La mise en forme des fenêtres Carte, Mise en page, le choix des styles pour les objets cartographiques, le positionnement des étiquettes, la couche Dessin etc. sont autant d'opérations qu'il est intéressant de sauvegarder pour ne pas avoir à les reproduire à chaque ouverture de MapInfo. Le document de travail (Workspace) vous permet de sauvegarder une session de travail.

Le document de travail est un fichier unique contrairement à une table MapInfo. Il ne contient pas de données géographiques. Il renferme simplement une série d'instructions qui est donnée à MapInfo et qui précise les tables géographiques utilisées dans la session, les fenêtres Carte ou Données ouvertes, la mise en forme des objets, etc. Le document MapInfo peut-être assimilé à une macro des logiciels bureautiques.
Ainsi il peut exister un grand nombre de documents qui utilisent les mêmes tables de données dans des mises en forme différentes.
Cependant, comme le document contient des instructions sur les tables à utiliser, il est indispensable de préserver ces tables telles que lors de l'enregistrement du document. Si, par exemple, une table est déplacée ou renommée et que le document n'est pas réenregistré pour prendre en compte la modification, ce dernier ne s'ouvrira pas.
