GPS Adventures at the Maryland Science CenterVerySpatial

Dan at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore emailed to let us know that GPS Adventures, a traveling exhibit all about GPS and geocaching, will be opening tomorrow, February 20th and will be running until April 18th.

GPS Adventures gives visitors an introduction to GPS technology and the basics of navigation in general, and offers some cool hands on experience. The exhibit is set up like a small maze, which the idea of simulating a geocaching event by having visitors explore 4 different environments, find a hidden cache and solve a puzzle in each area, and then use the code to enter each of 4 Satellite Rooms.

GPS Adventures is a great way to get kids introduced to GPS and the role it plays in our world, so if you can get to Baltimore, definitely check it out. For those of you on the West Coast, GPS Adventures will be heading to Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, California after it leaves the Maryland Science Center in April.

Here's in batch mode some geonews not shared yet. On the Google front, here's about using the Google Maps API v3 in smartphone applications. There's also Geoweb Guru that shared last week a technical overview of the Google Maps Data API.

The FGT blog continues on his quest for the perfect GeoPad, sharing his field tests with the Intel Classmate Convertible. The same blog tells us about BeGraphic Lite, a free Excel add-on for map and data visualization. This entry discusses TIFF, ECW and such formats on mobile devices. If you thought, like me, that Colombo was the capital of Sri Lanka, it's not. There's also a map of Facebook connections in the U.S. Also from TMR, it's trivia but poke the geogeek in me, envelopes lined with a Google Maps printout of the return address. Canada is expanding it's Arctic mapping efforts with robotic submarines.

USGS cut will cause the states to bleedNSGIC News

The President's budget for USGS proposes a $3.5 million cut in the National Geospatial Program. This cut means the loss of 13 state liaisons. With some liaison serving more than one state, this could affect one-third of the states.

"The USGS liaisons have provided the best single conduit for partnerships between the states and the Federal government," said NSGIC President Will Craig in a letter to the leaders of the House Appropriations Subcommittee that will be the first to review the President's budget.

The budget cut will also reduce federal partnership dollars that have leveraged significant investment in state and local data development projects. Craig went on to say, "If anything, we request that Congress significantly increase these partnership dollars, not cut them."

Craig is urging NSGIC members and friends to contact their Members of Congress, especially in the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. "Tell them about the value of the USGS liaisons and partnership funds. States need these resources."

India Remote Sensing Data Policy (continued)Spatial Law and Policy

Mr. Malay Adikhari's post on India's Remote Sensing Data Policy resulted in an interesting exchange of emails between Mr. Adikhari and Mr. Sumit Sen. They both agreed to let me post their exchange here.

Mr. Sen: Kevin, its interesting that you bring alive a long discussed debate. Of course there are some economic issues that make the ISRO dictated RSDP in India and a multinational service provider like Google, totally different species. Nevertheless since the point is made, let me also add the perspective unique to India, which faces major development challenges as well as the responsibility of being a fast growing economic power. The RSDP and most Indian polcies (see also the Open Series maps of SoI) have never considered the distinction between the vast majority of rural population which is deprived of even large scale maps or satellite images and the urban upper class who would rather pick up issues of privacy etc. The fundamental problem is "who are these policies for?" And surely an all encompassing policy will be as messy as the Indian political system, least to say that it may be difficult to find a champion for such a policy.

Mr. Adikhari: Dear All,

I would like to share some points in reply:

1. Who creates the Indian political system? It is we, the common people of India. Leaders are not coming outside from India. So instead of blaming political system, the attitude and mind set-up of Indians should be changed to welcome a dynamic policy whatever be its name.

2. Due to tremendous development of technology, the different types of users with the increasing numbers are coming in the Indian market. So it is very difficult to reply the question “who are these policies for?” But I agree that though all policies are ultimately for grassroot people of India but it is very difficult to implement the policy at the ground level. So sometimes though this question has answer but the Indians have doubt about the answer.

3. Another point is that people are blaming SOI. But if an organization has multidimensional role, it is not possible to satisfy every customers at any point of time. It is like that taking water from a bucket but the water level will remain the same. This is next to impossible. So the Government of India should revisit the role of SOI itself.

4. Issues of privacy etc. will come only when commercialization comes into the picture. India already reached that point. So whoever are the users, rural population or urban, they are purchasers of data from the market. What policies stated that do not matter, if any user is not satisfied of the data, the user has every right to go to court for the deficiency. Does the RSDP prepare for that?

5. Being a student of law, I am sorry to say that law technology nexus is very poor in India. Even the tremendous technological development is not attracted by the major part of the legal fraternity in India .This is one of the drawbacks to see India as a fast growing economic power.

