Spatial Intelligence: Model to Script to Tool: the "Holy Trinity"

I have been doing some work for a junior mining company recently involving creating Volume/Elevation curves (see my last post). This work is accomplished in ArcGIS using Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst which works very well but requires many steps. Over the course of this project, however, I have built a number of Python scripts that are now embedded as tools in a new toolbox in ArcMap. So I am going to take this opportunity to briefly discuss how easy it really is to create sophisticated Python geo-processing scripts in Arc and give a little example of how I recommend approaching this task.

First of all I would just like to say that ArcGIS is still the most powerful GIS in my opinion (yes I am still a fan of open source but you can't argue with the benefits of having a large budget to develop good software). I like Arc not so much for it's ability to perform the geo-processing functions but more for the ancillary tools that help you find the appropriate tools and perform these tasks. Arc has built in search capabilities and very good documentation to allow users with a wide variety of skill levels find the appropriate tools. On top of that, there is a very well developed modeling and scripting environment that gives the user the capability to reproduce these tasks in a relatively easy manner.

Ok, now that's been said lets get on with the main purpose of this post, to show how easy it is to create a tool in ArcGIS using the modeling and scripting environments. For this example I thought I'd use the volume elevation curve tool created for the project I mentioned earlier. I will be making reference to a number of steps that may not be clear if you haven't performed this analysis before but you can read my previous post for clarification.

The Model
So over the years I have found that the easiest way to start any Python scripting in Arc is to look at the modeling environment first and see if the task can be done in there. You may ask "why worry about a Python script if you can create a model", but if you need to add some iteration Figure 1: Surface volume model
to the process (e.g. performing the analysis on successive elevations), for example, then you need to do this with a script. So I started by creating the model shown in Figure 1. The key here is to notice that I have created a number of "model parameters" which will show up as argument variables (sys.argv[]) when the model is exported to Python. These arguments will allow you to attach the fields from a custom tool to them giving the user the flexibility to add their own data, assign a range of elevations to the plane height variable and specify the output location for the delimited text file. You will also notice that there are two height variables (Min Plane Height and Max Plane Height) but only one is actually attached to the model. This is because we are planing to have an iterative model that starts at the bottom of the surface (e.g. 0 cu.m volume) and works it's way up to the top. This requires that we allow the user to assign a lower value and an upper value but because this model is only a single instance of the volume command, it can take only one value. Don't worry though, we will add the iterative properties when we edit the script. Once you have the model the way you like you can export it to a Python script (Model -> Export -> To Script -> Python). Before doing this though, I suggest testing the model to ensure it works to avoid spending an unreasonable amount of time on the scripting.

The Script
Now that we have a script you can open it up in IDLE or whichever Python editing environment you like. The script will look something like Figure 2 after it is first exported.

Let's run through the components of this script. First of all you have to import the Python libraries necessary to run this script. In this case it is the system (sys), string, operating system (os) and ArcScripting (arcgisscripting) libraries. Right after this you need to create the geoprocessing object that will do the bull work (gp). Next you need to check out the extension(s) required for the type of geoprocessing to be done. In this case we only need 3D Analysist. Then we asign the different arguments to there own reusable variables (e.g. Output_Text_File = sys.argv[1] which assigns the name of the output file, as provided by the user, to it's own variable). In our example we do the same for the input dam containment tin, the lower plane height and the upper plane height. You may find that you need to change the order in which these arguments appear so that the tool variables can be placed in a logical order. So if you want the input TIN to be first followed by the lowest plane height then highest plane height and finally the output text file name then you need to ensure that you set the index number for the sys.argv[] object accordingly. Finally we run the Surface Volume_3D function using the geo-processing object we created earlier.

This script will do most of the work we need, however, we need to create a loop that will iterate through all the elevation changes needed to create a proper VE Curve. In most cases 9 - 12 points are adequate to create a VE Curve in Excel so we will create a loop that creates 9 points.

You can see here how we have set up a variable for the plane height and calculated it by finding the elevation difference between highest and lowest values and then dividing that by 9 (number of points for the curve). Then we create another variable to represent the current plane height (initially equal to the lowest elevation in the containment TIN). Next we set up a loop that iterates through 9 times for which we calculate the volume below the reference plane and increase it's height each iteration by the Height_Interval. In the end we have a script that, given some user input for each of the variables, will calculate a volume elevation curve and append each value to an output text file.

