Andrea Antonello: Geopaparazzi 2.6.0 is out - OSM, Mixare and GeoSMS

We just released Geopaparazzi 2.6.0 to the market.

I was really looking forward to this release because it contains a ton of new stuff some were expecting. Let's try to see some of it.

1) Openstreetmap support

This is likely the most important change for this version. We now have the possibility to create OSM points of interest and synchronize them with the OSM accoutn online.

First one has to activate OSM support in the preferences:

If OSM support is activated, once geopaparazzi restarts, the user is prompted to download the OSM tags. This is a library of symbols and definitions of OSM tags.

The map view will then prefsent a small OSM-logo handle at the right side of the map. If that one is pulled, it shows the OSM categories available.

Entering one of the category, the various tags are presented:

And when selected, the user gets the form with the definition of the selected tag. Once filled out and pressed ok at the bottom of the form, the point is saved and kept ready for upload to OSM.

From the categories view one can upload the OSM points to his account. The application just askes for a description for the changeset it is going to upload.

If the user and password were inserted properly in the preferences, geopaparazzi will connect to a WPS service written and made available by Luca Delucchi. The WPS will take care to upload the points to the defined OSM account. A big thanks goes to Luca, who helped me to understand the necessary OSM internals. He alos wrote the actual WPS service, made it available for all geopaparazzi users and also prepared the OSM tags library.

2) OGC GeoSMS support

This version has support for the recently released OGC GeoSMS specification. This works in two ways: for sending geosms, but also for incoming geosms.

The sms preferences allow to "enable sms catcher", which will handle incoming geosms, while the panic number is instead the number that will be used to send geosms to.

Let's start with outgoing geosms'. Geopaparazzi has the bottom "panic" bar. From there a user can send a panic message, which will send to the configured number a geosms containing the positions following OGC specs and a message asking for help. There is a second button that can be used to send a customized geosms. It will ask the user for a cutom text to add to the location definition.

What happens instead when a GeoSMS is recieved? If the catcher is enabled in the settings, geopaparazzi will parse the incoming message and recognize the GeoSMS format. It will notify the user that such a message has arrived:

The notification makes it then possible to open the GeoSMS with one of the available applications on the phone, that can handle the position information.

So once selected the notification:

And opening it for example with a well know application we can see that I was preparing some screenshots for my talk at the Italian GRASS and GFOSS user meeting in Trieste:

3) augmented reality with mixare

In this version we added the ability to view all points of interest contained in the current geopaparazzi view in mixare. I already described the feature in this post.
The entry point is the menu in the map view:

4) create a new project

While this has been a bit odd in the past, it now follows a more natural workflow. You are asked for the name of the new project and geopaparazzi creates the project and loads it.

5) bookmarks

One this I was missing, was a very easy way to add bookmarks to geopaparazzi. So we added a check on the presence of a bookmarks.csv file in the project folder (by default geopaprazzi). If the file is there and it contains points in the form:

Grassday Trieste,45.65844,13.79320

those points will be loaded in the application and appear in the bookmarks list.

This feature lead me to have a ton of bookmarks and defined the need for a way to filter them. So the bookmarks list now has a textfield that filters the bookmarks by name:

6) center on gps

After having risked to make car accidents just to pan while driving in order to have the actual position visible, we added a function to have the gps alwasy inside the current window, through automatic panning. It can be switched on in the gps preferences:

7) enhanced charting with zoom to markers

Just to remind that one, I wrote already here about it.

8) osmdroid doesn't kill tiles any more

Some developers from the osmdroid (the engine we use to display the maps) community finally solved the bug that in certain low memory conditions were killing all the OSM tiles, leaving the user with no more maps. This was one of the worst bugs ever, since it had happend to several user that they found themself out in the field with no network and no more maps. This has now finally been solved!!!

9) possibility to use network based position

This was asked by several users so we thought we could add it. In the setting it is now possible to ask geopaparazzi to use network based position definition instead of GPS based. Even if I do not like it that much, I agree that it is handy sometimes.

That's more or less it.

This release hides a very important change under the hood, since we split the geopaparazzi project into two pieces in order to foster reusability. Many key features of geopaparazzi have been taken into a separate library project. This project can be used to build in an easier way new applications.