Mr. Sen: Some very strong points you have made but i dont understand to whom these replies are? Let me clarify that there has never been a blame game here. To state that a system is messy and complex is only a fact [1]

And also to identify "grassroot" people in India is big challenge in a democracy. Everyone is. Even with a vast divides of digital enablement, economic and literacy. So yes if they are for the grassroot people whom does these policies benifit? and for whom are these inconsequential?

The aspects of law and legal aspects are slightly different from policies. Some legal issues in geospatial data are well known [2,3] but have not figured in our cyber laws. They would, eventually and technology will play an important role as it has done in other nations[4].

Mr. Adikhari: I would like to clarify my previous mail. I am not criticizing anybody. Your mails are excellent. What I am getting with interacting peoplesthat they are always criticizing politicians in each and every matter. But the politicians are elected by their votes.

SOI is always criticized for not providing the data easily. It is the old framework of SOI made by Government of India, for which people are not getting the services from them easily. So how SOI is responsible for delay ?

I fully agree with you regarding the policies for grassroot people.To detect the grassroot people is also a problem. But the Right to Information Act is so powerful that the many village people are using this weapon to get the happenings and realities in the top level. The Government of India itself is facing a lots of difficulties after its enactment. To whom does the policies benefit for ? And what benefit ? Your question must be answered by the concerned authority when some RTI application will be filed. Already NRSC (Hyderabad) people will start thinking about the RTI.

From International law, space law comes; spatial (geospatial) law from space law. But the geospatial law covers also cyber law. Yes, you are right that there is no combination of geospatial and cyber law in India. The legislating body must think it. Otherwise there will be misuse of data in India. Also it will not support the development of geospatial industry in India.

Geoff Zeiss: Consortech Seminar: Convergence of Engineering and GIS

Wednesday I had the opportunity to speak at a unique seminar organized by Consortech in Montreal which brought together civil and structural engineers and GIS folks in the same room. Pierre Genest, the president of Consortech, told me the audience of about 130 was close to evenly split between engineering and geospatial. To me this is further evidence of the convergence that is taking place and that is breaking down the walls between traditional GIS, CAD, and BIM.
The technology that is enabling this to happen was very much in evidence. Tom Schoenhofer from Leica talked about the latest advances in terrestrial laser-scanning, and Consortech talked about how Oracle Spatial enables the storing and manipulation of point clouds. Frédéric Brière of the Quebec Transportation Ministry outlined how LiDAR is being used to digitize the entire road network of Quebec. Consortech demonstrated AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 and Civil 3D 2010's support for point clouds.
Consortech demonstrated how Navisworks can integrate data from different sources to enable clash detection and 4D modeling using project management data from Primavera or Microsoft Project. Consortech also announced support for two new products, LandXplorer and Dynamite VSP. LandXplorer enables the 3D modeling of entire urban environments (digital cities) by integrating data from engineering and GIS data sources. Dynamite VSP integrates civil engineering data from Civil3d, Bentley InRoads, Geopak, and other civil engineering design software to create 3D visualizations running in 3ds Max. Simon Bouffard from Genivar described their integrated approach to 3D simulation called Geo-Design and showed some fascinating examples of projects they have completed using this approach with municipal governments and other clients.
The guest speaker at lunch was Luc Levecque from the City of Montreal who talked from a GIS manager's perspective about the necessity of combining engineering and geospatial data to be able to model and simulate complex urban environments.
Kevin Wiebe from Safe Software hit the nail on the head in his presentation on interoperability. Geospatial interoperability has made a lot of progress over the past couple of decades, but the challenge of integrating engineering, architecture, GIS, utility infrastructure models, communications models, building information models (BIM), road and highway models, and other sources is a tremendous challenge. Safe Software's FME and FME server products support 3D models such as BIM, and Kevin said that Safe's support for model-based design data stores is accelerating.
I think what is creating the common ground for engineers, utility designers, and GIS folks is model-based design (BIM); 3D visualization, analysis and simulation; and the vision of digital cities. I commend Consortech for recognizing this trend and putting together a seminar that brought engineers and GIS folks together in the same room. As Kevin Wiebe said, "the conference was really a great opportunity to be a part of the buzz that is growing around 3D ... I am excited about the possibilities of where this will go, and I think you are right that there really is the emerging of a brand new economy."

