Searching for a Home with Natural Light
sur Google Maps Mania
RealScout is an interesting new San Francisco real-estate search engine that allows you to search for properties by a number of characteristics, such as properties with large backyards, lots of natural light or in need of refurbishment.
Like most property search engines RealScout allows you to search for properties by price, location and number of bedrooms / bathrooms. However RealScout also allows you to add a number of other requirements that are important in your property search.
For example, you can add a requirement to your search to only show properties that have hardwood floors, have a luxury bathroom and a gourmet kitchen. All the results of your search are displayed on a Google Map. The map includes your category search requirements as selectable tags so you can refine your search simply by deleting a tag or selecting another category from the drop-down menu. -

Banish the Monday Blues with Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
Why not start the week than with a little geography guessing game.
GeoGuessr is a Street View geography quiz that sets you the challenge of guessing the locations of a series of random Street View images. Using visual clues, such as the fauna, landscape and street furniture you have to place a pin on a global Google Map indicating where you think each Street View image was taken.
The closer your guess to the actual location then the more points you win.
Locatestreet is a very similar game that presents a series of random Street Views and the player has to guess the country where the image was captured.
The featured terrain, architecture, street furniture and modes of transport all provide clues that can help the player guess the country of origin of the random Street View image. The game also includes three clues for each image, but be warned - if you use a clue you will win less points.

The Google Maps of the Week
sur Google Maps Mania
Over the last couple of weeks Street View Hyperlapse has rightly received a lot of praise. The app uses Hyperlapse.js, Three.js, GSVPano.js, and the Google Maps API to create really smooth animated Street View movies.
Users of Street View Hyperlapse can search for any location that has Google Street View coverage and create their own animated movie. All you need to do is drop two map markers on a map to show the start and end of your drive and then press 'create'. The result is a really smooth animated drive using Google Maps Street View.
Pick Me Up - Cartograph is another very impressive use of Street View.
Created for this year's graphic arts festival 'Pick Me Up 2013' Cartograph uses Google Maps Street View to take the exhibition outside the confines of the gallery in Somerset House and into augmented digital locations around London.
Locations around London have been chosen by the artists for their relevance to the artwork and then the art has been superimposed over those locations in Street View.
Another map that has received a lot of praise this week is SF Live Bus. SF Live Bus is a live animated map that shows the location of all the buses on San Francisco's Muni network in real-time. Just load up the app and sit back and watch the Muni buses as they travel around the city on the map.
If you like real-time mapped transit visualisations then you should also have a look at One Map, One Week in Public Transit. In this Google Map Vasile Cotovanu uses his popular vehicle simulator to present a simulated real-time map of Geneva's TPG tram network. -

Mapping the Boston Marathon Bombings
sur Google Maps Mania
It is surprising how few news stories are illustrated with online maps. This week's tragic bombing at the end of the Boston Marathon and the ensuing hunt for the suspects proved however to be a notable exception.
The New York Times went with a static 'bird's eye' aerial view of Boylston St in Boston to show the location of the two bomb explosions and the marathon finishing line. Whilst most other online news sites opted for annotated maps of the scene the Times' Site of the Explosions at the Boston Marathon aerial photograph, was for me the most evocative visualisation of the tragic events.
Boston.com used Leaflet to create a map that allowed Bostonians and other witnesses to add their own accounts of the events to a map of Boston. The Boston Marathon Bombings: Your Story provided a compelling means for eye witnesses to share their own stories of the day's tragic events.
The shooting of one of the Tsarnaev brothers and the subsequent 22 hour manhunt for the other brother led to a proliferation of online maps as news sites and citizen journalists tried to provide some geographical context to the unfolding events. Again the New York Times provided one of the best mapped visualisations for the hunt for the bombing suspects.
The Hunt for the Boston Bombing Suspects uses a static Google Map with interactive hotspots to provide a narrative of the hunt for Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev.
Readers can either click on the interactive map markers to read the accompanying text or can simply scroll down the page. As the reader scrolls the map itself is held in place and as each stage in the news narrative appears below the map the relevant location is highlighted on the map. -

Street View Arrives in India
sur Google Maps Mania
Google Maps has gone for a very low key approach to its launch of Street View in India.
This week some small patches of Street View have appeared on Google Maps in Bangalore. All the imagery appears to me to be in private resorts, hotels, museums and other venues and not on public roads and streets.
Here are the Street View locations I've found so far:
Janapada Loka Folk Museum
Wonderla
Soukya International Holistic Health Center
Olde Bangalore Resort
Clarks Exotica
Prakruthi Club & Resort
If you find any other Street View imagery in Banglaore or other Indian cities post a link in the comments.

