Définition: photographie d'une portion du territoire prise depuis un capteur aéroporté. Le capteur est dénommé “caméra”, même s'il s'agit d'un appareil photo perfectionné. On distingue les caméras numériques, et les caméras argentiques.
Selon les traitements qui suivent la prise de vue aérienne proprement dite, la donnée peut gagner en valeur ajoutée et évoluer jusqu'à l'orthophotoplan, utilisable comme un fond de carte géoréférencé.
La photographie aérienne est une donnée géographique à part entière. Ses usages sont nombreux. Le développement des nouvelles technologies de l'imagerie aérienne permet d'obtenir des produits de plus en plus accessibles et de plus en plus utiles. De fait, les orthophotos haute résolution sont devenues des référentiel géographique grande échelle utilisés dans la plupart des collectivités territoriales.