Via AGISRS, I found out about the Political Risk Map 2010. What it is: "Aon ranked the political risk of 209 countries and territories, measuring risk of currency inconvertibility and transfer; strikes, riots and civil commotion; war; terrorism; sovereign non-payment; political interference; supply chain interruption; legal and regulatory risk. The risk in each country was ranked as Low, Medium-Low, Medium, Medium-High, High or Very High. [...] Sam Wilkin, associate director of the consultancy practice at Oxford Analytica, explains: "For the past 20 years, global population growth has outpaced growth in agricultural output. A run up in world food prices in 2007 and 2008 led to dramatic geopolitical events, from food riots in India to worker unrest in Cambodia. Last month the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations warned that global food prices could quickly rise again."

Welcome to the Friday’s Food for Thought post on got geoint? Last Friday, the opening day of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics was marred by the tragic death of Georgia luger Nodar Kumaritashvili. While this event tragic set the tone for the start of the Olympics and (rightly) trumped most of the other press coverage of the Winter Games, there was a world of GEOINT-related stories happening around the Olympics. So, for this week’s FFT post, we would like to showcase all the GEOINT stories — giving these stories their full due. Happy Friday.

Google, Bing and Yahoo Mark the Start of the Vancouver Olympics

While the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics have officially started, you can brush up on your history of the competition, the location or maybe the schedule of the events, by using a search engine of course. All the major search engines are marking the start of the competition with a custom homepage. It seems like Google has done a custom logo every other day or so lately, so there is absolutely no surprise here, but Yahoo and Bing are more reserved with the type of events they mark on their homepages. Mapping the Vancouver Games

Among the many battles being waged in Vancouver is the Olympic struggle between Microsoft and Google. The Internet giants are both aiming to make sure that their search engines, mapping programs, and mobile software all capture the spirit of the Winter Games. Google has been featuring Olympic-themed doodles on its home page, while Bing is featuring Olympic-themed photos as its background, with the images rotating several times a day. Microsoft can also tap the fact it is helping power NBC’s Olympics Web site through MSN, giving it access to quite a bit of content from the Games. More importantly, both companies have turned their mapping software into a great way to keep up with the competition. Check out the full CNET article here.

Live-Mapping Olympic Outsider Photos

If you can’t actually attend the Olympic Games, the Seattle Times has a cadre of producers, reporters, videographers and Olympic fans in Vancouver to show you what’s happening on the ground and give you a taste of the scene swirling around the 2010 winter games. So, check out this blog post that features a Google Map that the newspaper has set up that features iPhone photos from some folks on the ground at the Olympics. Almost like you are really there. Well, not really, but pretty cool…).

Army Guardsman Posts Best U.S. Finish in Olympic Biathlon

On February 14the, a Utah National Guard Soldier posted the best American finish ever in the biathlon at the Winter Olympics.Sgt. Jeremy Teela, a three-time Olympian, finished ninth in the men’s 10-kilometer sprint on the first day of competition in the biathlon in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The previous best finish was recorded by Teela’s teammate, Jay Hakkinen, who was 10th in the Torino Olympics in 2006. Despite missing two targets, Teela’s strong skiing pushed him five seconds ahead of one of Russia’s top skiers. “That’s good for the ski form of Jeremy Teela,” said Chad Salmela, a commentator for NBC Sports. With this finish, Teela will start ninth in the men’s 12.5-kilometer pursuit Feb. 16. He also will compete in the 20-kilometer event Feb. 18, the 15-kilometer mass start Feb. 21, and the 4×7 five-kilometer relay Feb. 26. Check out the full article from the Army’s web site here.

Online travel resource Lonely Planet has made its Vancouver Travel Guide: The Sights application for iPhone and iPod Touch available for free in Apple’s App Store until March 1. As such, we came up with the Kenny Loggins (featuring Michael McDonald) 1979 hit “This Is It.” If only the Foo Fighters would cover this song – it would bring it out of soft rock radio obscurity into being at the forefront of popular culture, which is where it should be. Sorry for the late posting this year; we in product management are very much in demand supporting sales on the recent 2010 release and working overtime planning 2010.1, 2011 and beyond. Far more than ‘all is well’ is the mantra early in 2010. Indeed, ERDAS Rocks!

Over the last two weeks, I have been in Perth Australia and Tokyo Japan for the ERDAS Rocks 2010 Tour. The customer and prospect reception was tremendous. I discussed the history of ERDAS IMAGINE and ERDAS ER Mapper as well as the current efforts in fusing of ER Mapper, Image Compressor, and IMAGINE technologies. I also discussed the future of the technology fusing efforts, which will include LPS and new technologies we have yet to openly discuss.

Chris Tweedie discussed the current stage of ERDAS APOLLO and the fusing of ERDAS IWS technology into ERDAS APOLLO. During his demo in both Perth and Tokyo, the audience was amazed at the speed ERDAS APOLLO served imagery and vectors. He did such a good job a PO for ERDAS APOLLO was waiting on us when we arrived in the Perth ERDAS office the following morning.

