Les outils de zoom dans ArcMap

La barre d'outils des outils dans ArcMap, possède de nombreux outils impliquant le zoom.
Cette barre d’outils peut être déplacée dans l’interface de travail à un endroit qui conviendrait pour une meilleure ergonomie de travail.

Ainsi le Zoom In (Zoom Avant) se présente avec le signe plus dans la loupe et Zoom Out (Zoom Arrière) avec le signe moins.

Une fois cliqué sur le bouton Zoom In ou Zoom Out, vous n’avez qu’à cliquer (par simple clic gauche) dans la vue des données pour voir l’effet escompté.

Comment ouvrir une carte dans ArcGIS

L'affichage des cartes et des données dans les fichiers géographiques (comme les fichiers shapefile (.shp) ou geodatabase(.gdb)) dans la suite ArcGIS Desktop, s'effectuent dans ArcMap.

Au démarrage de l'application ArcMap, une boite de dialogue vous invite à démarrer ArcMap avec :

1 - Une nouvelle carte vide (A new empty map). Dans cette option, les cadres de la Vue et la table des couches sont vides, à vous d'ajouter vos données grâce au bouton Add Data dans la barre d’outils standard.

Technological acceleration: Chrome and Android marketshare increasingBetween the Poles

I blogged earlier about the acceleration in the rate of technology adoption. Statistics released recently show rapid changes in market share in smart phones and browsers.

Smartphones

In the US 84.5 million people own smartphones. According to ComScore, Android's marketshare of the US smartphone market for the three month period ending August, 2011 leads its nearest competitor by a considerable and increasing margin.
1. Android - 43.7 % (up from 38.1 % in the previous 3-month period)
2. iOS - 27.3 % (26.6 %)
3. Blackberry OS - 19.7% (24.7 %)
4. Windows Mobile/Phone 7 - 5.7 %
5. Symbian - 1.8 %
It wasn't that long ago that iOS was the clear market leader. And it wasn't that long before that that Blackberry OS dominated the smart phone market.

Browsers

According to StatCounter, Chrome’s share of the global market for August is about 23.6%, somewhat behind Firefox. Internet Explorer at 41.7% is still the dominant player in the market, but appears to be losing marketshare rapidly.

Since the beginning of 2011, Chrome increased its marketshare by 8%. Firefox's share has decreased by 4% and IE's share has decreased by 9%.

It wasn;t that long ago that IE had over 90% of the browser market. Chrome was only introduced in December, 2008 and already is approaching owning a quarter of the market.

- Google proudly announced there has been over one billion downloads of Google Earth, clearly Google Earth and Maps were the symbols of a new era in geospatial technologies

Comment créer un fichier shapefile - Partie 1

L'une des premières applications à être utilisée dans ArcGIS, est ArcCatalog. D'abord, pour créer les fichiers dont vous avez besoin et les organiser mais aussi pour les prévisualiser dans leurs formes graphiques ou tabulaires. Par ailleurs c’est dans cette application qu’on édite les métadonnées d’un fichier de données géographiques, ce qui fait l’objet d’un article plus loin.

Sanjiv Ahuja talked to C-SPAN on September 29, 2011 about LightSquared's work to build a $14 billion high-speed wireless network across the US, interfering with precision GPS use. It will be satellite based and will improve networking capacity across the USA, yet the network will interfere with some of the spectrum used by global positioning system (GPS) equipment.

LightSquared obtained the spectrum from their predecessor companies purchases, who purchased the spectrum decades ago. American Mobile Satellite Corporation, Mobile Satellite Ventures, and Skyterra preceded LightSquared.

I believe you can skip the first 5:29 to hear Sanjiv talk about the GPS conflict. Mr Ahuja has been well coached in presenting his case and staying on message. (I do not use the term 'coached' in a negative way. I believe all CEOs of large companies should be coached.)