London's Virtual Street View Art Gallery
sur Google Maps Mania
This year's graphic arts festival Pick Me Up 2013 has an amazing virtual presence with the launch of Pick Me Up - Cartograph.
Cartograph uses Google Maps Street View to take the exhibition outside the confines of the gallery in Somerset House and into augmented digital locations around London. Locations around London have been chosen by the artists for their relevance to the artwork and then the art has been superimposed over those locations in Street View.
Some of the artworks have been placed on tower blocks, some appear in doorways or, as in this amazing spinning 3d virtual sculpture, appear floating over the pitch at Wembley Stadium. -

Historical Photos of the American Midwest
sur Google Maps Mania
Historic Natural Disasters is a really interesting project that is using Google Maps and Google Maps Street View to find the modern views of the locations pictured in historic photos from the floods and tornadoes that hit the American Midwest in 1913.
The site allows users to view historical photographs taken in the Midwest in 1913 side-by-side with the view as it is seen today on Google Maps Street View. Each photo also includes a link to a Google Map showing the location of where the photograph was taken.
In order to help geo-tag some of the photographs in their collection Historic Natural Disasters are running a Mapping History contest. To take part in the contest all you need to do is search Google Maps to find a potential, current-day location to match the view shown in the so far unlocated historical photographs. The images are labeled by city, and state, to give you a head start in your search.
When the contest is over, a submission will be drawn at random, and that person will win a $100 Amazon gift code provided by Historic Natural Disasters and insurancetown.com. -

The Giro d'Italia on Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
The Giro d'Italia is an annual bike race primarily held in Italy. This year's race takes place from May 4th until Sunday May 26th.
Cycling the Alps creates detailed Google Maps and Google Earth tours for most of the major European cycle races and this year's Giro d'Italia is no exception. On Cycling the Alps you can find detailed Google Maps of each of the tour's stages. For each stage you can view a detailed stage profile, view a 3d tour of each stage using the Google Earth plug-in and even play a Google Earth cycling game of each stage.
This year Cycling the Alps has also created a great preview video of Stage 19 of the race using Google Maps Street View imagery of the beautiful Stelvio Pass. -

Assess Your Flood Risk with Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
FloodTools.com calculates estimated flood risk for any address in the United States using data from several data sources, including FEMA and historic flood data.
The application is very easy to use. Just enter your address and you will receive a flood risk estimate based on the available data. The dynamic map marker shows your location on a Google Map with a gauge showing the estimated risk of flooding.
It is possible to also add a heat map layer that shows the flood risk around your neighborhood. Another Other layers allow you to view historical flood data, flood plains and historical hurricane tracks. -

Finding Photo Spheres with Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
Android's popular Photo Sphere camera feature allows anyone to create their own 360º panoramas, or photo spheres, and share them publicly on Google Maps.
SphereShare.net provides a nice interface to explore Photo Spheres shared with the SphereShare Android app. The site includes a handy gallery view that allows you to explore the most recently added, most popular and most viewed Photo Spheres. It also includes a Google Map that allows you to search for uploaded Photo Spheres by location.
You can also explore Photo Spheres on Google's own Photo Sphere Map. Google's map allows you to view all public Photo Spheres or you can even view a map showing only your own panoramic images taken with Photo Sphere. -

