Rapport entre les dimensions des éléments représentés sur une carte ou un plan (numérateur) et les dimensions
réelles de ces éléments (dénominateur). Exemple: à l'échelle du 1:500, 1 mètre sur la carte
représente 500 mètres sur le terrain.
chacun place un concept différent derrière l’expression «grandes échelles», pour les uns il s’agit de levé au 1:200 ; pour d’autres, il s’agit des gammes d’échelles utilisées pour le plan cadastral (1:1000 au 1:5000) ; ce concept-même n’est pas satisfaisant pour les bases de données vecteur, où, dans les logiciels SIG, la fonction de loupe permet de s’affranchir totalement de l’échelle à laquelle est représentée une donnée, et donc de son utilisation pertinente. En revanche, cette façon de pratiquer fonctionne bien avec les données de type raster (image), qui ne sont réellement lisibles et exploitables que dans une gamme d’échelles bien déterminée.
Pour les données vecteur, la notion d'échelle doit surtout être associée à l'échelle de production des données.