In Tokyo, the audience had thought web services were supposed to be slow, that slow was the nature web services. Were they every pleasantly surprised; their questions and comments showed a new interest in web services. And to think, what we have in development is faster than what we demoed live in Perth and Tokyo!

To my Chinese friends, Happy New Year! The year of the Tiger is off to a roaring start for ERDAS.

A couple of noteworthy 3D-related items:

• Beautiful 3D model of the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort: CyberCity 3D, who we mentioned yesterday for their 3D coverage in Chula Vista, has revealed a 3D model of the Sheraton Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The quality of the building is quite remarkable. I like that they include trees in there, and I hope that someday soon Google will find a way to put 3D trees all over the earth. You can view the resort by using this KML file.

• Weekly 3D release from the 3D Warehouse: It doesn't appear that there are any new cities this time, but they've added more models that users have built using SketchUp and Building Maker. Check and see if your creations are in there!

Simone Giannecchini: Geoserver continuous map wrapping!

Recently one of our clients has provided us with the funding to address an issue with the Geoserver rendering core module that was preventing us from drawing polygons crossing the dateline change, or, to put it another way, to be able to have maps that were wrapping like continuous wrapped maps from Google.

Our specific use case is also quite challenging on its own since we need to use a projection in which the dateline change has been moved away from the usual -180/+180 by using a non standard central meridian
The result, prior to the work described here, does not look so good across the discontinuity, as shown below

The problem was that GeoServer was performing point by point reprojections, therefore when a point was crossing the dateline the modular math used kicked in trasforming +181 -> -179. This meant that the next point, when crossing the dateline, was moved to the other side of the world.

In order to perform proper processing of projection singularities and dateline wrapping on selected projections, in particular, Mercator, Transverse Mercator, and flat geographic, we have had to do some work at the GeoTools level, modifying the renderer. The outcome is that we finally have obtained seamless wrapping maps similar to the Google ones, as shown here:

You can try this work yourself starting from GeoTools 2.5.x and above and GeoServer 1.7.7 and 2.0.1. On the development versions of the two seoftware the tweak is automatically applied while on the other side for the stable versions you need to specify two JVM options:
-DADVANCED_PROJECTION_ HANDLING=true
-DUSE_STREAMING_RENDERER=true

A new startup from Croatie has just arrived online and offer us a very nice new option for Gis web apps: GISCloud. According to Dino Ravnić (Owner, CEO) Omnisdata main operation business model is software-as-a-Service ( SaaS ) in form of free or commercial services . By being the first of its kind(Gis) in the Cloud supply Omnisdata be well positioned to achieve success, because they pushing the limits of “Gis web desktop”.

With GISCloud, you have a free access to standard mapping features. You have also for free, a new tool to build and publish a map of your GeoData in a OGC Web map services. Of cours, if you wanted more, you have a pricing option for analysis and editing geodata according of your storage and network bandwidth needs. Mr. Ravnić assured me that “price list will be available and publicly when ready”.

The website is very intuitive and easy to use. In a seconds, you can open a free account, upload data into the Cloud and build a map without effort. The interface is simple to use, efficient and the display process is very fast(tiling process). We have access to a toolbar rather simplistic but effective.

After creating a Workspace , you can create a map in which we will add layers.

To do my first little test, I uploaded a shapefile coverage Ocean from Natural Earth . But Surprise! The configuration options for the layers are very well. You can easily edit apperance layer and even have access to advanced display options. There was even an option to refresh a dataset in regular frequency.

This free tool is really simple and interesting because it allows a Geomatics specialist to provide fast and cheap new option for our users.

The second part shows the sharing and the use of Web Map Service, and the Data privacy issue and security needs with your GISCloud account

Leica announced at SPAR 2010 that they would be reselling MicroSurvey’s new PointCloud CAD mapping software on a global basis. MicroSurvey has been around since the early days of PC CAD. Based in British Columbia they have a loyal customer base, primarily in the surveying community. They, along with Carlson software are preferred over Civil 3D by many of the smaller surveying firms.

The new PointCloud CAD software was developed by MicroSurvey using Leica Geosystems’ point cloud engine (pcE) technology to efficiently manage large laser scan data sets from any scanner or aerial Lidar as users process point cloud data into mapping elements in the software’s final deliverables. The product is planned to be available from Leica Geosystems Feb. 15, 2010.

This is in addition to the announcement concerning a partnership with INOVx. Is there a trend developing here?