ZoomIn: The Kiwi Wiki Map
sur Google Maps Mania
ZoomIn is an interesting way to find out about different locations in New Zealand.
ZoomIn is a wiki map on which anyone can add places, comments, tags and photos. Users can use the ZommIn Google Map to find out how many comments have been added to a specific community and use the search box to search for a specific location.
When you use the search box to search for a location you are shown a Google Map of the area with a general description of the town and neighbourhood and photos of interesting locations. The map itself includes map markers for all the comments left by users in the area. Therefore ZoomIn can be a useful way for discovering some great information about New Zealand locations posted by local people. -

The Old New Deal on Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
The economic programs enacted in the United States between 1933 and 1936 under Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal not only helped reinvigorate a depressed economy but also left a vast legacy of public works that still exist today.
New Deal airports, schools, hospitals, post offices, art and highways are still in use 75 years after they were built. The Living New Deal Project Map is a Google Map that lets you explore the locations of 3,587 of the New Deal projects that still exist.
The map allows you to explore the projects not only by location but by category, by New Deal agencies and by the name of individual artists. -

Mapped Visualisations of Urban Transit Data
sur Google Maps ManiaThe Urban Data Challenge invited developers to create visualisations of transport data for San Francisco, Geneva, and Zurich. Unsurprisingly maps were a very popular choice for the developers who took part in the challenge. OpenStreetMaps and the Google Maps API seem to have been the most used tools amongst the winning visualisations.
One of the second prize winners was Frustration Index. Frustation Index uses a styled Google Map to show the level of service for transit services in San Francisco, Geneva, and Zurich.
The map looks at the transit data for one day in each city and visualises frustrations caused by over-crowding, delays, and speeds. The map includes a timeline so users can explore the changing data throughout the day.
One of the third prize winners was A City's Heartbeat. A City's Heartbeat uses Google Maps, CartoDB and D3.js to show three very different mapped visualisations of Geneva's tram network.
The first visualisation allows the user to to playback a mapped animation of tram movements over a two day period. The second visualisation uses a line graph to show the total traffic volume of the entire city.
The third visualisation uses the Google Earth browser plug-in to allow the user to simulate a 3d ride on any of the city's tram routes.
One Map, One Week in Public Transit received an honourable mention. In this visualisation Vasile Cotovanu uses his popular vehicle simulator to present a simulated real-time map of Geneva's TPG transit network.
The map animates the city's transit network based on the published timetables and allows the user to get 'real-time' information about the vehicle timetables, load and average speed. -

The Pinball Wizards Google Map
sur Google Maps Mania
Portland Pinball Map has become the Pinball Map and now shows the locations of pinball tables throughout North America.
The site consists of a number of regional maps, each curated by a local administrator, often with the support of a local league. The maps depend on user contributions and users can help keep the maps up-to-date by adding and removing machines from locations, and by submitting new pinball locations.
Users can also comment on a machine’s condition, upload photos of locations, add high scores and find upcoming pinball related events.
Pinball tables are fast becoming an endangered species. Even in France, where in the twentieth century it would have been harder to find a cafe without a table than a cafe with one, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find somewhere to realise your pinball wizard dreams.
Geoflipper can at least help you find one of the dwindling number of cafes and bars in France that hosts a pinball table. If you click on any of the map markers you can get the address of the venue, the name of the pinball tables on site and even get driving directions. -

Build it and they will come ...
sur Google Maps Mania
Baseball-Reference.com has mapped the history of minor league baseball from 1887 up to and including 2013.
The maps are pretty basic but it is interesting to observe the westward growth of baseball through the 19th and 20th centuries. Ideally I'd like to see someone animate this data with either the Google Maps API CanvasLayer library or with CartoDB's Torque library.
Using CartoDB's Torque library it should be easy to create something similar to this animated map of the growth of the US Post Office. -

Mapping the Battle of the Tweets
sur Google Maps Mania
The Football Tweet Map from the School of Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University allows football fans to visualise Twitter activity around English football teams.
There is a lot here to interest English football fans. For example, it is possible to view heatmaps of Tweets mentioning specific teams. The heatmaps provide an interesting visualisation of the geographic spread of a team's support (and yes London reds do exist).
The menu at the top of the game however lets you actually replay the Twitter activity around specific games (at the moment only three games have been covered). For example, you can view the Tweets from Newcastle and Sunderland fans before, during and after yesterday's North East derby.
I really like the way that important highlights in the game are overlaid on the map showing when the game kicked off, when goals were scored and to indicate half-time etc. -

