Définition
Géoréférencer quelque chose implique de définir son existence dans l'espace physique, c'est-à-dire établir une relation entre un Raster ou un Vecteur et la Projections cartographiques d'une carte ou dans un système de coordonnées géographiques. Cette procédure est nécessaire pour la modélisation de données dans les Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG) et la Cartographie.
Quand on travaille avec des données issues de différentes sources dans un SIG, il est important que le logiciel puisse ajuster toutes ces données dans un même système de référence, afin qu'il les superpose. Certains logiciels ne le permettent pas et nécessitent de Reprojeter les données dans un système commun à toutes les données.