We now decided to release this version, since the OSM tools will need some community testing and also the library issue might need some testing. Also the documentation will need a good update. As usual help is always welcome! :)

Install the application from the market or download it from the project download area. Play with it, test it, send us feedback. If you have questions join our mailinglist.

Prodevelop: Playing around with Leaflet and POIProxy

I've been some time following Leaflet and this weekend I've decided to write some code on it. So as Leaflet has no tiled GeoJSON layer I've coded a layer to load points from POIProxy, draw them over the map and show a popup.

Of course it can be improved, at the moment only loads points at zoom level 16, the layers are exclusive to avoid overload and there are several bugs… but as a proof of concept, it's not bad :P

About Leaflet, I like several things. Its API is simple and lightweight and that's the point, it's incredibly fast on mobile devices. Apart from this, there are several interesting layers such as CartoDB that look promising :)

By the way I've uploaded a POIProxy demo that runs on desktop and mobile :) and the code is at my Github

Este post en el geomatic va a ser un poco diferente. Hace unos días tuvo lugar una especie de Mapping Party global y nocturna, la Noche de los Mapas Vivientes en los que entusiastas de OpenStreetMap de todo el mundo decidieron pasar una noche mapeando o experimentando sobre OSM. En Valencia la noche la pasamos Rafa y yo en su casa, ya que pese a intentarlo en un par de grupos de la comunidad no hubo mucho éxito de convocatoria. He pensado que sería buena idea que este post lo escribiéramos entre los dos, a cuatro manos vaya. Sirva también este post para romper una sequía de casi 5 meses en el blog….

Hola Rafa, creo que esta crónica hay que empezarla por una pequeña presentación de quién eres tú. Rafa, así en breve es un geoinquieto muy activo en redes sociales (@raolbaletco) y apasionado de la cartografía, el open data y las ciudades sostenibles. Rafa es uno de los principales dinamizadores de Geoinquietos Valencia y ha sido clave para que este grupo del que ya hablaremos en otra ocasión arranque con fuerza en nuestra ciuadad. Venga vamos a empezar.

¿cómo te enteraste de esta iniciativa y qué te pareció en un primer momento?

Todo comenzó desde Twitter en mi caso, a partir de la cuenta española @openstreetmapes y algún comentario entrecruzado de Ivan Sánchez @RealIvanSanchez y tu perfil en Twitter @xurxosanz sobre el tema. Desde que empezamos a mover Geoinquietos Valencia mis ganas de descubrir nuevos servicios y nuevas oportunidades #geo han crecido día a día y tras los anuncios de Google Maps y mis ideas sobre #opendata me parecía un buen momento para reconectar, contribuir y dar mi granito de arena a la comunidad. Openstreetmap.org lo conozco desde principios de 2008 cuando me lo introdujeron y me interesé por aquel entonces de forma esporádica..

Detrás de ese logo de zombie pensaba que habría monotonía y poco movimiento, pero nada más lejos de la realidad: Entre la cafeína, una conversación interesante, horas y muy buen ambiente nos fuimos animando hasta tal punto que no queríamos parar aunque el día siguiente en el trabajo nos recomendaba descansar unas horas. Terminó siendo una gran noche.

¿Tenías alguna idea ya pensada para cartografiar para el evento?

Pues tenía varias ideas. Por un lado seguir con la edición de una zona que apenas comencé en una sesión anterior en otro grupo de inquietos. La reunión se llevó a cabo en una zona casi sin cubrir en OSM así que en un hueco de aquel día le dediqué unos minutos. De eso hacía algo más de un mes y me apetecía darle un poco más de cariño a esa zona y así lo hice (changeset). Por otro lado me apetecía probar los scripts de conversión de Catastro a OSM aunque al final me emocioné con la edición pura y dura sobre ortofoto y no hice esas pruebas sino que me dediqué a dibujar las calles de Benifaió (changeset), un pueblo cercano a Valencia que no existía en OSM todavía.

¿Y tú, qué tal fue tu noche, a qué dedicaste las horas?