The Maps of the Week
sur Google Maps Mania
This week Young Hahn wrote a very popular article / tutorial for A List Apart. The post, entitled Hack Your Maps, explains some of the design and coding choices made when creating an online interactive map.
The map that Young walks through in the article shows the locations of some of the most important scenes in the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans. The map includes some gorgeous map markers, styled map tiles and an innovative scrolling navigation device. It's definitely worth checking out both the map and the article.
This week I came across another really interesting article / tutorial looking at the creation of an animated map of one cab driver's shift in Boston. In Replaying the Night of a Cabbie Dan Shultz explains how he created a map that tells the story of an eight hour cab driver's shift in five minutes.
You can view the animated map itself on this Boston Globe article, The Cab Driver's Map.
I was also really impressed this week by a map by Greenpeace. Into the Arctic is an impressive map that is following the journey of four young Arctic ambassadors as they travel to the North Pole.
The aim of the expedition is to trek to the North Pole and lower a flag 4km to the seabed. Attached to the flag will be a capsule containing more than two and a half million signatures calling for a sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the pole.
The expedition is still continuing so you can check back each day to find out how the young explorers are progressing in their journey to the North Pole. -

The Mountain Goats Are Going Somewhere
sur Google Maps Mania
American folk rock band The Mountain Goats have written a number of songs over the years with the words 'Going to ...' in the title, with a destination completing the song's name.
Going to Somewhere is a fun little Street View application that will take you to a random destination based on one of The Mountain Goats 'Going to ...' songs. Just press 'Go' and you will be transported to a new destination.
The only thing missing from this app is the actual music. It would be great if you could actually listen to the relevant song when a new location is shown.

Household Growth on Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
Planning Resource has used Google Maps with Fusion Tables to map the growth in households in England. The number of households in England is projected to grow to 24.3 million in 2021. Planning Resource has two Google Maps to help visualise where most of that growth is expected to take place.
One map shows the projected increase in household growth between 2011 and 2021 by local authority. The other map displays 2011 household projections compared with 2008 household projections, showing which local authorities' projections have increased and those where the projections have decreased. -

Before Street View there was Overdrive
sur Google Maps Mania
In the 1960's artist Ed Ruscha started documenting the buildings along LA's major boulevards by taking continuous photographs. Ed Ruscha's Streets of Los Angeles is now on view in the Overdrive Exhibition at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
If the video above is any guide then the exhibition should prove fascinating. The video compares two continuous pans along Hollywood Boulevard, comparing the street in 1973 and 2002.
Artist Ant Carpendale has taken Street View as the inspiration for his short film The New View You. The film is an interesting look at identity and privacy in the digital age.
The ever increasing indoor Street View coverage on Google Maps is leading many companies to become ever more imaginative in how they present themselves on Google Maps. I like this Street View scene created by BDDP Unlimitef. -

North and South Korea Tensions Mapped

The Guardian's North Korea v South Korea Incident Map shows the location of over 150 incidents between the two countries since the Korean War in 1950.
The map covers every incident between the two countries, from diplomatic hostilities, through to more serious incidents involving fatalities. The map allows the user to view all the incidents in one or to filter the results by decade. The white markers indicate diplomatic or non-military incidents and the red markers display those incidents involving the military.
The map is part of The Guardian's Data Blog which means all the data has been made available to download. So if you think you can create a better visualisation of the data you are free to try. -

Citizen Cartography
sur Google Maps ManiaThe launch of OpenStreetMap in 2004 paved the way for crowd-sourced map making. Google itself launched its own Map Maker tool in 2008 to allow users to add details and make amendments to Google Maps. Because of licensing issues with the some of Google Maps' data providers however Map Maker is not available in every country (it was expanded to the UK today).
Old Maps Online
An interesting development in the last couple of years in cartography has been the growth of crowd-sourcing for georeferencing and annotating digitised, high-resolution historic maps. In the UK the British Library has led the way with its historical maps Georeferencing Project. You can view all the crowd-sourced georeferenced maps already completed by the British Library on the Old Maps Online website.
MapHub
A similar project has just been launched by Cornell Information Science with support from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Vienna. MapHub is an online application for exploring and annotating digitized, high-resolution historic maps. Using MapHub users are able to annotate historical maps and georeference locations on the historical maps using Google Maps and Google Earth.
The project has started with approximately 6000 public domain maps taken from the Library of Congress Historic Map division.

