15:20 Google bets on quality content
sur NavxIn a bold move, Google announced yesterday that it had acquired Zagat, the famous US Restaurnant guide.
Zagat's guides rely on user-generated content (consumer reviews) which are monitored and edited by a team of experts.
This news is not surprising. As we explained recently, quality content can only be produced through combining various sources of information (including user-generated content), automated algorithms and manual work. At NAVX, we implement these types of processes in what we call a Content Factory, relying on a scalable platform, an efficient Content Management System and a team of content specialists.
The acquisition of Zagat shows that Google is serious about content quality.

14:38 Google not good enough
sur NavxMaps and geolocalisation allowed for the huge success of personal navigation devices, then became a standard feature in smartphones, and are now getting embedded directly in cars.
Maps and navigation software are nowadays pretty good in most of Europe and the USA. However, finding a point of interest (e.g. a shop, theater, gas station, parking, etc) is still very adventurous: the place will often have changed name, or closed down, maybe moved to a different address. Or new places will have appeared and won't show up on the map. And the geolocalisation will be wrong.
Providing reliable points of interest on a map is therefore critical to a growing number of applications and devices.
In this respect, Google Maps is not good enough, as reported by the New York Times here.
This is why some companies, including NAVX, run a Content Factory. The factory collects and verifies information about points of interest, not only using smart algorithms but also relying on a team of specialists and operators who interact directly with brands, shops and other outlets.
Building and running a Content Factory has a cost, but can be done in a scalable way, allowing to produce best-in-class content for the satisfaction of customers.

14:42 NAVX operates Parkinfo in France
sur Navx
NAVX has been selected by the French Parking Association (Fédération Nationale des Métiers du Stationnement, FNMS), to run Parkinfo, the only Parking Information service in France. The FNMS regroups major parking companies such as Vinci, Qpark, Effia, etc.
Parkinfo by NAVX will provide information about the location, services and real-time availability of parks in France.
Parking information is a value-add to navigation: it allows car drivers to find a park, select one which is not full, estimate the price, etc. An example of application is NAVX's iPhone app Parking Dispo.

0:07 Speedcam warning systems ban: for our French readers
0:03 French government intends to ban speedcam warning systems
sur NavxOn May 11, the French government announced it would ban speedcam warning systems (see here). The decision is part of a set of measures intended to decrease the number of accidents on French roads.
Without debating the pros and cons of such a decision, we think banning speedcam warning systems is likely to fail on a legal standpoint.
The exchange of information is indeed protected by the French Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. Passing a law that restrict freedom of expression or freedom to receive and transmit information is therefore likely to fail. There are certainly other ways to prevent drivers from speeding up, than restricting basic human rights: increase the number of speedcams, move mobile speedcam faster from one location to the other, install "radars tronçons" (radar which calculates an average speed between 2 measurement points), use unmarked cars and motorcycles. This is the Sword versus Shield debate !

19:25 PRESS RELEASE : The French Competition Authority orders Google to restore NAVX’s Adwords account
sur NavxParis, June 30th, 2010. Navx, a French corporation based near Paris, announced today that the French Competition Authority has made preliminary finding that Google conducted itself with lack of transparency and discrimination by brutally terminating its Adwords contract. The Authority ordered Google to restore NAVX’s Adwords account within 5 days.
Google had terminated its Adwords contract with NAVX in November 2009 without prior notice, and since then refused to display Navx’s advertisements. Google had argued that NAVX’s speedcam location service violated Adwords’ policy, even if such a service is fully legal in France.
In its landmark decision, the French Competition Authority grants Navx interim measures, demanding that Google reactivate Navx’s advertisements within 5 days, and clarify the conditions of the Adwords service within 4 months.
The French Competition Authority ruling is a breakthrough for all Internet players, as it recognizes the existence of keyword advertising market, a market where Google might hold a dominant position.
«This is a major victory for all companies selling products and services on the Internet, and potentially victim of such a behaviour », says Jean Cherbonnier, CEO of Navx. « From now on, all companies should be treated fairly by Google ».

1:36 The value of navigation
sur NavxTCS announced today the acquisition of Networks in Motion (NIM) for $170 millions. This news comes just as the navigation industry is meeting in San Jose at the Navigation & Location conference, pondering the impact of Google's new and free navigation application (see here).
TCS provides solutions to mobile operators, including messaging platforms, mobile applications, LBS solutions and E911 services. The acquisition of NIM will complete their offer.
This acquisition will certainly trigger hot debates between those who think that navigation is a commodity, and those who believe there is value in software, content and a good distribution model.

