Nous sommes sur le point de publier une nouvelle version de l'application France découverte. Depuis très longtemps, France découverte constitue notre vitrine, qui permet à tout internaute de découvrir toutes les possibilités offertes par une application construite à partir de la plateforme Géoclip Serveur.
France découverte n'est pas juste un exemple virtuel, mais une application complète, s'appuyant sur une base de données alimentée auprès des principaux producteurs de données statistiques publiques. France découverte propose en outre un outil de cartographie en ligne, permettant de cartographier n'importe quel jeu de données géoréférencées.

La nouvelle version de France découverte reprendra la quasi-totalité des fonctionnalités de la version actuelle, mais ira encore plus loin. Un des principaux atouts de la nouvelle plateforme est un considérable gain de puissance. Ainsi, un fond de carte comportant jusqu'à plus de 50 000 objets peut être intégré dans l'application. Cela permet par exemple l'affichage d'une carte de France par communes.

Ceci est rendu possible par le débit toujours croissant des connections internet, l'utilisation de la nouvelle technologie Flash/Flex et toujours plus d'optimisations de nos programmes.

Prodevelop: Google Summer of Code 2011: Final evaluation

After 4 months of work Google Summer of Code has finished. I'm really happy with the final results. Fernando finally finished all the tasks scheduled and the first tests I've made with the code he has written look promising. After all there's some work left for both of us. While he is going to contribute gvSIG Desktop with the GPX provider and some patches to the GPE library. I'm going to integrate all his work for the next release of gvSIG Mini, so it will be able to load local vector data; a great feature in my opinion.

All the documentation written during this summer can be found at the project wiki. The source code at the Subversion repository. And these are some preview snapshots of the project:

Regarding my own impressions about this summer I have to say I'm really satisfied with the experience. My personal motivation since the beginning was continue working for gvSIG Mini and try to join others to work also for it, so that goal has been fully acomplished. On the other hand, being a mentor there's also a path to learn. During this summer I've learned to teach others in topics that were unknown for them, to manage and track their tasks. I've learned also a bit of Kanban and of course I've coded a lot.

Apart from this, the very real motivation was to give my father the GSoC t-shirt :P

In the end a great experience I hope I could repeat following years.

One additional requirement that the INSPIRE Download Service specification adds to WFS 2.0 is a specific ExtendedCapabilities section. deegree 3 WFS configuration now has initial support for that — there’s a new option for specifying ExtendedCapabilities sections which are included literally in the GetCapabilities response. If you wonder why the example config has two different ExtendedCapabilities sections for WFS 1.1.0 and 2.0.0: Currently, the schema for inspire_ds:ExtendedCapabilities relies on OWS 1.0.0, because it was still made for WFS 1.1.0. In order to achieve a schema-valid GetCapabilities response for WFS 2.0.0, I decided to put it below an ows:ExtendedCapabilities element for now (which allows any content). This should be no longer needed onced INSPIRE Download Service Specification 3.0 sees the light of the day…

BTW: deegree 3 WMS and CSW configurations have a similar option to add the mandatory ExtendedCapabilities section for INSPIRE.

Ghostly Artists on Google Maps

The record label and art company Ghostly International has created a Ghostly International - Live Map so that you can follow all their currently performing artists.

The Live Map lets you select an individual artist from the map sidebar and view all their upcoming events on a Google Map. When you select an artist from the sidebar an information window opens with a brief bio of the selected artist.

You can click individual map markers on the map to find out what date the artist will appear at the chosen venue.

Pistachios, Turkey and TravelBing Maps Blog

What do pistachios, Turkey, and travel have in common? In a recent post on the New York Times’ Frugal Traveler blog, we learn that a city called Gaziantep located in southeastern Turkey is the self-proclaimed pistachio capital, and apparently a trip there is lovely and quite affordable.

While the blog itself is a good read, the New York Times needed an easy way for readers to visually follow the blogger on his 10-week Mediterranean adventure this summer. So they turned to Bing Maps.

Using Bing Maps developer tools, the New York Times created a mapping feature that shows the blogger’s current location, where he had been, and where he was going. Readers just click to navigate between locations, easily moving between blog posts and traveling the Mediterranean vicariously through the Frugal Traveler.

And we all know that the big three holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day) all carry tremendous meaning for our great nation. We honor our fallen heroes, celebrate the birth of our nation and celebrate labor in America. This week’s FFFT post is all about Labor Day and the good old-fashioned American work ethic. Hail the American Work Ethic

While Americans don’t get the luxury of one month off in the summer time — like many Europeans — we have one of the strongest work ethics in the world and have achieved great heights as a result. Many dream of winning the lottery and quitting their jobs, or perhaps retire early. Though, the reality is that being in a state of non-work, even if you have a fat bank account, creates an overall feeling of malaise. Working is good for us and Americans know this all too well. Why Work is Good for You!

If you dread Mondays and would rather be hiding in bed, you might be surprised to learn that working could actually be good for your health. New research shows people who work past retirement age are healthier than those who give up their job. A study found that almost three-quarters of working women aged 55 to 75 described their health as good, compared with less than half of those who had retired. The research, carried out by the UK Government’s Department of Work and Pensions, also revealed that working men of the same age were healthier than those who had stopped work.

Users of this site will remember that "locationgate" affected most modern smartphones OS. A new episode is discussed over Slashdot in a story named Lawsuit Claims Windows Phone 7 Spies On Users.

