Dans le processus de construction des cartes, les projections sont nécessaires pour représenter la surface terrestre réelle sur un support plan.
Cette surface est en première approximation assimilée à un géoïde. Le géoïde est une surface définie par le lieu des points d'équipotentiel gravitaire au niveau moyen des mers. A cause de la distribution irrégulière de la masse interne de la terre, le géoïde a une forme irrégulière qui le rend inutilisable pour les calculs sur des données spatiales. C'est pourquoi le géoïde est approximé à une forme voisine plus régulière, un sphéroïde, souvent appelé ellipsoïde. L'ellipsoïde est mathématiquement plus simple à utiliser que le géoïde. Il constitue la base du type de système de référence de coordonnées le plus connu : le système de coordonnées géographiques. La position d'un point sur l'ellipsoïde est dès lors exprimée par sa latitude et longitude.
La taille et la forme de l'ellipsoïde sont en général choisies de manière à ce qu'il coïncide localement le plus possible avec le géoïde.
Le choix correspond à la définition des origine, orientation, taille et forme de l'ellipsoïde. Ce concept est appelé “datum géodésique”.
Il n'est toutefois pas recommandé en cartographie parce qu'il décrit la géométrie d'une surface curviligne, et il est impossible de représenter une telle géométrie dans un plan euclidien sans introduire de distorsions. Le contrôle de ces distorsions fait partie de l'étude des projections cartographiques.