The Grateful Dead on Google Maps
sur Google Maps Mania
When I fist saw this Grateful Dead Shows map my first thought was that the remaining band members had decided to organise a really, really big reunion tour. On closer inspection however the map seems to be a map of all the venues that the Grateful Dead have ever played.
It is isn't often that we feature a non-API map on Google Maps Mania but there is something lo-fi about this embedded Google My Map that seems appropriate to the band being memorialised. What's more the map is still useful to any music fans interested in the many live appearances of the Grateful Dead.
Users can click on any of the venue markers and then click on the "Search for items related to this venue" link to get details of all the band's appearances at the venue.

ChatMap is an interesting Google Maps based chat application with some very cool embed options.
Users can chat with each other directly from the map. You can either click on one of the balloon-markers on the map to join an existing conversation or you can choose a free spot on the map to create a new chatroom at this location. The map sidebar also provides links to current conversations.
The ChatMap app also comes with some pretty nifty embed options that not only allow anyone to embed the map on their own website but to style the map to suit their website's design. Simply by changing a few parameters in the embed URL it is possible to change the map marker image, the colour of the map tiles and the initial map centre and zoom level.
The image above shows how the colours of the embedded map can be easily changed to match the colour scheme of any website. -

I'll Name That Street View in Ten
sur Google Maps Mania
One of my favourite Street View games has been updated with some great new features. Locatestreet presents a series of random Street Views to the user and the player has to guess the country where the image was captured.
There have been a number of similar games in the past that have asked players to guess locations from Google Maps satellite images. Using Street View images instead of satellite images presents a far more interesting challenge in my opinion as the player has far more visual clues from which to work.
The featured terrain, architecture, street furniture, modes of transport all provide clues that can help the player guess the country of origin of the random Street View image. The games also includes three clues for each image, but be warned - if you use a clue you will win less points.
Among the many new features on Locatestreet is the option to play the game worldwide (guess the country) or to play in any country (guess the region) where Google Maps has Street View coverage. -

Create Your Own Google Maps Persian Rugs
sur Google Maps Mania
Artist David Thomas Smith has been getting a lot of press in the last week for his Anthropocene exhibition, currently showing at the Cooper House Gallery in Dublin.
Smith's work consists of a series of Google Maps satellite images cut up, copied and stitched together to create what many are describing as like Google Maps based Persian rugs. The images hosted on the gallery's website do look very impressive and if you are in Dublin you should definitely visit the exhibition.

However, if you can't get to Dublin, don't worry as you can recreate this effect in a matter of seconds with #rorschmap. #rorschmap uses the Google Maps API to create a kaleidoscope for any location on the Earth. Essentially the application displays the Google Maps satellite view of a location and, using the same principle of multiple reflection that you find in kaleidoscopes, creates an animated Rorschach test effect.
If that doesn't impress you then why not try #rorschmap Street View Edition. Just enter your address into the app and you can drop-down the rabbit-hole and create a kaleidoscope from the Street View of your own home! -

The continent of Agon is now on Google Maps. Agon is a continent of wild and varied terrain, including forest, plain, desert, ice, jungle swamp, and wasteland areas. Luckily the Darkfall Unholy Wars Info Site has managed to map it all.
Darkfall is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The game world can now be viewed in this Darkfall: World Map. A number of categories of map marker can be added to the map to show locations that are important to players. These include; villages, mobs, banks, holdings, crafting stations, binding stones and portals.
The map also has a unique URL feature so users can zoom to any location and get a URL link to that map view that can then be shared with friends.

