теперь про желающих воспользоваться этим богатством. Можно воспользоваться REST-сервисом и загрузить базу адресов в формате CSV. Сделаем запрос на всю Россию (link) – итого 28634 записи, из них лишь 50 являются реальным адресами. Остальные, вероятно, импортированы из OpenStreetMap и содержат только номера домов.

Лицензия базы данных (CC BY-SA 2.0) аналогична применяемой в OSM и допускает коммерческое использование.
Примечание
Другие источники адресов по России:
- Яндекс.Карты – определенную информацию извлечь возможно, но требуется уточнить правой статус данных (предположительно, некоммерческое использование разрешено).
- Росреестр – портал госуслуг содержит огромную базу объектов с точными почтовыми адресами. Права на использование материалов не определены.

Google Earth Blog: Imagery from the Nabro Volcano eruption in Africa

10 days ago, the Nabro volcano in the northeast African nation of Eritrea erupted for the first time in recorded history following a series of earthquakes. The ash has since spread more than 60km over the Ethiopian border and the volcano has emitted the highest levels for sulfer dioxide gas ever detected from space.

NASA has been publishing a small stream of images from the volcano, including some stunning shots such as the one seen above. Even better, they happened to capture a photo of Nabro back in January of this year, providing a crystal clear shot of the volcano prior to the eruption.

You can view that image on NASA's site, or in Google Earth using this KML file.

The volcano has caused some minor disruption to air travel, but nothing on the scale of Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland last year. Even better, the level of ash coming out of the volcano has begun to diminish, as has the level of seismic activity in the region.

600 Free Google Map Markers

I rarely make a Google Map without using map markers from the Map Icons Collection. The collection has more than 600 free icons which you can use as map markers with the Google Maps API, which means you can nearly always find a marker that fits the purpose and design of your map.

The collection has previously been hosted on Google Projects but now has its very own website. With the new website comes two cool new features, styles and custom colors.

The custom colors feature allows you to change the color of any map marker to fit the style of your map and website. The style feature lets you choose from seven different style of marker, including iPhone, gradient and classic.

GeoSolutions is pleased to announce the ImageI/O-Ext 1.1.0 release. It replaces the 1.1-RC1 release (by also adding BSB and CADRG RPFTOC plugins through GDAL).
Changes with respect to 1.0.x series can be summarised as follows:
- Out-of-the-box Support for GDAL 1.7.3, which means no more patches are needed for GDAL Java bindings in order to access it from ImageI/O-Ext.
- BigTiff support, breaking the 4GB TIFF limit.
- EnhancedImageReadParam support. It extends the standard ImageReadParam by implementing Cloneable (used when supporting MultiThreading read operation) and a new DestinationRegion param to support oversampling/subsampling without specifying sourceSubSampling parameters. This may be used when dealing with readers which internally take care of performing subSampling/overSampling, such as the GDALImageReader
- Experimental multidimension plugin for reading spatiotemporal sources like:

Climate Hot Map

The Union of Concerned Scientists has created this Google Map to show the probable effects of global warming around the world. The map is accompanied by a Climate Hot Map Scavenger Hunt, which if you complete successfully gives you a chance to win a trip for two to the Rio Cachoeira Natural Reserve in Brazil.

The map explores the effect of climate change on people, the environment, the oceans, ecosystems and the temperature. You can select to explore any of these categories on the map using the menu at the bottom of the map.

[La Minute GeoRezo] Association GeoRezo : un nouveau président

A la suite de l'annonce publique de la démission du président de l'association, (voir ce sujet sur le forum ) et conformément à ses statuts, l'Association GeoRezo a procédé à la nomination d'un nouveau président lors d'une réunion exceptionnelle de son bureau le 19 Juin dernier. Yves Jacolin a été nommé président, jusqu'à la prochaine AG ordinaire de l'association, qui aura lieu courant octobre 2011.

Lors de cette réunion exceptionnelle du bureau, élargie momentanément à d'autres adhérents, le projet de candidater au CNIG a été maintenu.

La lettre de candidature sera donc adressée dans les prochains jours par le nouveau président. Nous pensons en effet qu'il pourrait être profitable pour l'ensemble des abonnés du forum, en tant qu'usagers, de voir certaines de leur préoccupations rapportées au CNIG. Dans le cas d'une acceptation de notre candidature, nous reviendrons vers vous afin de vous soumettre la liste des sujets à aborder et de vous communiquer les résultats des premières réunions.

L'association GeoRezo a fait face les jours passés à une situation inédite et très déstabilisante pour ses adhérents. Cette nomination rapide d'un nouveau président recueille l'assentiment de tous les bénévoles de l'association et permet de poursuivre les actions qu'ils mènent avec passion depuis déjà 12 ans.

Pieter De Graef: GIS (Geomajas) @ Jazoon conference

Currently in Zurich, the Jazoon conference is being held. Jazoon is Europe's premier Java and Open Source Developer Conference (I just copied the words here), and for once it's not all about new Java technologies, or big corporations doing their thing. No this time, we find an interesting topic about GIS among the many presentations.
The presentation is called "Mapping, GIS and geolocating data in Java" and is presented by Joachim van der Auwera (Geosparc). In this, I wish him the best of luck. May he spread the word of Open Source GIS.

What's more is that in preparation of this conference Joachim has written an article explaining the Geomajas framework. Since this is a good read for anyone interested in either GIS or Geomajas, I thought I'd share it: [blog.progs.be]

The Field Guide: Frank Warmerdam (Mr GDAL) Joining Google

Mr. GDAL himself is joining Google in Mountain View, California. See: [fwarmerdam.blogspot.com] .

Google is likely to allow Frank to remain active in GDAL/OGR and in OSGeo (on the board and other committees) while in their employment. So, it looks like GDAL will still be mentored by Mr GDAL (some Google time or Frank's personal time), which is good news indeed.

Also, Frank worked quite a bit over the last 6-months to solidify IMG and ECW support in GDAL. In the past some applications using GDAL created some non-standard IMG and AUX files, and most of these issues have been corrected in GDAL. Now it is up to the applications to make their corrections.

The ECW in GDAL work added support for ERDAS ECW/JP2 SDK 4.1 and 4.2 and added further control to end-users.
