Résolution
On parle de résolution, ou de taille des pixels sur le terrain, pour les orthophotos numériques. Cette caractéristique remplace ce qui était l'échelle à l'ère de l'argentique. Un cliché de résolution 35 cm signifie que les pixels représentent un “bout” de terrain de 35 cm par 35 cm. Plus la résolution est bonne (c'est à dire petite), plus le “piqué” est bon, ou encore, plus on voit de détails sur le terrain. On peut comparer avec une loupe qui permettrait de voir l'objet observé de plus près.
A titre d'exemple, les photos satellite de type SPOT 5 ont une résolution plus ou moins égale à 5 m (et encore, en mode panchromatique), tandis que la photo de Nancy sur Google a un pixel de 12 cm sur le terrain.