Sanjiv is selling how LightSquared will help people, how LightSquared is the underdog, how LightSquared will bring new jobs, how LightSquared will save people money, how LightSquared will help the students. He even discusses how LightSquared will help the video gaming industry. Sounds like a political campaign strategy, get as many people to connect with your piont of view as possible. :)

Cecilia Kang (Washington Post, Technology Policy Reporter) starts QA at 13:30. She does a pretty good job. She asks him to discuss claims of competitors linking up with political powers to stop LightSquared starting at 47:00.

Google Maps of Sacramento & Frisco's Trees

I've been spending a bit of time today checking out the website of Azavea, the developers behind some really great Google Maps applications, such as Walkshed and CommonSpace.

Azavea has also open sourced a cool platform called OpenTreeMap. OpenTreeMap provides an easy-to-use public inventorying platform that enables individuals, organizations, and governments to collaboratively contribute to a Google Map (or other mapping platform) of a community’s tree population.

You can see the platform in operation in Urban Forest Map, a Google Map of San Francisco's trees. The platform is also being used by Greenprint Maps to map the trees of Sacramento.

GeoTools Team: GeoTools 8.0-M2 Released

The GeoTools 8.0-M1 release is now available on sourceforge for download:
If you are using maven GeoTools 8.0-M2 is available from the OSGeo repository. This is a milestone build made conjunction with uDig 1.2.3.

There are lots of exciting improvements (see the release notes below for the complete list).

Micheal Bedward has been putting an amazing amount of work into the gt-swing module. The visible change is cleaning up the use of MapContent, MapViewport and the new Layer classes. The example code used in the documentation has been updated to reflect the changes to gt-swing.

There are many more improvements under hood for the gt-swing module as the internals have been refactored to be nice and clean, easy to follow and most importantly testable. This last point really reflects the hard work and dedication involved as gt-swing is groomed to meet the QA guidelines required to be included in the library proper.

Maurcio has found time to update the Contextual Query Language (CQL) to leverage the the new temporal filter support that has been added to support WFS 2.0.

Andrea has been very busy supporting the gt-renderer module (in particular to enable the work in gt-swing). He has also found time to work on a couple amazing new features - the most popular of which is a new StyleBuilder allowing the definition of an SLD style in a few lines of code.

Jody got a little bit of time to work on the process support for this release. The big change is support for annotation based process definition (with a tutorial created during the FOSS4G code sprint so you can easily define your own processes). The process implementations have been have been split into gt-process-raster, gt-process-feature and gt-process geometry and received a huge influx of high quality implementations from the GeoServer project. This results in fifty processes being available out of the box.

Finally this release makes use of JTS 1.12 with the wonderful improvement of equalsExact, equalsTopo and equalsNorm as described in our docs. This change really improves the usability of Geometry for the JTS library and reduces frustration for new users.

The following change proposals have been accepted for GeoTools 8.0:
- Java 6 - yes! Thanks to Christian Mueller for updating the build instructions for this one. Special thanks to Andrea for updating the image rendering tests to account for different font metrics between Java 5 and Java 6.
- Allow Build with Maven 2 or Maven 3 - Congrats to Cliff for his first change proposal - and Andrea and Ben for doing the work!
- Temporal Filter Support - another great bit of work from Justin (a stepping stone for WFS 2.0)
- Detailed information about Function arguments and Return Type - thanks to Justin and Jody for sorting out the use of Parameters and filling in the information for the existing functions. This is a key improvement which will make the library and style creation much easier to use.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has responded to a request under the Freedom of Information Act, filed on September 6 by GPS World magazine, saying it cannot or will not release documents prepared by other government agencies, outlining the operational and economic impacts of a LightSquared terrestrial signal on GPS services. GPS World has talked with two independent sources who confirm that the U.S. Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Agriculture, Interior, Transportation, and two other agencies wrote such letters to the NTIA in the June-July 2011 timeframe, in response to a federal tasking by the National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing.