Creating a ToolNow that we have the script the way we want it we need to create an ArcToolbox tool. We do this by simply importing it. I recommend adding a new Toolbox first by right clicking on the root of the ArcToolbox window and selecting New Toolbox. You should make sure to give the toolbox an appropriate name so that it is obvious what it contains. Next create a new toolset by right clicking on the new toolbox and selecting New -> Toolset. Finally, add your newly created script by right clicking on the new toolset and selecting Add - > Script, after which you will navigate to the location of your script. Once the script is added you will need to assign parameters to it so that the user can update the variables when the double click on it (see Figure 2). You get to this dialog by right clicking on the script and selecting Properties then click on the Parameters tab. You can add each parameter to the script in the logical order set out in your script.

Remember that the order the parameters show in this dialog is the order they are passed to your code. This means that the first parameter showing here will be accessed in your code through the sys.argv[1] system variable.

You will also need to make sure that you update all the Parameter Properties such as ensuring input and output data sets are assigned accordingly and that Dependencies are also assigned. This last one comes into play in situations such as the requirement to select from a list of fields.
Now when you double click on the script in the toolbox you should see a dialog something like that shown in Figure 3.

Now you should have a workable tool that will produce a volume elevation curve from an existing containment TIN. The intent of this post is not to show you how to do VE Curves but to give you a starting point for creating your own custom script based tools in ArcGIS. Hope you find it useful.

It's All About Data: The Future Looks Bright for SpatialLite

This blog has covered the wonderful SpatiaLite database several times. To quickly review, SpatiaLite is a full-blown spatial database, complete with not only with spatial data types, but also with spatial predicates, and an OGC Simple Features for SQL implementation (think PostGIS). It also includes support for raster data and routing support, all implemented in an SQLite database so the whole database can be emailed to a colleague, or embedded into applications.

This format had me very excited since I first heard about it 2 and a half years ago, as a potential replacement for the Shapefile, but I was personally holding back a bit since FME had no way of reading or writing spatial data in it. I was very pleased to see that there is now an FDO provider for SpatiaLite (Massive hat tip to Jason Birch for alerting me to this and to Haris Kurtagic of SL-King for creating the FDO provider).

This means that while there is no official SpatiaLite reader or writer for FME (yet) you can still read and write any of over 255 data formats to SpatialLite by using FME’s FDO Providers Reader/Writer. The setup is a manual process for now, but a wrapper to make this a standard FME format is on the way. If this process sounds familiar, you may have used this method to use SQLite Spatial (an alternative spatial extension of SQLite). For those playing along at home, we quickly wrapped Jason’s steps into a first class FME format.

So why am I so excited about SpatiaLite? Imagine a mobile application that accesses data from a traditional spatial database like PostGIS, but can also operate offline through an embedded SpatiaLite database with no loss of functionality. In an email today to Haris about using his FDO provider through FME, I attached a sample SpatiaLite database created with FME. This file contains both data as well as database logic. What a great interchange format!

With SQLite making such great progress as a non-spatial data format, it is great to see SpatiaLite getting traction for the same reasons.

AfriSpatial: South African projections in FOSS GIS

South African users of software that depends on proj.4 are often stymied by our “LO” coordinate system. Since there are seldom predefined projections available in software like QGIS and PostGIS, we have to craft our own. This is a drawback to the local adoption of FOSS GIS. And the “Lo” coordinate systems that are defined are either incomplete or cater for the rare cases described at the end of this post.

It’s really not that complicated to get your day-to-day GIS set up for ‘LO’. What GIS users normally refer to when they think ‘LO’ is not LO at all but simply Transverse Mercator (aka Gauss Conform) on odd central meridians. So for most SA GIS cases the following will do the trick. These examples are for LO19. For other zones just substitute the 19.

In QGIS (or anywhere else you need proj4 definitions), use this string:

+proj=tmerc +lat_0=0 +lon_0=19 +k=1 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +units=m +no_defs

An equivalent EPSG string, such as you’d find in a shapefile .prj file, is:

PROJCS["Transverse_Mercator", GEOGCS["GCS_WGS_1984", DATUM["D_WGS_1984", SPHEROID["WGS_1984", 6378137, 298.257223563]], PRIMEM["Greenwich", 0], UNIT["Degree", 0.017453292519943295]], PROJECTION["Transverse_Mercator"], PARAMETER["latitude_of_origin", 0], PARAMETER["central_meridian", 19], PARAMETER["scale_factor", 1], PARAMETER["false_easting", 0], PARAMETER["false_northing", 0], UNIT["Meter", 1]]

To set up the same projection in PostGIS, you need to add a record to ‘spatial_ref_sys’ with a unique ‘srid’ (that’s my 40019 below but it can be any unique id) AND the proj4 string AND the EPSG string:

With your system thus configured, transformations, projection on the fly etc. should all work seamlessly and accurately.