15:16 Finding a good restaurant with your iPhone (2)
sur NavxIn a previous post (here), we addressed the issue of finding a good restaurant using an iPhone app.
And we got frustrated after trying a number of applications. Here is why:
- Most applications help you find a place around your current geographic location. But this is not necessarily the most frequent user case. I personally would prefer to start with the kind of dinner/lunch (business, family, romantic), then the quality/price ratio, then the category of restaurant
- Besides well-known brands (Michelin, Zagat, etc) which have a standard ranking system, most applications do a poor job at recommending a place: there are often very few comments, and no guarantee we can trust them
- Very few apps provide you with details about opening hours and days
- None of the apps we tried allow you to book online
So, let's say I am looking for a nice romantic restaurant, located somewhere in Paris, and available on Sunday night. None of the apps do a good job because the filtering is based on location (my current latitude & longitude !) and there is no way to make sure I can match "Nice romantic restaurant in Paris, open on Sunday & available".
The restaurant category is still very poorly served by mobile location-based applications. And that applies to bars as well. And shops. And many others.
More about how NAVX plans to change that... soon ;-)

14:43 Bringing value to an industry threatened by commoditization
sur NavxNAVX had the pleasure to be interviewed this week by Ludovic Privat, from GPSBusinessNews. See the video here.
It was an opportunity to discuss how the geolocalization industry is transforming and is threatened by commoditization. With free maps and navigation (see our previous post on Google), we need to create more value, more differentiation.
One way to do it is to provide verified, dynamic and trusted points of interest. That's what we do at NAVX.
- Verified: the place is checked, there are no duplicates in the database and the geographic coordinates are accurate
- Dynamic: fresh, real-time information is provided, such as gas prices, parking space availability, mobile speedcam locations, etc
- Trusted: we rely on user-generated information to build trusted information and provide reliable recommendations
Stay tuned, as we'll soon be more detailed about this concept of "trusted data".
-
6:22 Google: so ?
sur NavxIt is now a week since Google announced a free turn-by-turn navigation application for Android, and the industry is still trying to evaluate the impact it will have.
The threat is still theoretical since Google application is (1) for Android only, (2) off-board and therefore not necessarily reliable, (3) only based on US maps and (4) not tested yet by anyone.
However, the potential disruption in the market is clear. We can only imagine the sort of discussion taking place at Garmin regarding the Nuvifone, at TomTom regarding their mobile strategy, at mobile operators regarding their promised LBS revenues, at Telenav regarding their announced IPO.
In the short term, we think it will clearly trigger a defensive reaction from most of the big players. We can anticipate Apple and Nokia to prevent Google from placing its navigation application on their store. By the same token, big mobile operators will probably build fences and remove Google navigation app from their Android phones.
In the long term, let's face it: navigation is becoming a commodity. Advertising will be a valid business model, specially for Google. Others will have to come up with creative business models. Smaller players will seize the opportunity and innovation will burst.
And Content will be even more critical to create differentiation. At NAVX, we like that ;-)

7:00 Finding a good restaurant with your iPhone
sur NavxImagine its your birthday, anniversary or you are celebrating a very special occasion! And for this special occasion you would like to go out to a yummy restaurant or a fancy bar with your friends. What would your first step be?
Well, last night, I was organizing a night out with friends to celebrate my birthday. To search for a great restaurant I had two options:- either go to a restaurant I already knew,
- or get a (good) suggestion
The first option didn't work out. I had no precise idea, I had left my restaurant cards at home and anyway, I wanted to discover some new place.
So, how could I get a good suggestion ?
What was important to me was to screen restaurants according to their quality, style, price, location. More importantly, I needed to trust the suggestion.
I could have opened a guide (i.e. Zagat, Michelin) or called a friend who shares my taste, or browsed a couple of web sites (i.e. Yelp, OpenTable, Qype, etc). Instead, I figured I would try using my iPhone, and I downloaded a few applications, such as:
- some apps which provide editorial content (Zagat, Michelin, I in the City)
- some which collect and monitor user-generated content (AroundMe, Qype, DisMoiOu)
Well, it didn't quiet work out and I eventually ended up calling a friend for a good suggestion (I went to MamaShelter) !
But before I tell you why I got frustrated, I'd like to ask you: do you use your iPhone or telephone to search for a restaurant ? Do you know a good iPhone app to search for a good restaurant ?

