Arcview a démarré comme programme de visualisation de données géographiques et de cartes créé par ESRI à partir d'autres logiciels. Au fur et à mesure de son développement, des fonctionnalités ont été incluses et il est devenu un vrai SIG capable de faire des analyses complexes et de la gestion de données. Son interface conviviale a séduit de nombreuses personnes par rapport à ArcInfo, beaucoup plus puissant.
Son développement s'est arrêté à la version 3.3, pour être repris dans un package commun avec ArcInfo, la suite ArcGis initialisée en version 8.
ArcView (version 8 et plus)
ArcView est le premier niveau de licence de la suite Arcgis produite par la société Esri.
ArcEditor
ArcEditor est la solution intermédiaire de la gamme ArcGis. Elle contient toutes les fonctionnalités d'Arcview mais permet en plus de contrôler la Topologie des fichiers de forme et une mise à jour DAO avancée ainsi que de gérer les version des données des Système de Gestion de Bases de données (SGBD).