Mouvements résidentiels dans le département de la Vienne

Voilà un exercice intéressant car il permet de repérer les axes et les points structurants d'un territoire.

En effet, habiter quelque part n'est pas neutre... Entre ce qu'on veut, ce qu'on peut, ce qui est disponible, la situation préexistante... les évolutions du peuplement sont un miroir fidèle des dynamiques territoriales.

Pourquoi la Vienne ? Parce que j'y ai quelques contacts et/ou opportunités en ce moment... C'est donc l'occasion d'en savoir un peu plus sur ce département que je ne connais pas très bien. C'est aussi un département assez classique au centre de la France. Des cartes de l'Indre-et-Loire, du Cher, du Loir-et-Cher... présenteraient des similitudes, sans aucun doute. Enfin, c'est un modèle de carte que j'aime bien : Parlant & efficace.

Résultats ?
1. L'A10 ressort très bien. Certes, on ne la voit pas mais on la devine...Elle arrive au Nord, contourne Châtellerault puis Poitiers, avant de filer au Sud-Ouest. Dans un rayon d'environ 30 km autour de son tracé, les dynamiques démographiques sont bonnes à très bonnes. Il y a sans doute des opportunités à saisir et des pépites à exploiter.
2. Les mouvements de périurbanisation s'observent très nettement, en particulier sur les pôles de Poitiers et Châtellerault. Mises à part quelques exceptions, les ville-centre se dégonflent au profit des communes péri-urbaines, et ce, dans un rayon de 10 à 20 km. Au Nord et à l'Ouest de Poitiers en particulier, on observe un dynamisme notable. Votre activité a suivi le mouvement ? Et votre réseau de distribution ?
3. La tendance est à la concentration : les pôles secondaires et leurs hinterlands ruraux souffrent. Je parie que les activités de services à la personnes progressent dans ces territoires ! Sinon, il y a des parts de marché à prendre.

One other fun post comes from Google's Mike Pegg, who posted a list of his favorite things about Google Earth. Some of it is duplicated above, but he mentions some other useful tools like the 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator.

Historical Photos of Philly on Google Maps

PhillyHistory.org provides access to the incredible collection of historic photos of Philadelphia held by the City of Philadelphia, Department of Records.

Users of the site can search for photos based on geographic location, subject matter, or date. The location of the view depicted in individual photos is marked for reference on an interactive map. Whilst the map itself doesn't use the Google Maps API PhillyHistory.org does make great use of Google Maps Street View.

When you select an historical photograph there is the option to see the same view portrayed in the picture using Google Maps Street View (where available). This provides a great way to see how Philadelphia has changed over the years.

Mexican Crime on Google Maps

Infomap is a Google Map of user reported incidents in Oaxaca, Mexico. Users of the map can report incidents of crime, traffic accidents and delays, fires or any other incidents they wish to share.

Incidents are reported by users via a short form. As well as appearing on the map the incidents can be shared through social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The map can be queried by type of incident and by date.

Why I love Ruby on RailsMy Corner of the Web

OK, so I have been working with Rails for a few months now. I have a long ways to go yet but I am getting a pretty good grip on things. As of yet I do NOT have a live app out there to share but I am working on an app of my own and collaborating on a couple of other apps. I have a lot better understanding than I have knowledge but I am working on that.

Why do I love Rails? First off, the Ruby on Rails community in Phoenix is rock solid. The Ruby::AZ group is fantastic here in Phoenix. Every month there is a pretty good turn out and always plenty of people volunteering to present. Another fantastic group in Phoenix is the Phoenix Night Owls where there are plenty of people to help you out on your projects. I have said this before and I will say it again, the Ruby on Rails community is so supportive and it amazes me how many Rails developers are willing to help you learn and willing to take the time to teach you. I have been fortunate to meet the guys at RebelHold who have taken me under their wing to teach me better practices in Rails development. What is great about these guys is that they FORCE me to become a better coder. I have learned so much from @m3talsmith and @fzf in just a few months.