7:00 NAVX @ Navigation & Location US 2009
sur NavxNAVX will participate to Navigation & Location US 09 conference, in San Jose on December 1st and 2nd. It will be an opportunity to share our vision of the market with the main players and have fruitful debates about where the industry is heading.
We will also directly address the topic of Dynamic Points of Interest (POIs) during a panel session on December 2nd shared with Urban Mapping.
Dynamic POIs are points of interest which are linked to a real-time information, such as gas prices for a gas station, or the number of available spots for a parking lot. This dynamic data is critical for connected PNDs, as they provide useful information to end-users and allow GPS manufacturers, mobile operators and software companies to sell subscriptions.

11:33 Parking Dispo ranked 35 in the Top 50 iPhone apps!
sur NavxParking Dispo is now very popular in the iTunes charts. After only 3 weeks, Parking Dispo ranked 35 in the Top paid apps and has even been picked up by the editorial team at Apple in the New and Noteworthy section on iTunes home page!
Besides providing 1400 car parks addresses all around France, Parking Dispo is the first app able to find an available parking spot in Paris in real time directly on an iPhone & iPod touch. The community of users can even update information about the car park by simply taking and sending pictures when in the car park.
Parking Dispo is available on the iTunes App Store. -
14:21 The growth of the connected PND market
sur NavxConnected PNDs are now entering the navigation market, driven by TomTom's product line. Following their high-range products (740 and 940), the Dutch company recently introduced a mid-range TomTom XL priced at 220 euros.
It makes no doubt that the PND market will soon be split in two: on one side, cheap devices with basic functionalities, on the other side mid-high range devices loaded with connected services (e.g. live gas prices, Internet search, traffic, park space availability, etc). PND manufacturers will generate extra revenues from their connected devices through subscriptions.
So, how will the market grow ? Based on forecast published by Berg Insight, a market research company, and on our own analysis, we estimate there will be 560 000 connected devices in Europe by end 2009, and 5 millions by end 2010.
-
0:38 Connected PNDs
sur NavxAfter the boom of Personal Navigation Devices (PND) from 2004 to 2008, we have been expecting "Connected PNDs" to revive the category and bring innovative services. So, where do we stand today ?
Connected PNDs are navigation devices able to receive dynamic information, mostly through an integrated SIM card with a GPRS/3G connection.
Typical examples of dynamic information are gas prices, traffic and incident information, location of mobile speedcams, parking space availability, weather information, movie times, Internet search, etc.
We reviewed the market and listed the devices available or about to be, and there are plenty, from both big names and small start-ups :
Now that TomTom has showed the way with both mid-range and high-range connected devices, we expect other big names to follow. In a future article, we will try to estimate the market size.

11:07 NAVX interviewed by GPSBusinessNews
sur NavxWe recently had the pleasure to share our respective visions of the market with Ludovic Privat, co-founder and editor of GPSBusinessNews. Where is the market heading ? Are connected devices going to make any significant impact in 2009 ? Is geocontextual advertising ripe for growth ? How is the LBS value chain transforming ? That was indeed a good brainstorming session !
It was also an opportunity to show him what we are cooking in our labs, and to do a nice interview (here).

19:10 Find and report cheap gas stations with NAVX
sur NavxNAVX recently launched “Essence Eco”, its Gas Price application for iPhone. Available in French on iTunes’ App Store, this innovative service allows users to locate the cheapest Gas Stations around them. The service also offers the easiest way for the community of users to update prices and share them: by simply taking a picture of the gas price panel in front of the gas station !
NAVX application is indeed the first and unique service allowing users to collaborate on gas prices directly from their iPhone. We receive hundreds of pictures everyday, which our Content Management team treats immediately to update our database of gas prices. This is crowdsourcing applied to dynamic geolocalized content.
In a few days, our service entered the Top 5 most downloaded applications on the App Store, demonstrating the interest for such a collaborative tool.
The “Essence Eco” application is free and can be downloaded directly from iTunes’ App Store and will soon be available in other European countries.

17:36 Now plug & play with Garmin !
sur Navx
NAVX released today the new version of its software, allowing to automatically synchronize GPS devices with its rich database of content (speedcams, gas prices, tourist guides, etc). While our competitors provide data files that the end-user needs to manually drag and drop at the right place in their GPS, NAVX provides a no-hassle plug & play service: our NAVX Sync software manages the entire process.Among other features, the key novelty is that the new software is now compatible with Garmin. Already compatible with TomTom and Magellan, NAVX Sync covers three major brands.
Note that for the other brands, manual download works perfectly. And stay tuned: we'll soon add more brands to our automatic download !
