Présentation
ThManager est un logiciel opensource de création et d’édition de thésaurus. Il a la particularité de générer des thésauri au format SKOS/RDF de manière hiérarchique, respectant alors une arborescence.
ThManager est utilisable en espagnol ou en anglais (choix à faire au lancement de l'application). Cependant l'outil propose une liste complète de langues afin de spécifier le langage des thesauri créés.

Standards
Il permet de respecter les standards suivants :
- norme RDF – SKOS* (Simple Knowledge Organisation System) - qui permet la création de liens entre les langages documentaires classiques et les normes du Web sémantique.
A noter : SKOS est passé, le 18 août 2009, au statut officiel de « Recommandation W3C ».
- normes ISO relative à la conception de thésaurus monolingue (ISO 2788:1986) et multilingue (ISO 5964:1985)
- norme du Dublin Core (ISO 15836) relative à la description de thésauri (méta-information). Permet les actions d'import et d'export.
* SKOS ou Simple Knowledge Organisation System (Système simple d'organisation des connaissances) est une famille de langages formels permettant une représentation standard des thésaurus, classifications ou tout autre type de vocabulaire contrôlé et structuré. SKOS est construit sur la base du langage RDF, et son principal objectif est de permettre la publication facile de vocabulaires structurés pour leur utilisation dans le cadre du Web sémantique.

Pourquoi utiliser des thesauri au format SKOS ?
Les applications de catalogage tels Géosource et MDweb (méthode pour MDWeb) peuvent lire le format SKOS.
Le format SKOS est lu par l'application Géosource - ce qui permet de visualiser correctement l'arborescence de ce type de thesaurus. Mais Géosource est incapable d'écrire sous le format SKOS/RDF.
Certains catalogues de métadonnées ne permettant pas l'écriture sous ce format, il est donc nécessaire d'utiliser un outil connexe tel que ThManager. Il suffit ensuite d'importer les thésauri générés vers l'application de catalogage (qui doit nécessairement supporter la syntaxe au format SKOS/RDF).
Utiliser ThManager permet de modifier aisément un thésaurus commun à plusieurs applications de catalogage (par exemple lorsque l'on utilise une application dédiée aux métadonnées de données et une autre dédiée aux métadonnées de cartes).