Un pequeño inciso antes de responder: Esta pregunta llega tras haberse celebrado la 3a Reunión de Geoinquietos Valencia tratando temas de Tilemill de Mapbox entre otros donde Pedro-Juan @vehrka comentó sobre la agenda de la 4a y la introducción a OSM mediante JOSM dónde se preguntó si la gente lo conocía y no todos lo conocían.

Pues tras el inciso he de comentar que yo hasta ahora lo había ido revisando desde web con el editor Potlach que ofrecen tras identificarte dentro de OpenStreetMap. Había estado revisando los diferentes programas que corrían con OSM para temas de topología cuando os pregunté a Iván y a ti por GPS para senderismo y posterior edición pero no me había puesto a editar desde JOSM hasta esa noche. Mi primera hora tras tener todo listo en mi Mac OSX fue descubrir las librerías y cómo moverme con el programa, averiguando que el botón preferencias no estaba situado como en otros SO.

Las siguiente hora la dediqué a conocer las etiquetas introduciendo metadatos sobre servicios para la bicicleta en el centro de Valencia (changeset), y conociendo la gran cantidad de usuarios que editan y añaden más valor a los mapas que vamos creando la comunidad. Cuando ya me vi con mayor soltura y tras ver que la gente se iba moviendo pensé en dónde podía dejar mi granito de arena esa noche. Pensé en muchas localizaciones pero tenía una espina clavada tras ver a mi primo Ignacio en “Españoles en el Mundo” y decidí comprobar si Google tenía datos de una de las ciudades donde ha estado, Barcelos. Cuál fue mi sorpresa que no tenía apenas datos y me decidí a vectorizar a partir de una fotografía aérea de Bing. Los resultados se pueden ver en una comparativa realizada con Geofabrik Tools. Os invito a mejorarlo, la experiencia fue muy gratificante y en el Amazonas hay muchísimo por hacer

¿Alguna idea para conseguir más adeptos para la siguiente?

Supongo que más preparación, darle más difusión en twitter, escribir algún post en un blog de calentamiento, preguntar directamente a más geoinquietos potenciales, en el trabajo, etc. La suerte era que teníamos sitio ofrecido por beCode, una empresa valenciana, pero al final no aprovechamos la oportunidad que nos brindaron. ¡¡Seguro que hay más oportunidades!!

¿Crees que hay algún colectivo en el que conseguir colaboradores que no estemos ateniendo? ¿Algún grupo de geoinquietos por despertar?

Tras revisar los editores de OSM en la ciudad de Valencia ví que algunos eran activos también en Twitter y en Facebook, las dos redes que más usuarios mueven en mi entorno. Sería como bien dices Jorge, potenciar ese campo pero también algunos foros técnicos que hay en la red incluso en servicios móviles como Wikiloc. Otro colectivo que puede interesarle es a los estudiantes de la UPV en general y de la UV sobre todo en Geografía… es una gran oportunidad para ellos.

Para la próxima doblaremos los esfuerzos para ser más. Un taller sobre OSM en Geoinquietos Valencia y publicidad en los tablones puede hacer que esta noche vaya ganando adeptos.

¿Crees que es un nuevo impulso de openstreetmap.org para motivar a la comunidad tras la adopción de las nuevas licencias ODbL?

Desde luego ha sido una buena oportunidad para difundir el proyecto en general y demostrar que tras el proyecto hay un sólido grupo de gente entusiasta y que está más vivo que nunca. La ODbL es el fruto de un trabajo muy serio para conseguir una licencia válida y legal sin margen de duda, para publicar datos geográficos siguiendo estrechamente lo que entendemos como Open Data.

Una última pregunta para cerrar ¿repetirás el año que viene?

Vega paré pour son premier vol

Encadré par les 4 mats destinés à le protéger de la foudre, le premier lanceur européen Vega s’apprête à marcher sur les traces de son illustre prédécesseur, Ariane 1.Le pas de tir de Vega (Vecteur Européen de Génération Avancée) en Guyane a en effet été édifié à l’emplacement même où, le 24 décembre 1979, s’élançait avec succès le tout premier lanceur européen.

Des installations initiales, seules les infrastructures en béton ont été conservées, dont le carneau visible au premier plan qui canalisera les gaz issus de l’allumage du premier étage.