You probably noticed I used WGS84 instead of the standard Hartebeesthoek datum. Well, if we look at ‘GEOGCS’ (lat-long) proj4 definitions for the datums used in South Africa we get

EPSG 4326 (WGS84): +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defs

EPSG 4148 (Hartebeesthoek94): +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 +no_defs

and for legacy data EPSG 4222 (Cape): +proj=longlat +a=6378249.145 +b=6356514.966398753 +no_defs

Note how the Hartebeesthoek definition essentially states ‘this is the same as WGS84′.

End-note: Tickets proj/ticket/18 and qgis/ticket/1176 and postgis/ticket/61 refer. Aspects of these cover cases where data really are in original surveyor’s “LO” coordinates. In those cases x and y axes AND signs are swapped and you need to use ‘south-oriented’ transverse mercator. PostGIS has these defined in spatial_ref_sys in EPSG codes 2046-2055, although the proj4text values for these records are still blank.

End-note: Tickets proj/ticket/18 and qgis/ticket/1176 and postgis/ticket/61 refer. Aspects of these cover cases where data really are in original surveyor’s “LO” coordinates. In those cases x and y axes AND signs are swapped and you need to use ‘south-oriented’ transverse mercator. PostGIS has these defined in spatial_ref_sys in EPSG codes 2046-2055, although the proj4text values for these records are still blank.

Welcome to the Friday’s Food for Thought post on got geoint? Hurricane Earl, a gunman at the Discovery Channel headquarters, Obama trying to broker peace in the Middle East…wow, lot’s happening this week. So much so, that we totally forgot about the three-day weekend that lay ahead of us. Rather than doing another Labor Day FFT post, we decided to dive a bit deeper and highlight the role our 5 (or perhaps 6) senses that we have and how our sense shape our perceptions of the world. Why this topic? Well, it’s kind of cool and hopefully it will give you some “food for thought” as you head off into the weekend.

Definition of “Sense”
Senses are the physiological capacities within organisms that provide inputs for perception. The senses and their operation, classification, and theory are overlapping topics studied by a variety of fields, most notably neuroscience, cognitive psychology (or cognitive science), and philosophy of perception. The nervous system has a specific sensory system or organ, dedicated to each sense. The traditional five senses are sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste, a classification attributed to Aristotle. Descartes’ View of Sense Perception
Some have suggested that René Descartes argues that sense perception relies on the mind rather than on the body. Descartes asserts that we can know our mind more readily than we can know our body. In support of this idea he gives the example of a piece of wax which is observed in its solid form and its liquid form. After pointing out the difficulties of relying on the senses of the physical body to understand the nature of the wax he makes this claim: “[P]erception … is neither a seeing, nor a touching, nor an imagining. … [R]ather it is an inspection on the part of the mind alone.” 1 This quote is perhaps the most direct statement of the author’s thesis on this subject. Because of the large number of people who have had such extra-sensory experiences as foreseeing the future, seeing what seemed to be spirits, and possibly reading the minds of others, there is a good probability that all humans have what is called a 6th sense. Some people seem to have it more than others. It is possible to verify that you have this sense and perhaps even improve your sensitivity to it. La dette publique est exprimée en pourcentage du PIB (Produit Intérieur Brut ) et pour chaque pays, dans sa monnaie nationale. Elle est calculée en effectuant le total cumulé des revenus (recettes fiscales…) moins les charges (emprunts, dépenses budgétaires…).

Pour répondre à la crise, la solution prônée par de nombreux états a consisté à injecter dans l’économie une grande quantité de fonds publics pour relancer la consommation et soutenir les entreprises. Cette solution a cependant contribué à aggraver leur dette publique.

Pour de nombreux grands pays industrialisés, la dette publique atteint aujourd’hui un niveau record. Alors que de nombreux pays parlent de désendettement et que les médias parlent de la reprise ou de la sortie de la Crise, on peut s’interroger sur la capacité des différentes nations à remonter la pente et assainir leurs finances publiques.

Pour évaluer l'ampleur de la dette pour certains états, il est intéressant de la comparer au PIB. En effet, elle représente souvent une part non négligeable du PIB, elle dépasse même le montant de celui-ci pour les états ayant atteint un niveau d’endettement très élevé. Si cette situation est connue de longue date pour certains pays, comme le Japon (189,3 % du PIB), de nombreuses grandes puissances se trouvent maintenant parmi les pays les plus endettés (cf. Top 20 des pays les plus endettés).