What have I learned? Well I must say that I think NOSQL is the way to go. Preferably mongoDB. Just today I went thru the Hell of installing postgresql. What a pain in the ASS. With mongoDB there is no migrating to add a field. There is just an easy install of mongoDB. Want to add a field to a table? Put in the model. I can say that I didn’t have that hard of a time with sqlite3 but still I think mongodb is the way to go. Afraid that mongodb cannot handle large amounts of data? Just a few small companies like Disney, craigslist, and foursquare. It is not like those guys have a lot of data.

What else do I like to use? I have recently started to use Omniauth for registering as a user on my app. Devise (sorry @m3talsmith) for authentication when not using Omniauth. RVM is a definite must for version control. Where do I go to learn? I would hate myself if I were to forget to mention Railscasts.com and the man behind Railscasts @rbates who amazes me that he not only has the time but also takes the time to record awesome Rails tutorials EVERY week! And they are free to watch. Another example of the greatness of the Rails community.

BDD. I have totally gotten into the world of Behavior Driven Development. In fact this month I am giving a presentation on BDD and Rspec / capaybara. I now know that “if you are not testing your rails app, you are not developing, you are guessing.” Take the time to learn how to write and use request specs. It takes longer up front but saves time in the long run. Learn to write stories in pivotal tracker and transpose those to your tests. You will learn a lot more by testing and write less and cleaner code.

Another thing I was forced into (LOL) was NOT using scaffolding. Since I stopped using scaffolding I write more code but I understand what I write better. While I might be actually typing more code, in the end I have fewer lines of code.

I will add my BDD/Capybara presentation on here after I have it finished. I will also start blogging more about my experiences with BDD and show some code in the near future.

GITA PNW: Standardizing as-built data management for municipal governmentsBetween the Poles

Last year about this time I blogged about the Master Municipal Construction Documents Association (MMCDA) which maintains a set of templates for tendering and contract administration for municipal infrastructure projects that is geared toward government, consultants, contractors, and owners. The documents are appropriate for municipal works projects, both underground and street level, and have been widely adopted in British Columbia. The MMCD have been specifically designed for use in projects that can be characterized as municipal works (underground to street level), involving unit prices for the majority of tender items, and where the laws of British Columbia apply.
The documents include MMCD Templates for AutoCad Civil 3D for construction and record drawings that provide a common CAD standard that is is expected to enable comparability and consistency of presentation across the province. The Civil 3D template project is focused on "internal drawing structure, external drawing presentation, and post construction GIS submissions".

Standarding Asset Data Management

At the GITA PNW conference this week Andrew Walther and Jonathan McIntyre outlined a new MMCDA project, the Asset Management Data Repository (AMDR) project, that is intended to assist local governments in meeting the requirements of PSAB 3150 (similar to GASB 34 in the US) by defining a standard data model and a process for managing as-builts from engineering design to records management.

Under PSAB 3150 municipalities are required to manage infrastructure assets under a set of standard accounting rules. For most municipalities, existing infrastructure records are incomplete, out of date, and often not accounted for financially, according to accounting standards. As a result of PSAB 3150, municipalities are actively engaging in developing an accurate and uptodate record of assets.

The AMDR project is designed to assist local governments in BC to adopt a standard approach for asset management including as-builts.
- Identify attributes required for financial management, condition assessment, performance monitoring, risk management and demand management, as well as replacement and renewal decision support
- Define a data model for a standardized asset management relational database, so that it can be utilized by a variety of software vendors and local governments in implementing product development and strategic information plans
- Identify best practices for the collection of infrastructure data
- Conduct a risk assessment for local government assets using BC Emergency Planning templates
- Recommend standards and processes for post construction record submissions
- Produce standardized reports, aggregated at the local, regional and provincial level, based on agencies subscribing to a standard asset management register