Sur la droite de l’image, on distingue le portique mobile, haut de 44 m et pesant 1100 t, dans lequel les différents étages de Vega ainsi que ses charges utiles ont été assemblés au cours de la campagne de lancement.

Le vol inaugural de Vega aura lieu lundi 13 février entre 11h et 13h heure de Paris.

Tout au long du développement de Vega, la Direction des lanceurs du CNES est intervenue à plusieurs titres pour le compte de l’ESA, notamment afin de piloter le développement du P80, le 1er étage de Vega, et comme assistant à maîtrise d’ouvrage pour les aménagements du pas de tir.

À l’heure actuelle, le CNES assure la responsabilité de chef d’établissement pour cette première campagne.

[Le blog SIG & URBA] La révolution DT/DICT

Les dates butoir de la réforme des DT/DICT arrivent à grand pas. De nombreux services publics sont concernés et en première ligne les services techniques, les services SIG et les services urbanisme.Cette réforme vise globalement à améliorer le dispositif actuel pour tous les travaux à proximité des réseaux. Il s’agit de sécuriser au maximum les personnes et d’améliorer la prévention d’endommagement des réseaux en amont des travaux. La réforme porte sur les "DT", déclarations de travaux qui remplacent les "DR", demandes de renseignement, et sur les DICT, Déclaration d’Intention de Commencement des travaux.

Le dispositif repose sur trois points clefs:
1. La création d’un guichet unique [www.reseaux-et-canalisations.gouv.fr] )
2. La refonte et l’abrogation du décret 91-1147 du 14 octobre 1991 relatif à l’exécution de travaux de proximité d’ouvrage
3. Et enfin fédérer, sensibiliser et promouvoir les bonnes pratiques via un observatoire national.
Tout le monde, particulier ou professionnel, est concerné par cette réforme … à partir du moment où un trou de 40 cm de profondeur est creusé.

Réseaux et réseaux ...
Les 4 millions de réseaux implantés en France n’ont pas tous la même valeur …et l’on peut les classer suivant leurs structures (aérienne ou enterrés / subaquatiques) et leurs niveaux de sécurité (sensibles ou autres).
Concernant les réseaux sensibles (environ 1,5 Millions de km) pour la sécurité on retrouve par exemples les réseaux électriques, gaz, matières dangereuses, ferroviaires et de chaleur, … Ceci étant, tous les autres réseaux (environ 2,4 millions de km) sont également très impactant pour l’économie et les usagers en général (ex : communications électroniques, eau, assainissement, …).

Les principaux objectifs de la réforme.
Le dispositif actuel est renforcé par l’identification instantanée et gratuite des exploitants à n’importe quel endroit du territoire clairement déterminé, l’implication des Maîtrises d’ouvrage et des personnes physiques dans les procédures de DT, la généralisation de la dématérialisation des procédures d’échange et enfin l’explicitation des informations fournies par les exploitants ( localisation et incertitude de localisation des réseaux, des consignes d’utilisation, l’échelle et la légende sur les plans, …). Cette réforme introduit la notion de niveau de précision de manière à bien qualifier et fiabiliser les informations.

Concrêtement, la réforme se présente en trois étapes :
1. Les gestionnaires de réseaux doivent d'abord s'inscrire sur le guichet unique en précisant leurs périmètres de compétence c'est à dire l'emprise géographique de leur intervention, un simple contour qui sera souvent à l'échelle communale. L'objet est de recenser les gestionnaires par zone. Cette première étape doit se faire au plus tard le 30 mars 2012
2. L'étape suivante consiste à fournir de premières données sur les réseaux, données qui doivent être positionnées à 10 m près. L'échéance est ixi fixée à juin 2013. Notons que l'usage du guichet unique est facultatif au delà de l'obligation d'inscription comme gestionnnaire.
3. Dernière étape, à compter du 1er juillet 2012, l'indication obligatoire dans les plans fournis en réponse aux DT/DICT de la classe de précision de chacun des tronçons situés dans l'emprise des travaux prévus.
Les dates repères.
31 Mars 2012 : Ouverture complète du guichet unique et date limite pour l'enregistrement des gestionnaires de réseaux.
1er juillet 2012 : Application de la nouvelle procédure DT-DICT.
1er janvier 2013 : Application des sanctions administratives.
Jusqu’au 30 juin 2013 : Obligation de maintenir la transmission et la mise à jour des plans de zonages des réseaux par leurs exploitants aux mairies.