Mercator Projections & the Tissot Indicatrix
sur Google Maps Mania
The introduction of draggable polygons into the Google Maps API has proved very popular with developers. A number of developers have used draggable polygons to demonstrate the effects of Google using the Mercator Projection in Google Maps.
Google itself created a demo game, called the Mercator Puzzle. The game uses a number of country shapefiles that when moved along the lines of longitude resize to show the country's correct size anywhere on the map.
Darren Wien's has also used draggable polygons to create a Draggable Tissot Indicatrix. This Google Map places a number of circles (all with a 500km radius) all across the globe. You can see how the Mercator Projection distorts the circles in the screenshot above. In the app itself all the circle polygons are draggable. So, with this interactive Tissot Indicatrix, you can actually move the circles around the map and observe how they grow and shrink along lines of longitude. -

The Google Maps of the Week
sur Google Maps Mania
This week Google won the internets with its April Fool's joke - Treasure Map. The Treasure Map even outdid last year's awesome April Fool's joke from the Google Maps team - 8-bit Maps.
I think a large part of the appeal of the treasure map is down to the beautiful map design of Alex Griendling. However, Google's decision to include a number of built in treasure trails on the map was inspired and played a huge part in ensuring the map quickly went viral. Just to provide some context - the Google Maps Mania post introducing Treasure Maps received over four times as much traffic as any other post this week.
BTW - the screenshot above comes from Weigh Anchor, Me Hearties, a real-time pirate tracking map built using the Treasure Map tiles.
Elsewhere this week I was impressed by two trip planning Google Maps based applications.
Outpost is a peer-to-peer trip planner that can help you find a ride to your destination with Ridejoy, book a room with Airbnb and find things to do, once you reach your destination, with Vayable.
To use Outpost you just need to enter a home address and a destination, the dates of your trip and the number of people taking the trip. A route for the trip is then shown on Google Maps, alongside the results for available ride-shares, Airbnb rooms and suggested things to do from Vayable.
Flightconnections.com is a Google Map that helps you find where you can fly to from different airports around the world. It then helps you find and book a hotel at your destination and can even show you where you can rent a car.
If you click on any of the airport markers on the map then all the destinations that you can fly to from that airport are displayed on the map with polylines. If you then click on any of the displayed destinations you can find out which airlines fly the route.
It is also possible to select your destination airport and view nearby car rental offices and hotels on the map. So not only can you find a flight with flightconnections.com you can also book your seat on the plane and find and book your hotel for when you arrive.

The Maps of the Week
sur Google Maps Mania
James Cheshire and Ed Manley's maps of the Twitter Languages of London and the Twitter Languages of New York have rightly proved very popular visualisations of the multi-cultural nature of both cities.
Inspired by James and Ed's maps Simon Jackson has now created a similar map for Melbourne. Tweets of Melbourne uses ESRI maps and data from November 2012. Simon says he is updating the map with new data every weekend.
One of the most interesting aspects of the map for me is the number of Asian languages being used in the city. It is shame that Twitter is so young. It would have been interesting to view a similar map from the 1970's. In 1975 Australia dropped it's controversial 'White Australia Policy'. Does this map reflect a wider realignment of Australia's geopolitics away from Europe towards closer integration with its South East Asian neighbours?
Metropolitain is a data visualisation of traffic on the Paris Metro. Users can click on any of the city's Metro stations and view data on how many passengers passed through the station in 2011.
The Metro map includes a great 3d view that allows the user to turn a 2d heat map of traffic on the Metro system into a great contour map of Metro traffic.
The World Food Programme's Hunger Map shows the prevalence of undernourishment in countries around the world as of 2010 - 2012. The indicator is an estimate of the percentage of the population having access to an amount of energy from food insufficient to maintain a healthy life.
Users can click on individual countries on the map and learn more about the food security situation in that country and the WFP's work in the country using the tab controls in the map sidebar. -

100,000 Stars is an amazing interactive visualization of over 100,000 of our nearest stars.
The map actually shows the location of 119,617 nearby stars derived from multiple sources, including the 1989 Hipparcos mission. You can pan the map using your mouse and zoom in and out using your touchpad or mouse wheel. Click a star’s name on the map to learn more about it.
The Asterank 3d Asteroid Orbit Space Simulation is an amazing WebGL application that shows a view of our solar system with over 580,000 asteroids mapped. It is possible to rotate, zoom and pan the simulation. It is also possible to refine the asteroids shown by most valuable and most accessible (just in case you have any asteroid mining plans).
My own Star Map is looking a little dated now but may still be of interest to fans of astronomy. The app superimposes a number of astronomical animation videos from YouTube over Google Sky.

