Subject: MI-L MapInfo 7.5 Feature List

I'm a bit surprised that MapInfo hasn't posted this information to the list
or on its website ...

Anyway, there was a MapInfo User Group meeting in Perth, Australia, earlier
today in which the new features of MapInfo 7.5 were detailed and listed in a
handout. For the info of other listers, here are the new features:

- web map service (WMS) client support allowing you to download maps from a
MapInfo, Intergraph and ESRI WMS server into MapInfo Professional
- improvements to the existing tools as well as new tools such as draw by a
bearing and distance in metric units and a new move/offset tool
- map printing to scale
- better scaling when printing fill patterns
- improvements to custom symbols including more colours, the ability to
change symbol size and adding more custom symbols
- mouse wheel functionality so that you can zoom in and out while drawing
- adding buffer or voronoi information into a new table
- rotating objects by entering an angle and using more rotation points
- improvements to the Snap tool including larger crosshairs or a circle
displaying the snap tolerance
- Excel files greater than 32767 rows can be imported
- tick mark to indicate the current window in the Window menu (not sure what
this is)
- creating points from character columns
- geological symbol sets have been added (from Encom's Discover add-on)
- raster display and processing performance improvements
- additional projections and transformations
- more menu shortcuts

The release date (in Australia, which generally lags one month behind the US
in past releases I've found) is slated for September 2003.

MapInfo 8.0 .NET platform is tentatively slated for a (March?) 2004 release.

One person also asked about the introduction of 3D .TAB files. The response
from the MapInfo representative was that it was high on their list, but
would not appear in MapInfo 7.5 or even 8.0, as MapInfo had decided that
performance (aka speed) requirements were more important for users. If users
want to see a feature they should contact their local rep or MapInfo ... if
enough responses on an issue are received, it may appear in a future
version.

Bill
