Avant tout, quelques termes techniques et leur définition (cliquer sur le mot): MNS, MNE (en anglais DEM), MNT (en anglais DTM).

Moyen de production

Petite et moyenne surface

Traditionnellement le levé topographique directement sur le terrain est la première méthode de levé d'un MNT.

La photogrammétrie produit avec la stéréoscopie des MNT et MNE sur des distances plus grandes, mais le travail de restitution reste long et fastidieux.

Grande surface

Les technologies modernes ont permis la production de données d'altitude de manière plus systématique, ce qui a permis l'apparition récente de couverture mondiale en MNT.

L'interférométrie radar est la méthode employée pour la réalisation de la mission SRTM.

Le lidar est une technique similaire au radar, la différence principale étant la lumière émise au lieu des ondes radio pour le radar.