If you would like to see the pillar in the Alma Bridge underpass in Paris into which Princess Diana crashed, or have a look at the intersection in Los Angeles where the Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down, then Famous Death Locations is probably right up your street.
If you don't have a morbid fascination with where famous people have died you might instead enjoy Famous Death Locations' wonderfully 1990's style retro web design. Create Your Own Treasure Hunt
sur Google Maps Mania
Judging by the number of comments and visitors to this blog on Monday it would seem that Google's Treasure Map, with its two treasure hunts, was hugely popular. It therefore seems like an appropriate time to introduce an application that can help you easily create your own Google Maps treasure hunt.
Mission MapQuest lets you add as many questions (clues) and answers (locations) as you like to a Google Map in order to create a virutal 'treasure hunt'. Players then have to solve your clues and zoom into the answer's location on the map. When the player answers correctly they will find a little golden coin at the location.
Mission MapQuest comes with one example of a game already created that you can play to get an idea of the format. I can't help thinking however that Mission MapQuest is missing a trick by not showing all the created games up front on its home page. -

Treasure Map - Spolier
sur Google Maps Mania
This year Google's April Fool's Day layer on Google Maps is an attractive Treasure Map.
The map includes a number of picture clues that you can follow to reach the hidden treasure on the maps. Each of the picture clues includes a number which is actually a latitude and longitude that you can follow to the next clue.
It seems that there are at least 8 different treasure trails that you can follow on the map. Each of the final treasures are shown with a red symbol (so far Google Maps Mania readers have found a red compass, a red ring, a red sword, a red axe, a red rope, a red coin, red bones and a red gun) Most (if not all the symbols also seem to be in the shape of different letters. Looking at the letters revealed so far it looks to me like they will end up spelling 'April Fool'. Co-ordinates to the final treasure symbols are given at the end of this post.
The first picture clue that I have found is off the coast of Southend-on-Sea, in the UK. I've followed the clues until I arrived at what I think is where the treasure is buried. If you can't be bothered to type in all the clues yourself you can follow along on this Treasure - Spoiler Map. This map follows the path to the red sword.
I don't know if this is related to any of the treasure hunts on the map but I have also found a treasure chest in Puerto Rico (switch to treasure map view to see the chest). Also (and I'm sure this unrelated to any treasure hunt) I've found a little Gangnam Style in Seoul.

There are actually a number of hidden clues on the map. Look for icons that have numbers beside them - the numbers are map co-ordinates that you can follow to new locations. Check out the comments below for help on where to find the treasure or check out this Treasure Maps - Spoilers post.
If you do manage to find the two passwords hidden on the map then you should be able to access two zipped files that Google have now posted online. Here's what Google says about the files:

Introducing Google Maps Engine Lite
sur Google Maps ManiaGoogle has today launched a new mapping platform Google Maps Engine Lite, that provides an easy map creation tool for those who haven't got the coding skills to use the Google Maps API.
Google Maps Engine Lite is free to use for non-business purposes. Using the tool it is very easy to create and share a map containing up to three different data sets. Users can add locations to the map by simply dropping markers on a map (or by tracing a route). Alternatively it is possible to import data from a CSV or XLSX file.
Another way to create a map with Google Maps Engine Lite is to simply import data from a My Map. For example I created a map of the locations in the Two Gallants in Google Maps Engine Lite in a matter of seconds using one of my My Maps.
To create the map all I had to do was choose the My Map from a list of maps I have created in Google Maps. Once the data has been imported it is then possible to share a link to the map or embed it in a website (as I have done above).
Google Earth Engine Lite is very easy to use. However if you run into problems trying to create a map you might find this Google Earth Outlook tutorial helpful.