While putting together my Intro to Mapping lecture, I remembered this great 6-minute video introduction to the National Map, including a little bit about the history of the USGS’s role in mapping the US, how digital technologies are changing mapping, and the development of the National Map and its functionality. Even if you saw the video when it came out back in January, it’s still a great reference for what the National Map is all about.

Here is a useful site for anyone house-hunting in Germany. ihood is a website that can help you find out about a German neighbourhood. It can also help you check out the social status of your neighbours.

ihood uses Google Maps to help users explore the social environment of an area, such as purchasing power, education levels and professional status. The map also contains local points of information with user reviews.

When you search for an address with ihood.de you are shown the location on a Google Map. The map includes small markers over every house. If you click on an individual house you can view the house's social status on the ihood social thermometer.

There is obviously great fun to be had here in checking out how ihood rates the social status of your neighbours. Are you brave enough however to check out your own ihood social ranking?

John sent me an email last week telling me about a new project he's working on, and it's quite cool -- he calles it anotherearth. He explains it as follows:

This application gives you a number of tools with which you can easily and comprehensively compare two views of the Earth, using the Google Earth browser plugin. These include the ability to synchronize the movement of two Earths, select layers such as buildings, roads and borders for the Earths, jump to locations of your choice, undo/redo any movements, and save coordinates as a URL.

The controls are very fluid, and there are a lot of excellent potential uses for it. You can try it for yourself at anotherearth.org. What are some neat things you can do with it?

John has plans to add more features in the future, making the tool even more useful. If it were up to you, what kind of features would you add to it?

Tripline's Use of Google Geo APIs

The Google Geo Developers Blog has a great guest post from Byron Dumbrill, Founder & CEO of Tripline. Tripline was one of my Maps of the Week last month.

Tripline allows anyone to easily create an embeddable interactive Google Map of a journey or trip. I particularly like how the map uses animated lines to connect each stage of a user created trip. In the Geo Developers Blog post Byron discusses how Tripline decided to use the Google Maps API for Flash as the best platform to combine the maps, the animations and soundtrack elements in Tripline.

Byron says that another advantage of using the Google Maps API for Flash is that it makes the created maps easy to share. One of the great features of Flash files is that they are easily embeddable (e.g. YouTube videos). The embedded Flash files also contain a full-screen option that can also greatly enhance the user experience.

The lesson for other Google Maps developers is that if you want your users to be able to embed your maps then you should seriously consider using the Google Maps API for Flash.

Tracking Hurricane Earl with Google Maps

iMap weather is tracking the path of Hurricane Earl. The map also includes a great animated radar layer that shows the extent of the hurricane.

Hurricane Earl Tweets

Mibazaar has used his Tweet mapping template to produce a Google Map of Tweets about Hurricane Earl. As the hurricane progresses north along the east coast today I expect this map could get very busy.

Ibiseye
Ibiseye use Google Maps to show the path of Hurricane Earl. One very useful feature of Ibiseye is that users are able to click on points along the projected path of the hurricane and find out how close it will be, at that point, to the nearest towns and cities.

StormAdvisory
StormAdvisory use Google Maps to show the track and projected track of hurricanes. The map currently shows Hurricane Earl as an H4 category storm. StormAdvisory also features a news ticker of the latest hurricane news.

Wundermap
Wundermap are also using Google Maps to show the path of Hurricane Earl.

The MapFish community is proud to announce MapFish 2.0!

The highlights of the release are:

* MapFish 2 comes with GeoAlchemy, and uses GeoAlchemy internally. Among other things, this brings MapFish support for PostGIS as well as Spatialite, MySQL, and Oracle Spatial. See to know more about
GeoAlchemy.
* MapFish 2 is based on Pylons 1.0, the first stable version of Pylons.
* the API of MapFish 2 is incompatible with that of MapFish 1.2, see to know how to migrate your applications.
* the client plugin installs OpenLayers 2.9.1, and GeoExt 0.7 in the application, and does not longer install MapFish Client.

Yesterday much of the D.C. area was watching a stand-off between James J. Lee and police at Discovery Channel’s Headquarters just outside of Washington D.C. I found out about the incident as I get most of my news, through Twitter. I was interested in seeing if people were actually tweeting about the incident from the area. Lately I’ve been playing with location searches in the Twittering Stream API, so I set a search for a bounding box around Silver Spring. I started the query around 2pm (an hour after things started) and ran it until 8 a.m. when I got into work today.

There were a couple interesting things about the data. Nobody was tweeting with location enabled directly from the Discovery Channel, though one person checked into the Discovery Channel on FourSquare about the time that the stand-off ended.

There was also a decent amount of pictures of the Police SWAT vehicles as well. Investigate here yourself.
