Call for paper AAG 2012 New York: Fictional Geographies and the Geoweb
Organizers: Thierry Joliveau (UJM Saint-Etienne) and Sébastien Caquard (Concordia, Montréal)

The mutual influence between fiction and territories is well known. While films and novels are frequently infused with representations of place, they also contribute to shaping the identity of those places. Not only does fiction mobilize imaginary geographies of particular places, they can also contribute to their modification, through attracting visitors and tourists, for instance. The possibilities now offered by the Geoweb have shifted and intensified the nature of the connection between fiction and territories.  It is now possible for Internet users to use a mapping service such as Google Map to locate the action of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. It is also possible to geo-tag places with excerpts from novels and scenes from movies, and to allow individuals to retrieve them on site using a cell phone with GPS services. The Geoweb is becoming a central interface in the growing interaction between fictional spaces and referential places.

In this session, we invite participants to explore:
    The theoretical underpinning of the new relationships between fictional spaces, referential places and the Geoweb;
    The new forms of spaces emerging from the combination of the real/referential and the fictional;
    The consequences of the growing interaction between fictional geography and the geoweb;
    Emerging geoweb tools and applications dedicated to the representation of fictional geography.