Their summary: "Microsoft wants to emulate the success of the iPhone, but they probably didn't want to follow in Apple's footsteps this way: a class action lawsuit claims that Windows Phone 7 is collecting location data on users, even when they request that it stop. But a look at the internals shows that Microsoft might not be acting as Big Brother-ish as it appears."

Measuring distances with the Google Earth RulerGoogle Earth Blog

The "ruler" tool in Google Earth has always been useful, and it has seen a number of improvements over the years. To get started with it, simply go to [Tools] --> [Ruler] in Google Earth and it'll open up for you in a small window.

Here are a few things you can do with it:

Measure the length of a field

To measure the length of a field (or driveway, or any other straight line), simply use the "line" feature in the ruler. Choose your unit of measure (inches, meters, miles, etc) and then click the two points on the ground you'd like to measure. That's it -- it's very easy!

Measure a running/biking route

I have a GPS-enabled watch that can track how far I run, which is quite cool. However, I usually want to know how far my route is before I head out, and the Ruler's "path" tool is great for that. By choosing the path, and then clicking various points along my route, I can see how far it'll be. As long as you plot your points carefully, it will be remarkably accurate. I also change the setting to "miles" for this one, since that's how I typically measure my runs. This would also work well for biking, hiking, or just walking. You could potentially use it to measure driving distance, though the standard "directions" feature would work better in most of those cases.

Save and edit your path

Once you've created your path, you might want to save it for future reference. Simply click the "save" button in the Ruler's window and it will save the path to your "Temporary Places" folder. You can edit the path in the future by right-clicking on the item from within your "places" panel and choosing "properties".

Get an elevation profile

One of the great new features unveiled in Google Earth 5.2 last year was "Elevation Profiles". This allows you to quickly see the elevation changes over a particular area. If you save your path in Google Earth, you can view the elevation profile for it very easily. Right-click on the item you saved in your "places" panel and choose "Show Elevation Profile".

In this example, we'll hike up Kennesaw mountain, and then follow the service road to get back down. You can see that the elevation profile shows the steep ascent, followed by the more gradual descent on the way back down.

The Ruler tool in Google Earth can be quite useful, so head into [Tools] --> [Ruler] to try it for yourself!

Record low Arctic sea ice volume projectedBetween the Poles

The extent of Arctic sea ice is one of the most accessible sources of data showing the effect of global climate change. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) began monitoring Arctic sea ice extents in 1978 using passive microwave satellites at a resolution of 25 km. September 2007 was the lowest summer Arctic sea ice extent observed since NSIDC began monitoring and recording sea ice extents in 1978.

This year according to the NSIDC Arctic sea ice extent is below the 1979 to 2000 average and above the extent for 2007. The southern route of the Northwest Passage is free of sea ice according to imagery from the University of Bremen and the NSIDC Multisensor Analyzed Sea Ice Extent (MASIE) analyses.

Data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer – Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sensor, processed by the University of Bremen, show ice tracking near 2007 levels. The AMSR-E instrument has higher resolution (6.25 km) than the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F17 Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) with 25 km resolution.

Ice volume

Estimating ice volume requires a computer model. The University of Washington's Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) model combines data on sea ice concentration with models of ocean and atmospheric conditions to estimate total ice volume. Estimates generated by the model suggest that ice volume is not only well below the 1979 to 2010 average, but below the volume for 2007. The PIOMAS model forecasts that this year's minimum volume in the next month will be below 2007 and could even reach a record low volume.

Another positive step toward the Australian Gov 2.0 agenda will be the launch of the Open Technology Foundation on Wed 14 September 2011.

The Open Technology Foundation (OTF) is an authoritative peak body for the Australian and New Zealand public sector focused on advancing the uptake of open technologies in Government.
My understanding of the goals of the OTF is that they wish to provide support services to government agencies in deploying open source and standards based systems.

New 45° Imagery for 24 cities

Those helpful folks at the UK Ordnance Survey have provided a fine reference Guide to Coordinate Systems in Great Britain. It's well worth reading if you're interested in the intricacies of coordinate systems, datums, surveying and GPS. It's a bit technical, but if you can handle coding in Javascript you can probably get something out of it...

An interesting extract gives the general flavour:
- The WGS84 Cartesian axes and ellipsoid are geocentric; that is, their origin is the centre of mass of the whole Earth including oceans and atmosphere.
- The scale of the axes is that of the local Earth frame, in the sense of the relativistic theory of gravitation.
- Their orientation (that is, the directions of the axes, and hence the orientation of the ellipsoid equator and prime meridian of zero longitude) coincided with the equator and prime meridian of the Bureau Internationale de l’Heure at the moment in time 1984.0 (that is, midnight on New Year’s Eve 1983).
- Since 1984.0, the orientation of the axes and ellipsoid has changed such that the average motion of the crustal plates relative to the ellipsoid is zero. This ensures that the Z-axis of the WGS84 datum coincides with the International Reference Pole, and that the prime meridian of the ellipsoid (that is, the plane containing the Z and X Cartesian axes) coincides with the International Reference Meridian.
- The shape and size of the WGS84 biaxial ellipsoid is defined by the semi-major axis length a 6378137.0 metres, and the reciprocal of flattening 1/f 298.257223563. This ellipsoid is the same shape and size as the GRS80 ellipsoid.
- Conventional values are also adopted for the standard angular velocity of the Earth, and for the Earth gravitational constant. The first is needed for time measurement, and the second to define the scale of the system in a relativistic sense.
Now then, if you find yourself getting lost on the way from Foyle's to the nearest Lyon's tea shop, you can't say you haven't been warned!