In order to prove that the UK's technology industry extends beyond the hipster confines of London's East End, Tech Britain has been touring the country mapping the UK's start-ups, incubators and investors. The result is this Tech Britain map and a series of video interviews with some of the start-ups that Tech Britain met on journey around the country.

Tech City Map is a visually striking Google Map of the technology companies and startups in east London.
The map shows the locations of London's silicon roundabout area. The 'show networks' option on the map allows users to visualise the connections between the over 1,300 companies. If you click on an individual map marker there is also an option to view the latest Tweets from the selected tech company.
The Cambridge Cluster (also known as Silicon Fen) is the name given to an area in and around Cambridge, England where a large number of high-tech businesses are located.
The Cambridge Cluster Map is a Google Map showing the locations of the companies that contribute to Cambridge's high-tech sector. The size of the map marker used for each company represents the number of employees in the company. The size of the circles around some of the companies' markers represent the size of the company's revenue. -

Google Maps Street View has proved very popular in a number of online promotional campaigns in the last few years. #FindtheEggs is a good example of how a promotional campaign can be made more interactive and fun with a little help from Street View.
The UK's largest supermarket chain Tesco has used Google Maps Street View to create a virtual find the Easter egg competition. In #FindTheEggs players have to navigate around Street View and collect three of the thousands of eggs that have been hidden on the map. Find one and you win a free chocolate!

GeoData-Checkout is an open data platform for creating interactive time-line maps. It allows developers to easily create online maps that can visualise data through time.
You can see the platform in action on the Historic Chicago Timeline Map. This map uses the platform to allow users to view an animated time-line of building construction in Chicago. Users can define an area on the map by using a polygon tool and then view an interactive map that animates the construction of individual buildings in the defined area by date of construction.
The MLB Payroll Map is a beautiful mapped visualisation of salaries and payrolls across Major League Baseball teams and players.
MLB teams are displayed on the map with dynamic map markers which are sized to reflect the size of the team's payroll. Users of the map can therefore see at a glance which teams have the largest payrolls. If you select an individual team on the map the marker fans out to show individual players. Again the size of the markers reflects the size of the players' salaries.

Here's an interesting Google Map that I came across today from Greater Greater Washington. Following the 2010 US census it was found that there were significant population differences in the city's electoral wards.
Greater Greater Washington therefore created The DC Redistricting Game. The game presents DC's wards on a Google Map. The map sidebar shows which wards are within 5% of the average population, and which wards are too small and too large. Using the map you have to switch the census tracts around between the different wards until all the wards are within the 5% average.

Happy Birthday John Snow
sur Google Maps Mania
Today marks the 200th year of the birth of British physician John Snow.
Snow is most famous for his dot map of cholera cases in London's Soho. In 1854 Snow plotted the deaths caused by cholera in the area and the location of eleven water pumps used by the locals. The distribution of the dots helped Snow discover that cholera occurred most frequently among those who drank from the Broad Street water pump.
Snow's map helped to disprove the then popular theory that diseases such as cholera and bubonic plague were air borne and spread by 'bad air'.

CartoDB has used Google Maps to create a modern take on Snow's 1854 dot map. CartoDB's map uses larger sized dots to indicate the number of deaths at each location rather than individuals dots for each death.
If you want to create your own map from John Snow's data then have a look at Robin's Blog. Robin Wilson has mapped John Snow's data onto an Ordnance Survey map and also made the data available via Google Fusion Tables. -

Walk Score's Travel Time API is a great resource to visualise travel times on a map.
Using the API it is possible to display walking distance, public transit times, driving distance, and biking times on a Google Map. There are obviously unlimited possible uses of the API, from showing walking times from individual stores on a store locator to showing travel times from properties on a real-estate map.
I've had a brief look at the API documentation and it looks very easy to implement the API into a Google Map. For example, the map above involves about six lines of simple JavaScript code to display a walking time of about 15 minutes around a given location.
There are currently two API plans available. The Developer Trial is free for 1,000 calls per day. A Premium Plan is also available for developers who expect high-volume usage and is costed on a case by case basis.