Les différents acteurs sont classés ainsi : le responsable du projet, l’exploitant de réseau et l’exécutant des travaux. Les collectivités sont concernée à trois titres :
- d'une part pour les réseaux qu'elles exploitent en régie et pour lesquels elles doivent remplir les obligations des exploitants qui consistent à fournir des informations précises sur leurs réseaux,
- d'autre part pour les réseaux qui sont confiés à des prestataires sous forme de délégation de service public, les collectivités doivent s'assurer que leurs délégataires répondent à ces nouvelles obligations,
- enfin en tant que maître d'ouvrage de projets, qui devra consulter le guichet unique pour connaître la liste des concessionnaires et devra procéder à des investigations complémentaires dans le cas de données de classe B et C, moyennement ou peu précises, et de travaux sur des réseaux sensibles.
Des expérimentations de la réforme ont lieu actuellement dans les villes d’Orléans et de Perpignan afin de valider les modes opérationnels d’exécution, l’utilisation des formulaires cerfa, notices d’utilisation, etc …

Cette réforme met donc le SIG au coeur des procédures de travaux et doit rapidement déboucher sur une couverture numérique complète des réseaux concernés.
Elle valorise dans le même temps le travail de précision engagé par de nombreuses collectivités en France, gage d'une sécurisation des travaux réalisés et à terme d'une meilleure qualité des interventions réalisées sur le territoire, bien qu'à court terme une augmentation des coûts semble probable.

Google Maps of the Week

The stand-out map of the last week has to be Blocky Earth, a fabulous WebGL experiment using the Google Maps API to show a 3d representation of the Earth.

To view the map you will probably need to use the Chrome browser as Blocky Earth uses canvas and WebGL to render locations representing terrain and elevation with cubic blocks. The map includes a search option so you can choose to view any location on the Earth.

The map also has options to zoom in and out, rotate the map and to view it in full-screen mode.

I really shouldn't claim one of my own maps as one of the best of the week. Especially when this map is still far from perfect but ... IT'S STREET VIEW ON MARS!

Martian Street View uses panoramas of Mars captured from NASA's Mars' missions with the Custom Panorama function in the Google Maps API to help you take a virtual walk on the moon.

Weather Underground's WunderMap now allows the user to view historical weather records on a Google Map.

A calendar control above the map allows the user to select a date and view the historical weather records for that day. The records include radar, storm reports and even weather related photographs and webcam images taken on that day.

With the next release of Maestro, now you can actually find out

The View Changes command lets you see the XML content changes of the currently edited resource

You also have the opportunity to view the XML diff when you try to close an editor tab with unsaved changes

Now those of you with a keen eye may notice some false positives in the first 2 lines.
- The XML prolog is missing the encoding attribute
- The root element has its attributes specified in a different order.
It means our XML serialization code is somewhat imperfect, something that I wouldn't have known without a tool like this. Nevertheless, this new tool will let you make a more informed decision when you need to save a modified resource.

Many thanks to Michael Potter for the public domain implementation of the .net diff engine and UI which is the backbone of this new feature.

- cartographier ces données et ajuster le paramétrage de la représentation cartographique,
- mettre en relation ces données avec celles présentes dans l'application,
- mémoriser une série de cartes basées sur différents cadrages,
- enregistrer cette série sous forme d'une étude Géoclip O3.

Cette fonctionnalité qui permet d'enregistrer une étude est une nouveauté O3. Elle est une extension de la sauvegarde d'un projet, fonction qui faisait déjà de la version précédente de Géoclip un véritable outil collaboratif, favorisant les échanges entre utilisateurs.

Similar to last year, I’ve volunteered the Azavea office space for a Code for America hackathon at the end of February. This will coincide with a coordinated national event, a series of CityCamp hackathons that will also be known as Code Across America, on Saturday, Feb 25. Coffee and bagels will be served at 9am, festivities will begin around 9:30am and we will be working hard on civic apps all day. This will be part of a national week of civic innovation. We’ll build apps, liberate data, and develop the skills we need to create an ecosystem for civic engagement.
